News 🚨 While Everyone Argues About the Playoff, Texas Tech Just Won 2025 Awards Season

The 2025 awards keep rolling in, and one program is absolutely cleaning up like never before: Texas Tech.

While everyone is focused on the Playoff, Heisman finalists, and blue-blood storylines, the Red Raider players, coaches, and the team itself just stacked more hardware than any program in the country this year. Yes — more than Ohio State, more than Indiana, more than anyone.

The Haul Is Actually Insane

National Awards (8 total — most in the country)

  • Jacob Rodriguez (LB):
    • šŸ† Lombardi Award (best lineman/LB)
    • šŸ† Butkus Award (best LB)
    • šŸ† Bronko Nagurski Trophy (best defensive player)
    • šŸ† DCTF Defensive Player of the Year
    • Pony Express Award (best teammate duo, shared)
  • David Bailey (DE/OLB):
    • šŸ† Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year
    • šŸ† Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year
    • Pony Express Award (shared)
    • Finalist – Lombardi Award & Bednarik Award

Conference & State Dominance

  • Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year (Rodriguez)
  • 6 First-Team All-Big 12 selections — most in the conference
  • 8 selections to the All-Texas Team — most of any school in Texas (yes, more than Texas, A&M, TCU, etc.)

Coaching Awards

  • Joey McGuire – AFCA Region 4 Coach of the Year, DCTF Co-Coach of the Year, Eddie Robinson Award finalist
  • Kenny Perry – FootballScoop Special Teams Coach of the Year
  • Shiel Wood – Broyles Award finalist (top assistant in the nation)

Team Achievements

  • Big 12 Champions
  • 11–1 regular season
  • No. 4 seed in the CFP (Orange Bowl bound)

By the Numbers

~28 total major awards, finalist nods, and All-Conference/All-State selections
That’s more than Ohio State, Indiana, Notre Dame, Penn State… literally everyone.

Jacob Rodriguez didn’t just win the Butkus — he swept the three biggest defensive awards in the sport in the same season. That’s an all-time rarity.

So Why Isn’t This a Bigger National Story?

Maybe because it’s Texas Tech. Maybe because they weren’t in the SEC. Maybe because the national media still sees them as ā€œcute little Texas Tech.ā€

But make no mistake: Joey McGuire’s 2025 Red Raiders just had one of the most decorated seasons any program has ever had, and they’re heading to the Orange Bowl with a legit shot to make the semifinal.

Wreck ’Em. This one’s special.

Poll: Updated Season Final Record Prediction. What Do Y’all Think?

If we beat Arizona and West Virginia then our game against Oklahoma State is essentially an elimination game for either team to make conference championship game. Oklahoma State has been somewhat forgotten about by the league and just re-entered the Top 25 but they only have 1 conference loss as well. Their other remaining games are all against teams ranked in the bottom half of the conference standings

11-1 (Win Out)
10-2 (Lose to Oklahoma St)
9-3 (Lose to OKST and Arizona)
9-3 (Lose to OKST and W. Virginia)
9-3 (Lose another combination of 2 games
8-4 (Means we lose 3 more games)

Thoughts? None of Us Should Be Surprised Though. I’m Definitely Not

I saw this coming on a road game that was this month or next month.

Just frustrated as the coaching staff and TTU Athletics media sold us on this team. All the transfers have underwhelmed besides WR Kenny Johnson and LB Austin Romaine

Whatever though. I’d rather us lose these games than be the laughing stock of the nation in the playoff like when we got blanked by Oregon.

Also I was big on Hammond before this season but not sure he’s the long term answer. And we better cut ties with Leftwich. He was the main reason why our offense stalled often times last season and we had to settle for so many field goals and it’s the same shit this season

I’m predicting us to finish 9-3 now this season

Is it time to move on from Leftwich and Joey?

I think we need to move on from Joey and Leftwich.

I think we need to promote Shiel and go after a big OC - Bring Lincoln back to the South plains?

Welcome to Cincy! Come Hang Out at The Den Tailgate on Saturday

Hey Red Raiders! If you’re making the trip to Cincinnati this weekend, we’re pumped to have you in town for our Homecoming game. Tailgating at UC is a pretty unique setup compared to most campuses; instead of sprawling parking lots, our gameday hub is packed right into the heart of campus. Since navigating a new campus setup can feel like a bit of a parlay on your morning, we want to roll out the welcome mat and invite any traveling Texas Tech fans to swing by The Den. We’re an independent fan-run tailgate group, and our whole goal is to give students, alumni, and visiting fans an awesome, welcoming place to take in the Bearcats gameday experience.

Whether you're looking to hedge your bets on the fall weather with a hot drink or just want to grab a cold beer and talk some college football, we’ve got you covered starting around 8:30 AM right after the campus parade. We’re putting all our chips on a Saturday morning setup featuring a DJ, a keg of Garage Beer on tap, and a local mobile coffee cart serving up specialty coffee drinks and pouring mimosas. You don’t need to bring anything but yourself, though BYOB is always welcome too. If you’re wandering around campus before the noon kickoff, come find us on the commons, grab a drink or a donut, and say hi. Safe travels up to Cincy and enjoy the cit! šŸˆ

Big XII Championship

So let’s just say it’s BYU vs TECH in the championship game. Just assuming all goes well for both teams, the Utes collapse and OSU has surprised the conference.

This observation comes from having watched 1 1/2 quarters of the BYU / ND game.
I just don’t see how Tech can keep up with BYU. Play calling, play innovation, PASSING GAME, defense penetration, special teams and coaching are all on a different level THIS YEAR for BYU. They are like watching Tech in many aspects last year. I’d like to hear others opinions.
I know there is a lot of football to play but I think Tech has been lucky to hang on so far with a sieve for a secondary, qb struggling and an offensive line thats struggling to keep people out.

Again…this is assuming it is TTU & BYU in the BIG XII Championship.

Trying to get a couple tickets to show the kiddo the school and see a game, what’s the best place to get them? Not a fan of stubhub but best seats to watch? Without breaking the bank. Its been only 20 years since I was at the stadium

WVU at TT Tailgating

West Virginian and WVU alum traveling to TX to visit an old WV friend living in Midland. We plan on attending the TexasTech/WVU game. It’s our first time attending an away game so we need advice and this seemed like the best route. What are some pubs locals (not students) usually go to grab beers before or during games? ..that responsible folks need to visit while in town.

We’re both 40+ with kids so nothing crazy. Any watering hole close by that yall recommend?

Also, any Recommendations for local pre or post game food? Not sure if Lubbock is known for anything particular. We don’t get together or out of the house often these days so any input is greatly appreciated!!

Fire Mack Leftwhich

Play calling is absolutely horrendous this season!!!This team isn’t as stacked as it was last year on offense but the play calling sucks! Hammond is struggling but I can’t blame him because there’s no rhythm to the offense. When Hammond struggles they tell him to pass. When he gets hot they start running the ball. The RBs are good but this is the most frustrating offense I’ve seen in years! Fire Leftwhich and bring someone in that can actually call plays

Leftwhich needs to go

When is enough enough? We can’t run the ball. We can’t throw the ball. We can’t game plan. We can’t scheme. No fucking life to this team. Thank god we have a defense or else we’d be losing. For him yesterday PLEASE. #LeftwhichOut

Texas Tech followup on my preseason preview

Hey guys! The season preview I posted here a few weeks back did pretty well, so circling back like I said I would.

I had you at 11-1, and called that the ceiling rather than the baseline because I thought the defense would give some back. So far you're 3-0: Abilene Christian 33-10, 35-24 at Oregon State, and 28-26 over Houston. But the defense that allowed 11.8 a game last year is at 20 so far, and Houston nearly made that cost you. Hammond has done what I said he'd need to, manage it rather than carry it: 63 of 87 for 744 yards and 3 TDs. The road trips to Colorado, Cincinnati and Baylor are still where 11-1 gets decided.

What are you guys seeing that the box scores aren't, and how do you see the season ending up?

Quick aside, we just launched a free weekly college football pick'em, $225 in prizes this week. Ten games, pick the winners, locks Saturday at noon ET, the same time you kick off against Sam Houston. Nothing to buy.

After the First 3 Games, What is Your Final Record Prediction for TTU Football?

Mine is 10-2. I see the best case going 11-1 and the worst case going 9-3. I don’t see the team having an undefeated season. At 10-2 we probably get left out of the Playoff unless we win the Big 12 championship game.

The 2 games I think we lose are either of these: vs Arizona State, @ Oklahoma State, or vs West Virginia.

Will be very interesting to see how each team performs in the Oklahoma State @ West Virginia game this week.

Score Predictions vs. Houston

Here are two scores I'm predicting for us to win:

38–10

OR

57–0 (this would set a new rivalry record for the largest margin of victory by either team in this rivalry)

What are your score predictions for tomorrow night? Comment them down below!
