I went to the satellite voting center in Haysville, at the public library/community center. Zero waiting time and I had no problems. (The touchscreen was a bit wonky but I ultimately got it to do what I wanted.)

Just saw a fleet of four Chinook helicopters heading west flying low over our house near 21st & Ridge. No transponders and can't see them on FlightRadar24 but you can definitely hear them coming. Anyone else catch them? Pretty cool sound.

Every time we have been it’s a ghost town. The only time we’ve seen a lot of customers is when there was a concert .. I don’t see how it can stay a float if it’s empty 90% of the time . I think they screwed up by not allowing smoking/vaping.. guess we shall see

Story ‘A Continuous Joy’: Charles McAfee's lifetime of architecture and activism in Kansas

Post image
47 Upvotes

At age 94, the pioneering Black architect still hasn’t given up on Wichita.

In the summer of 1958, a young Black man from Wichita, Kansas, named Charles McAfee walked into the Los Angeles office of celebrated African American architect Paul Revere Williams. Williams, who was the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects, had become the go-to architect for Hollywood’s elite while also designing public housing projects for the city. In many ways, he represented what a young McAfee aspired to be.

But when Williams offered McAfee a job, the young architect turned it down. He wasn’t ready to trade Kansas for California, even if life in Los Angeles might be considerably easier than in Wichita, where attitudes toward people of color were still shaped by Jim Crow laws and the city’s proximity to the South.

Partly, it was stubbornness; a family friend had told McAfee that no architecture firm in Wichita would hire a Black man. But it was also a keen sense of history. Four generations of McAfees had called Wichita home, and it was this lineage that persuaded the young architect that he shouldn’t abandon his hometown. He recalls thinking of his grandfather and great-grandfather, “When you think about what the hell they went through, I ain’t having no problem like they did.”

Read the whole story by architecture writer Timothy A. Schuler and K-State architecture students Blandine Siffray: https://www.shoutwichita.com/a-continuous-joy-charles-mcafees-lifetime-of-architecture-and-activism-in-kansas/

In Search Of Carpenter/Cabinet finishers recs

Hey fam,

I have an old heirloom from my grandfather - essentially what used to be a medicine cabinet in his clinic and is probably nearing 100 years old. Wood with plate glass on 3 sides and glass shelves. It’s no longer square and the door sags and I don’t trust it to hold much anymore.

Really just looking to stabilize it and get it looking decent again, maybe get a new coat of paint put on. Anyone have recommendations for projects like this in town?

In Search Of Wool yarn

I've been out of the knitting scene for a while and I need some feltable (non super wash) wool yarn. Are there any local yarn stores that have wool yarn?

I don't think Michael's carries any and the last yarn store I remember was Twist. Which I'm pretty sure has closed.

In Search Of Where to watch the packers games

Hello,

I recently moved to Wichita, KS from Wisconsin. I have quite a few coworkers that "know a spot" where fans of their teams get together to watch the games. Is there a spot where quite a few Packers fans get together to watch the green and gold play?

In Search Of ISO: Permission to Squirrel Hunt Your Land?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Pic for attention

Howdy folks, I'm looking for someone with property that would allow me to come squirrel hunt your land. Me:

-36, husband and father

-Life long resident of Kansas

-fully licensed, experienced squirrel hunter, Afghanistan veteran,

-Respectful of property, rules, and will even pick up trash while I'm out

Would love to have permission to hunt a property or two. Kansas has the least amount of public hunting land in the entire country. Would just be me with my .22, all shots taken safely. Exploring getting a .410 if you'd rather I run shot shells only. May bring my wife or my 9yo daughter on occasion as walk alongs, the do not hunt. Possibly my dog that would be short leashed around my waist for companionship.

Happy to discuss game sharing, trade of services, or a lease agreement for permission. Would like to put some extra meat in the freezer and squirrels make it pretty easy. Thank you for your consideration!

In Search Of Local bank recommendations?

I bank with Meritrust's and was happy but recently I found out that they have an overdraft fee right away if you go negative won't even give you till end of day to let you make the balance positive. And I used to have a savings but after my kids surgery it went away and there's transactions that go through then disappear and come back and it caused me to go negative so now I'm shit out of luck for the last money I had in my account and they won't reverse it even though they admitted their employee advised me wrong about the over draft fees.

Looking for a good bank that allows you to make the account positive by either end of business day or next day. And helps you work on your credit by giving you chances. Like I said I really liked Meritrust's but I can't afford a 30$ fee every time something gets taken out that I didn't expect with the whole disappearing thing their system does.

No negative comments, this economy is horrible and I'm sure I'm one amount several struggling people just looking for good local banks.

Politics How does early voting work?

Hi, I'm 18 and I want to vote early at one of my local early voting places. Is it any different than the Nov 3rd voting? Or is it just the exact same thing but days earlier? Just wondering how the process works, too. Thanks!

Edit: Thanks everyone for the helpful replies! I filled out my ballot online and got it emailed to me so I know what I'll be doing when I go vote.

In Search Of ISO a wedding band

Getting married next year and wanting to get a local band for our wedding. We’re into indie/alternative, angsty stuff, or country.

Examples of artists we really like: Charley Crockett, Colter Wall, Girl in Red, Turnpike Troubadours, Mitski, Paul Cauthen, Sorry Mom, The Lostines, Amyl and The Sniffers, Wednesday, Ian Noe, The Front Bottoms, Lana Del Rey, myclownshoes.

I know that’s a WIDE variety but we like a lot of different stuff and we’re open to a lot of options! So please feel free to drop your name or Spotify or that of someone you know of.
