I want to go to UMD really bad but my stats are pretty low. I have excuses that I’ve put in my additional information such as caring for a special needs family member after school for 3 years and also having work responsibilities.
My GPA is a 3.5/5.0 weighted, my school doesn’t do unweighted or does a class rank. I do rigorous IB coursework and maintain a B average in them but I have few C’s in my report card.
Nevertheless, my essay is extremely good and insightful and my extracurriculars are well-rounded and honestly quite impressive
My big fear is that a lot of the students in my class might apply and they definitely have higher GPA’s than that.
I’m in state and im black (idk if this helps evaluate more).
I know some people might say just give it up but I need genuine evaluation and answers

Son just admitted to UMD as transfer student for spring 2027 semester. Sophomore from Rockville MD starting as Econ major though hoping to switch to business. Trying to figure out how to locate people to room with probably off campus in one of the nearby apartment buildings within walking distance. Please let us know any suggestions on where to look or anyone you know who may also be looking for roommate for spring. Also going to post on off campus housing board. Thanks!

Hey everyone! I'm conducting a survey about surveillance at the University of Maryland and would really appreciate your input.
I'm interested in hearing students' perspectives on surveillance on campus, including their awareness, experiences, and opinions on privacy.
If you're a UMD student, I'd really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to fill out my survey! If the link doesn't open, try opening it while being signed into your terpmail account.
Thanks for your time! Every response helps.

Im trying to be Nathan Fielder for Halloween, but I can't find any laptop harnesses that would ship in time. Does anyone on campus own one of these and would be willing to let me borrow it for a night. Thanks
Cornerstone Grill & Loft may not serve alcohol for 90 days beginning Friday — the day before Halloween — after the Prince George’s County Board of License Commissioners suspended its liquor license last week.
The establishment will also be required to pay a $7,500 fine along with the suspension, according to a Monday email from Terence Sheppard, the board’s director. The board suspended the license after finding the establishment had presented a “Threat to the Peace and Safety,” based on video evidence and testimony from four University of Maryland police officers.
Cornerstone’s attorney has asked the board to temporarily pause the decision for 90 days, allowing the establishment time to appeal the charges and file a petition for judicial review, according to Sheppard. The board will hold a meeting on Tuesday, where it will consider the restaurant and bar’s request. But Sheppard noted this request only delays punishment and is separate from the board’s underlying decision.
Cornerstone owner Mark Srour declined to comment on Monday amid the ongoing board proceedings.
The board may suspend a liquor license for “the commission of any act by the licensee, his/her agents or employees that constitutes a danger to the peace and safety of the neighborhood,” according to county regulations. The board first addressed the charges during meetings on Sept. 9 and again on Oct. 14, according to county documents.

I did not see this mentioned here yet.
It is an upsetting story to me.

Do any current students or faculty or staff know anything about this which they are able to share?

I am coming to UMD to visit my friend from Wednesday evening (arrival ~6) to Sunday (departure ~1-2). They live in Terrapin Row. I know parking here can be especially tricky/expensive, but I am looking for any alternatives to paying $20/day for the nights of Wednesday-Friday. Preferably, I would want to keep my car parked for most, if not the whole duration of my stay. Last time I came to visit, I parked on the street next to Terrapin Row and then in Mowatt for the last night, since it was free at the U2 level.
Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Just as the title says. This petition comes from UMD Climate Action Campaign, a student organization with national non-profit backing. We are planning on meeting with federal and state legislators and electeds at the end of the semester. Previous efforts have told us that if we don't have at least 250 petition signatures (.5% of our undergrad population), that we will not be taken seriously. We're bumping that to 300 in case of any bad signatures. Please sign if you would like to help us push for federal action against the climate crisis!

My roommate had mentioned he may not come back to umd after winter break. What is the process for a new roommate? Is it randomly assigned?

I lost my keys yesterday somewhere in or around Iribe. It has a metal key, a red carabiner, and red UMD Computer Science metal tag. Please let me know if anyone finds it.

Hi,
I am the boyfriend of a current undergrad PHP student and current med school applicant. I just came on here to apologize and state it is stupid as hell that you guys have to secure a FORTY (40) hour a week internship just to GRADUATE, knowing how difficult the job market/internship market is for undergrads right now.
Then if they secure an internship, and it’s only 20hours a week (like MOST public health internships are) they have to secure ANOTHER for 40 hours a week.
This is the supuesto degree requirement ever and I hate seeing all you guys struggle with it.

I am currently a sophomore commuting to the university this semester. I am interested in either moving onto campus or into an off-campus apartment next semester. Which one seems to be the better option? (Idk how the Spring Only on-campus housing waitlist works but I registered for it)

Hey everyone! I graduated from UMD CMNS in 2018. I originally planned to go straight into a doctoral program. Unfortunately, life ended up kicking my ass a bit in my senior year with multiple family deaths in the span of a few months. I hit a brick wall emotionally and mentally in my last two semesters. I pulled myself together just enough to finish my degree on time. However, I lost all love for the field and had no desire to do research in it. Ironically, DOGE cuts have seriously gutted that field in the last year or so. So who knows what kind of position I'd be in if I followed my original plan?
Since then, I've spent the last 7-8 years in a dead-end job completely unrelated to my degree. I'm desperate for a change and want to go back to school. Right now, I'm narrowing it down to two fields, one of which is civil engineering.
I strongly considered civil engineering in high school while preparing for college apps. I ended up choosing my CMNS major instead, which I low-key regret now that I'm 30.
My degree required three semesters of physics, three semesters of calculus, and one semester of differential equations, which overlapped with a lot of the engineering requirements. The problem is that I've been so far removed from this kind of work that it feels like starting from scratch.
Any suggestions on what to expect when reapplying to UMD? I'm almost 100% certain I'll need to start with another bachelor's degree in CE to shore up the fundamentals and pivot to engineering rather than going straight into a master's program. My concern is whether any of my original degree credits (such as Gen-Eds and STEM credits) will transfer to a new bachelor's degree.
EDIT: I spoke with the Student Success Office. They found me in the system and told me I can return to the school for another bachelor's degree with a 15-minute application process. All of my old credits still count towards my new degree of choice. They also talked me through getting into my chosen engineering program. I've reached out to an advisor in my desired department to discuss the pros and cons of going straight for a master's or returning as an undergrad.

Apparently, my CMSC 420 Professor is also a Film maker and has 3 films on her IMBD page. I dont know why but this is incredibly funny to me. Not to say anything bad though. Her films are pretty well regarded apparently. Its just the concept of a CS professor who is on the theoretical side of comp sci making films is kinda mind-blowing considering the time and dedication required for films.

I don't know if this is helpful, but if you get to the lot by 9 am at the latest, there are still some parking spots left.
