Engineering & Robotics Researchers 3D-print single-crystal titanium alloy structures over one meter long
π¬ What happened?
Researchers in China developed a 3D-printing method that produced single-crystal titanium alloy structures more than one meter long. They also demonstrated complex lattice structures and single crystals made from several other metals.
π‘ Why use a single crystal?
Most metals contain many crystal grains, and the boundaries between them can become weak points under prolonged heat and stress. Single-crystal structures avoid these boundaries, making them interesting for demanding engineering applications.
βοΈ What's the catch?
The printed titanium showed improved resistance to slow deformation at high temperatures, but commercial-scale production and long-term reliability still need to be demonstrated.
π¬ What do you think?
Could 3D printing make single-crystal metal components practical for more industries, or will manufacturing costs remain the biggest obstacle?
