A note to the volunteer operators who found us this month — an invitation, and a challenge

Posted and stickied by the r/Volunteer mod team.

Over the past few weeks, as GVI collapsed and left students stranded mid-placement, something predictable happened in our megathread. Within about 48 hours, roughly a dozen volunteer operators arrived. Some of you we'd never seen before. Several of the accounts were days old — in a couple of cases, hours old.

We want to talk to all of you directly, because there's a question worth putting on the table.

You showed up, and we saw you. Naming the operators who posted or were removed in that thread: Maximo Nivel, Global Leadership Adventures (Terra Education), Projects Abroad, Natucate, Volunteering Solutions, International Volunteer HQ, NatureMind Research & Development, Wildlife ACT, and Marine Conservation Philippines.

Credit where it's due first, because it matters. A few of you led with help rather than a pitch. Marine Conservation Philippines wrote an actual guide to chargebacks and refund routes and shared it freely. Volunteering Solutions was upfront about who they were and walked people through Section 75 and chargeback timelines before getting anywhere near a sell. Maximo Nivel offered stranded students in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru a safe home base at zero cost, and by one participant's account took on some of GVI's abandoned field staff. That is what an organisation looks like when it sees a community rather than a customer list.

But here's the harder part, and we'd be failing this sub if we didn't say it.

For a lot of the offers, the shape was the same: an account created that week, one post, a fees-and-inclusions block lifted straight off a landing page, and then silence. No prior participation here. No answers to the hard questions this community actually wrestles with. Just an arrival, timed precisely to the moment when several hundred young people had money tied up and nowhere to go.

You describe yourselves — and many of you genuinely are — as reputable, established, better run than GVI. B Corps. WWF endorsements. Decades of operation. Six-figure participant counts. We take that seriously. But reputation in this field is not a press page. It's whether you contribute to the body of knowledge and practice around ethical volunteering, or whether you only materialise when a competitor dies and there's a stranded cohort to absorb.

So this is the invitation, and it comes with a challenge attached.

We want you here — not as recruiters, as contributors. This sub is trying to be the place people come before they hand over £3,000, so they can tell a real programme from the next GVI. You are exactly the people with the expertise to make that possible. So put it to work:

Write for us. Real articles, on the things you actually know. How to check an operator's financial protection so participants aren't left as unsecured creditors when it folds. What Section 75, ATOL, ABTA and the Package Travel Regulations really cover — and where "land only" bookings quietly lose that cover. What safeguarding on the ground should actually look like. How to spot orphanage tourism and other harm dressed up as good. The gap between what a participant pays and what reaches the local project — a figure one of your own sector partners raised in that very thread.

Answer questions when there's nothing in it for you. The single strongest signal any of you can send that you're not GVI is to show up on an ordinary Tuesday, for a nervous 19-year-old comparing two programmes, when neither of them is yours.

Here's the bar, so it's clear and it's fair to everyone:

  • Disclose who you are, every time. Affiliation stated up front, never buried.
  • Contribute knowledge, not recruitment. Genuine, sourced, useful. A pitch with a citation on it is still a pitch.
  • Stick around. Accounts that appear only when an operator collapses, post once, and vanish will be read for exactly what they are — and we'll say so.
  • Follow the rules already on the door: good faith, real detail, no pressure tactics, no farming a tragedy for traffic.

Operators who do this earn something no ad budget can buy: standing in the one room where prospective volunteers are actually deciding who to trust. For the orgs that show up and mean it, we'll gladly set up contributor flair and a resources wiki you can help build.

And to be straight with all of you: we're writing this partly because, right now, we can't tell most of you apart. A one-day-old account with a landing-page pitch looks identical whether it belongs to a genuinely excellent organisation or to the next collapse waiting to happen. The way you prove which one you are isn't the offer you posted three weeks ago. It's what you contribute now — when there's no stranded cohort to win.

The door's open. Come help build the thing that would have warned people about GVI.

Discussion / ethics / advice Is it dumb to pay for a volunteer program when workaway is free?

I will be spending two months in Central America on a pretty tight budget and want to volunteer in Guatemala for part of the trip. Workaway is basically free compared with paid programs, but most of the projects I am genuinely interested in seem to charge a fee.

For anyone who’s tried both options, was paying for a volunteer program actually worth it, or did you get a similar experience through a free platform?

Volunteer – local How to start volunteering?

Always really wanted to help out organisations and do some volunteer work but I have no idea where to start. Honestly happy to do anything, remote or in person. With of course no expectation of pay. I've got some skills in media and I'm a person who loves to connect with others. What advice do people have?

Discussion / ethics / advice What made you come back after your first time volunteering?

I’ve been asking people what helped them get involved in something they cared about. A couple of replies stuck with me: someone personally inviting them, or making it clear where they could start.

It made me wonder about what happens after that first day.
For those who volunteer regularly, what made you come back? Did someone remember your name? Did you feel useful? Was there a person who helped you find your place?

I work in accounting and finance, and I’m thinking about where I could contribute consistently. I’d also like to understand how we make it easier for someone who wants to help but feels awkward showing up alone, has limited time, or doesn’t know what they can offer.

What did a person or organization do that made you feel welcome…and what could they have done better?

Disclosure: I used ChatGPT to help organize my thoughts for this post. Using AI for good.

Volunteer – local Maybe sticking with a BSW wouldn’t be bad for me! I jvolunteered with a local shower program a few hours ago and loved it!

I \*really\* enjoyed my time here today. I regret not trying to look into programs like this sooner. Everyone was great. I have been a little on the fence about whether or not I want to keep social work as my major when I head to cal state east bay in January (we actually choose our classes tomorrow) but volunteering with the shower program today made me feel a lot more confident about it. I walked out with a smile knowing that I would like to continue doing this work in some capacity.

I will be happy to volunteer for more programs that support unhoused individuals as time progresses!

Recruiting – local Call A Grandkid volunteering app !!

Hi neighbors! 👋 I'm Jon, and I live here in Oxford. I'm starting something I think a lot of families around here could use. Inspired by my wonderful neighbors I help with their tech support and other social needs.
<3

It's called Call A Grandkid: free, patient tech help for older adults, one tap away.

👵 FOR OLDER NEIGHBORS (or your parents and grandparents):
Go to callagrandkid.com and tap the big green "Call" button. A friendly, screened volunteer answers by voice or video and helps with phones, tablets, computers, video calls with family, or a message that looks like a scam. There's no account, no sign-up and no cost, ever.

🔒 Built to be safe: helpers never ask for money, passwords or codes, callers stay anonymous, and every call is recorded.

🙋 FOR HELPERS (18+):
Good with technology? Help a neighbor from home, on your own schedule. We screen and train every helper. It's a great fit for college students, young professionals, and anyone who's "the tech person" in their family.
Sign up: callagrandkid.com/helpers

We're just getting started in Chester County, so please share this with anyone who could use a hand, or lend one. Questions? Comment below or email [support@callagrandkid.com](mailto:support@callagrandkid.com). 💚

The people who lead/host it have been very welcoming and inviting so far. I would love to volunteer more with our homeless populations and ensure that I am really providing a helping hand for our community members ❤️

Discussion / ethics / advice Volunteering during natural disasters?

Hello, I recently got my EMT license. I apologize if this is the wrong place. My area (the four corners) was recently hit by flooding. My towns fine, but in NM a few towns such as Aztec and Bloomfield were hit exceptionally hard. The Coast Guard was out there. I would love to help, but all of the fire departments offices are closed till Monday. And there’s no other numbers listed for specific stations. I can’t find anything that necessarily says they need volunteers? But it is a rural area and recourses from what I heard was spread thin, and rain is still continuous. Would urgent cares potentially be the better option?

Red cross, nor FEMA or any other sites for volunteer s seem to have anything listed. This is also very new for me, so I guess I don’t know where I should be looking either way?

Discussion / ethics / advice Does anyone have any experience volunteering at a library?

Hello everyone,

I have an interview/orientation for a volunteer position at my local library coming up, and I’m wondering if anyone has any advice or experience in the library system. I’ve been so scared to volunteer and put myself out there for the longest time and really don’t want to back down from this opportunity, considering this is what I’d like to do long-term. I literally don’t know what to expect, I just hope I can maybe meet some like-minded people and maybe gain some experience for a future role.

Volunteer – abroad Anyone ever tried AIESEC's global volunteer program?

Hi! My college has an AIESEC's chapter, and a friend of mine is like the club president and she suggested that I could join, but tbh idk wut I think of it, I like the vision behind AIESEC and i must admit i made some great friends here, but idk if i should try the global volunteer thingy, and from my experience so far AIESEC is a bit time consuming, it seems like all we do is marketing and ngl it looks like a pyramid scheme, idk if i should keep on going for resume building or just quit and join another club instead

Discussion / ethics / advice Volunteer managers and/or coordinators

Hello, there! For those managing volunteer services, I want to start a discussion about the most rewarding aspect of your job.

While I was growing up, I wanted to become a doctor and regarded this profession as the most esteemed. I couldn't become a doctor, and now find myself in volunteer services. I know there is something personal I need to heal to stop tying my self-worth to my profession. I'm considering venturing into this field long-term. But I want to look at all my options thoroughly.

For those managing volunteer services, I want to start a discussion about the most rewarding aspect of your job. What do you find the most rewarding? Do you have healthy boundaries with your job? Do you feel like you're making a difference? How do you balance your personal life and work? Is there anything that you wish you could change about your role?

If you have been in the profession for more than 10 years, what has kept you there?

Discussion / ethics / advice The government should force you to volunteer

Many people nowadays lament "Wah! I am isolated! I am lonely. I do not have anyone to talk to!" when there are plenty of opportunities to socialize all around them via volunteer opportunities.

One of the best places to socialize and volunteer at the same time is at soup kitchens. You get to talk to people and do great deed simultaneously. It also makes you feel not lonely.

The government should make you do this. This way no one will ever say they're lonely ever again.

Discussion / ethics / advice Volunteering is Part of the Solution

Originally posted in poverty finance, but thought it would be good here too. I love seeing posts about great experiences at food banks / churches / non-profs, etc. Many people who use these services rarely give back, but:

There are great benefits to PARTICIPATING and CONTRIBUTING to these orgs.

  1. Early access. Volunteers often get early access to donated goods. Like a co-op, many orgs prioritize their own in-need members who donate hours or expertise to the overall mission. This isn’t “cheating,” it’s usually designed into organizations as a way of building resilience, responsibility, and a sense of purpose.
  2. Employment. For those working out of a period of non-employment (especially the kind you don’t want on a resume - drugs, jail, etc.), volunteer work for a few months can bridge gaps on a resume. You can also get good, recent references from supervisors.
  3. Network. You will most likely be volunteering alongside of retirees, board members, professionals, local leaders, affluent donors, etc. etc. Having people in your corner who ARE NOT in your financial situation is worth more than any other resource.

If well-connected people get to know you and see you are genuinely trying to change your life you will be shocked by how many people will rally around you. No, they probably won’t pay your bills or give you handouts, but they WILL use their influence and connections to smooth your path.

  1. Self-focus. Finally, and this one is tough, volunteering can get you out of your own head. Your problems aren’t the worst in the world. Your needs aren’t the only ones that matter. You aren’t a hopeless disaster. Your life isn’t over. You aren’t doomed to make the same mistakes everyone you know has made. Getting out and helping others could do wonders for your perspective and self-esteem.

Volunteer – abroad Environmental Biologist Looking to Volunteer

Hello everyone!

I am looking for a volunteer program in Costa Rica to do for approximately a month in March 2027 after I do a yoga teacher training. I have a biology degree and currently work as an environmental consultant with several years of field experience conducting wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, and general data collection.

There are so many options online, it seems difficult to filter through and select ones that will be the most helpful, and also the most able to make the best use of my skills. I was wondering if anyone could share specific programs that are meant for more than just casual eco-tourism/volunteerism. Something that could go on a resume would be an amazing plus, but not required. I unfortunately speak very little Spanish, so there would have to be some level of English communication possible.

I am hoping to keep the cost low, but definitely willing to pay for the right program.

Thanks in advance!

Volunteer – local Looking for Volunteering Opportunities in Germany Starting in 2027 – Applicant from Algeria

Hello everyone!

I'm from Algeria and I'm looking for a volunteering opportunity in Germany starting in 2027, preferably through programs such as the Federal Volunteer Service (BFD), Voluntary Social Year (FSJ), or Voluntary Ecological Year (FÖJ).

I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, specializing in Information Systems, and I have the following skills and experience:

- IT skills: Java, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, PostgreSQL, and Supabase.

- Project experience: Web development, Android applications, and workflow automation using n8n.

- Volunteering experience: Volunteering with the Algerian Red Crescent.

- Work experience: Restaurant work, including customer service and teamwork.

- German: I have passed the Goethe B1 Writing and Speaking modules. I plan to retake Reading and Listening in December 2026.

- Driving licence: Category B.

I'm particularly interested in opportunities related to IT, technology, social work, or environmental protection, but I'm also open to other suitable volunteering positions.

Since I currently live in Algeria, I'm looking for an organization that accepts applicants from Algeria and can support me with the documents needed for the visa application. Accommodation is especially important to me.

Does anyone know of specific organizations or current vacancies where I can apply directly from Algeria?

I would really appreciate any recommendations, links to opportunities, or personal experiences.

Thank you for your help!

Looking for abroad or within the U.S, ethical volunteer opportunities with an education degree (k-6 gen & sped). I already volunteer locally and would like an opportunity to make a bigger impact. I was looking into “ love volunteering” and I don’t know if I’m doing the right research or not, are they ethical or should I look elsewhere?

Discussion / ethics / advice ideas for community service events i can host on campus?

Hey guys! I’m a sophomore in college and volunteering is something I’m incredibly passionate about. I was recently elected as president of my college’s Red Cross Chapter and I have never had a leadership position this influential before, so I am asking if there any ideas anyone has for community service events I can host on campus, because I’m quite stuck on what to plan. I do have funding from my undergraduate student government, so money isn’t a drastic issue. I would like events to be a valuable volunteer experience for both my members and the rest of my executive board. Thank you :)

Storytime Spent the day helping out with Mail Pony! 🐴📬

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share a little update about my day. I spent some time helping out volunteer for Mail Pony, and it felt good to be involved and lend a hand where I could.

For now, I’ve finished dropping off flyers until further notice, so I’m taking a break from that part of things while I wait for any updates about what comes next.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to help out, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. Volunteering is a nice way to stay involved, contribute my time, and be part of something.

Has anyone else here volunteered for a local organization or helped out with a community project? I’d love to hear about your experiences!
