Gen Z’s Decreasing Interest in Sexual and Romantic Content and it’s Impact on the Ability to Appreciate Art
Lately I have been seeing more and more posts, tweets, quotes and articles about Gen Z’s decreased interest in sex scenes in movies and TV. This npr article mentions a study that shows that “Generation Z is far more interested in seeing stories of platonic relationships on screen than those featuring sex and romance”. I can understand being against gratuitous sex and romance that is completely unnecessary to the plot. I cannot understand being against nudity and sex as basically “completely unnecessary”. Sex, nudity and romance can be incredible important to the story. It helps show vulnerability, weakness, desire, insecurity, excitement and love. Sex and romance are also such a large part of the human experience to so many people. They are deeply important and connecting to so many people as well.
All of this makes me wonder, can you be anti-sex and anti-romance and still consider yourself a cinephile? Or do you think this would exclude you from too much important cinema that you could only be considered a casual movie lover? I personally think that if you are unable to connect with movies that feature sex and romance, you cannot take in enough of the full cinematic experience to be considered a cinephile
Edit: I was watching Thelma and Louise which features a sex scene between Thelma and JD (a young Brad Pitt). I think the movie is better because it features that sex scene. If it were removed from the movie, it would have been a worse movie because of it. The sex helps sell you on how charming Pitt’s character is to be able to trick Thelma like that. It also shows you how Thelma’s sexual experience was very intense and pleasurable for her, contrasting how sexually unfulfilled she was in her crumbling marriage. It also shows her being excited and giggly after having a great sexual experience, a feeling that (hopefully) many people can connect to. The sex scene served multiple purposes to the movie and if it hadn’t featured that sex scene, the movie wouldn’t have told the full story as well as it did
Edit 2: I think one of the only things that might be an apt comparison, is saying you won’t watch any films with violence or crime in them. If someone said they can’t enjoy any movies with violence or crime, they would be missing out on such a huge portion of influential and popular movies
