Discussion OMAD Counseling suggestion
Less a discussion and more just requesting some opinions/advice!
Let me (F24) preface this by saying: Over the past couple of years I kinda went through something traumatic and dont want to talk about it too much, but ultimately Im back from the dumps and trying to get back into the swing of things at UW! Its been rough and I know Im going to need help since a lot has changed in my life, which is why Im even talking to the OMAD counselors, but Im kinda unsure about what to do next regarding how I present at UW.
Ive been getting decent advice and help as a returning student, so I trust them enough to talk about the technical details but I wanted to ask: should I inform my OMAD counselor about my transition (mtf)? I hear a lot of transphobia on different socials coming from UW faculty and staff, and wouldnt want it to get in the way of me returning to classes, but also kinda assume that if there was anyone outside of typical trans-groups to be ACTUALLY supportive of a transition (and even give solid advice) then it would be the people who are literally just offering free advice.
I may just go ahead and inform them anyway, since maybe itll open me up to different scholorship opportunities (which I definately need right now) AND I have a meeting with them soon, but I wanted to get some differing/varying opinons on the matter before I do. And if everyone's pretty much in agreement as to what I should do, then Im also always happy to hear how I should approach (or any alternatives)!

Admissions Uw seattle winter quarter 27
Hi everyone! I’m wondering if anyone who applied to the University of Washington Seattle for Winter Quarter 2027 has received an admission decision yet.
If you applied last year when did you get your decision, since I haven’t seen many updates about Winter Quarter admissions. I know decision timelines can vary, but I’m curious whether decisions have started coming out yet or if most applicants are still waiting.

Discussion CFRM 440 thoughts?
Hi! I'm considering taking CFRM 440/540 (along with 410) winter quarter. How have people's experiences been with the workload of the class? John F Stewart and Winston Pun are teaching it if that adds any helpful context!

Rant Yall Seattle freeze has to be real
As a second year, I’ve started to see no one wants to make new friends and let alone relationships too. Idk why people here are really closed minded bc you could just say even hi we don’t gotta be friends but ignoring them is like a whole new level. idk if it’s this generation with social media and whatnot but I’ve started to accept that id probably be alone for a long while unfortunately.
Id love to hear anyone’s thoughts on this!! FYI: I am in clubs and have been trying to make friends when I was a freshman.

Admissions Winter Transfer! driving me nutssss
Please tell me there are others out there waiting for Winter 2027 transfer decisions lol...
I applied as a Comm major and I know decisions are expected sometime in November, but holy cow, this waiting game is frustrating lol. Especially as im coming from out of state and im trying to figure out housing and moving arrangements before January.
I've already been accepted to other universities and I'm honestly getting to the point where I'm considering moving forward with those options bc the anxiety is eating me up.
Has anyone heard anything yet or have any intel on when decisions might start rolling out? I just need to know im not alone at this point lol

Discussion consortium agreement
Has anyone done a consortium agreement with financial aid? How was that process? I'm looking into it and one of their requirements is that the class isn't offered at UW and/or degree deployment + prerequisite needed.
Discussion made a chrome extension that tells you if your dining money will last the quarter
I wanted to track how much money I was spending at the dining halls, but I was too lazy to track it myself, so I made Dining Pace, a chrome extension that allows you to easily track your spending.
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/dining-pace/iehighhhdjkhajddbngcifbkcnnlnlkj
it’s free, no login, and everything stays in your browser. just open up the view transaction history button under residential dining account. then click on the chrome extension and it will automatically organize all of your data into clean graphs. not affiliated with UW, just something i built. i hope you guys like it!

Campus Life Where can I study super late any time that has outlets and looks nice
Odegaard is okay but it closes early on weekends, Suzallo is my favorite by far of looks but it closes at 8 which is early for me (and 5 on Friday wtf) and it's really hard to get a seat by an outlet to charge my laptop. My laptop runs out of battery fast so I can usually only stay in there for like 1.5 hr if I can't get an outlet. When I mean late I mean like actually midnight. The obvious choice is the study lounges in my dorm hall but they're lowk kinda boring. Is there anywhere here that has a nice aesthetic like Suzallo but also has outlets and will let me study in the actual middle of the night? Ik mgh is supposed to be 24/7 or something from what I last heard but it kinda sucks in there and it's doesn't have the aesthetic I'm going for.
Basically I'd like somewhere with an aesthetic like Suzallo that will let me study there at midnight and plug in my laptop. If it's not already obvious I just got here a month ago and I'm still learning about what's here.
Also wtf why is barely anything open on Saturday??? That's when I have time to go study at somewhere other than my dorm which feels boring and monotonous???
Edit: I am an engineering undeclared student if that narrows anything down at all
Edit 2: I'm also looking for areas where I can have a coffee with me without getting in trouble too, most places I've been to are fine with it but yk

Discussion Christian Gorski or Shangjie Zhang for Math 207?
I'm planning to take Math 207 in winter quarter but there seems to be only two professors teaching the course, and I was wondering how everyone's experience was with these professors. Christian Gorski has a pretty low ratemyprofessor rating but I'm not sure whether if he's actually bad or if it's just because the course is hard. On the other hand, Shangjie Zhang seems to be new and I believe he's teaching one of the Fall '26 207s.

Discussion BIOC 405 how do you recover after falling behind
Currently in bioc 405 and am feeling pretty overwhelmed. I joined the class during the second week of the quarter, so I feel like I’ve been playing catch up ever since. I just feel like there's so much to keep up with every week (taking notes on prelecture videos, attending lecture, reviewing lecture material, doing practice problems, making flashcards, etc). And some topics feel really difficult to grasp, like symmetry and handedness. Sometimes when I'm watching the lectures and listening to the professor talk, I feel like I have no idea what he's saying. It's like he's speaking another language. I know I probably won’t do great on Exam 1, but I’m worried about how to prepare for Exam 2 if I don’t have a strong foundation from the first half of the class. It feels like I’ll have to learn new material while also relearning everything from Exam 1 for the final.
For those who have taken bioc 405, what did your weekly routine look like to stay on top of all the material. How would you recommend that I catch up after falling behind? Are there any external resources that help with understanding difficult concepts?

Discussion FIN 490 Midterm
Has anyone taken FIN 490 with Ahmed Guecioueur? We have his midterm coming up and I wanted to know if it is anything like his practice exams. Does he like to surprise students? Or is he like nice? Is he a tough grader? We haven’t done too much work for him so it is hard to tell.

Discussion INFO - Information Architecture (Course Question)
I’m just wondering between these two INFO classes, if anyone has taken them before,
“INFO 331: Introduction to Information Architecture” And “433: Content Strategy in Information Architecture”. In UW MyPlan, both of these courses don’t have a pre-requisite sequence that’s required. And I’m just wondering whether I would need to take these courses at a certain order in terms of ensuring level of understanding? Or if it’s okay to skip 331 and go straight to 433 without any prior knowledge of Information Architecture? I have taken design classes before, but I don’t think I learned Information Architecture specifically. Are any of these harder than the other?
If anyone has any insights or taken these before, I’d appreciate it very much!

Clubs & RSOs Anyone interested in creating a GPU Programming RSO?
I'm super into GPU programming and will have some future experience on the CUDA User Drivers Team. I think its a pretty underrated and awesome niche part of CS that I don't really see any major CS clubs--or people in general--cover. I would love to start one but I saw that I would need 5-10 initial Group Administrators to be able to send an application in. Please let me know if you are interested!
