6.53 ERA career. Good Giant?

This marked the first time in MLB HISTORY that a team had consecutive seasons with different 6’5”+ catchers who had 4 hits.
Nobody knows we achieved this feat - prob not even the 2 catchers. But YOU do!

When Buster Posey watched Games 1 and 2 of the World Series over the weekend, he might have flashed back to his own three championship runs with the San Francisco Giants. He might have remembered the tingling tension that cannot be recreated in any other environment.
But Posey is more than the Giants’ former franchise catcher. He is also the Giants’ president of baseball operations and chief baseball architect. He has to be more concerned with where the game is going than where it’s been. So most of his immediate thoughts were future-focused. And he freely admits it: When it comes to pitching, the Giants are behind the times.
“All of us that love baseball can watch the playoffs and see how much stuff there is in the game right now,” Posey said. “And the best teams have it.”
The Giants, losers of 97 games, were not one of the best teams this past season. And they most definitely did not have it.
In terms of Stuff+, which seeks to measure the overall run value of pitches based on several factors including velocity and movement, the Giants ranked 26th out of 30 major-league teams. Their 19.5 percent strikeout rate ranked 27th. By any measure, including casual observation, the Giants appeared to be well behind the curve when it came to the modern science of making the best hitters in the world feel uncomfortable.
So Posey has been working on more than creating a target list of free-agent and trade upgrades to his rotation and bullpen in what is almost certain to be a disjointed and labor-affected offseason. He also has spent weeks in intense discussions with his staff this past month, exploring how the Giants can tweak their entire pitching infrastructure.
Most of the changes will be process-based, not personnel-based. Pitching coach Justin Meccage will return as the unquestioned leader of the group. Longtime college coach Frank Anderson, who came along with manager Tony Vitello from the University of Tennessee to be the Giants’ director of pitching, will be reclassified as an assistant pitching coach. Jesse Chavez, who was a rookie coach last season after throwing his last major-league pitch in 2025, will return as the bullpen coach.
Perhaps most significantly, assistant pitching coach Christian Wonders will transition from the major-league staff to a high-profile role in the farm system. Wonders will lead efforts to overhaul the pitching development group at a critical time, after the Giants introduced a wave of high-ceiling pitchers into their system via the draft in July and the trade deadline in early August.

One of the few bright spots for the Giants was the minor league system in 2026.
The San Francisco organization even earned Farm System of the Year honors proving just how much depth this team has and how much it has improved.
The Giants finally have a list of promising young players who could eventually provide some affordable production and move this team forward with more stability.
But, that isn’t going to happen overnight, either. With that in mind, Posey should be cautious in trading away all this talent for a temporary “fix”.
Of course, every deal would have to be considered, but in doing so, the team should determine whether it would move the organization forward and increase its winning chances further than just 2027.
Players should be added who can be part of the next winning era, not just avoiding another embarrassing season.

"The Giants were not the most aggressive team in baseball. In fact, their 47.9 percent swing rate was 11th in baseball. Nevertheless, they displayed a suboptimal approach, as their 34.0 percent chase rate and 66.6 percent zone swing rate were both in the bottom third of baseball."

Welp, that did not go well for Randy Rodriguez. He wasn’t able to get anyone out as he walked three of the four batters he faced…but it wasn’t a simple complete loss of control, as I went into some detail about his performance. But in addition, Dakota Jordan did have a good game as Scottsdale lost in extra innings. And everyone’s games were shorter than normal as this Saturday tripleheader was played at Camelback Ranch at Glendale.
Sorry everyone, I should have given a warning that Friday the 23rd was an off-day…but hey, that’s why there was no post for Friday! And for what it’s worth, it’ll be a normal Sunday off, so no post coming for that day.
Let’s take a look at a prospect who might remind you of a former Giant. Peyton Olejnik isn’t on the MLB Pipeline rankings for the Angels, but he does rank #29 for the team from Baseball America. And he stands out when he stands up, as a 6’11” pitcher on the mound. If he makes the Majors, he will tie former Giant Sean Hjelle (and former Expos/Nationals pitcher Jon Rauch) as the tallest players in MLB history. But he’s got to get there first. The 6th round pick in 2024 had a strong start to his pro career, as he led the California League in strikeouts with 130 in 128.2 innings in 2025, while posting a 4.20 ERA. He has a mid-90’s fastball and has an effective sweeper. But Olejnik really needs to refine his changeup, which has a lot of potential, in order to neutralize left-handed batters if he is going to have a chance to stick as a starter going forward. But he could see a similar path as what Hjelle had to the majors, where his size is its own type of changeup for hitters in relief, with the ability to spot-start when needed.

Tim Hill of the New York Yankees (and a former Padre) and Hoby Milner (Cubs and Mariners in 2026) could add unique arm angles to the Giants bullpen.

My best friend is the guy from a few years ago who dropped a foul ball and was given a ball by Duane Kuiper after the fact [hit me up for the video, seriously]. I’m giving a speech at his wedding and would love to include a video from Duane. If anyone can put me in touch with Cole and/or Duane Kuiper to pre-record a video for their wedding I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you all!

I'm anti-trading good prospects for starting pitchers coming off of a 97-loss season, but here's some options (both high end and mid-range).

Or, did you wonder if a former teammate of a 1990 San Francisco Giant is STILL pitching in professional baseball right now? If so, seek help, it's weird.

Anyhow, one of Richie's former teammates is indeed STILL active, and his name is Rafael Cova.
Cova is still throwing relief right now in the Venezuelan Winter League (LVBP) for the Tiburones de La Guaira.
If that's not ridiculous enough, Cova's list of former teammates includes an even wilder deep-cut Giants name: Ed Vosberg. Vosberg pitched for the 1990 San Francisco Giants. Later in his career, Vosberg cross-paths with Cova in the minors.

1. Luis Hernández, SS/3B, Giants (SF No. 2/MLB No. 25)
Top international prospects are no guarantee to succeed -- just look at Yoelqui Céspedes in 2021 and Roderick Arias in '22 -- but Hernández has lived up to the hype and then some after signing for $4,997,500. Skipping straight to the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League before a 20-game cameo with Single-A San Jose in his debut season, the Venezuela native offers rare polish for his age but still has a lofty ceiling, thanks to advanced pitch recognition and quality bat speed from the right side. Hernández is quite athletic, even if his average speed lags behind his other potentially plus tools, and his headiness should help him maximize his skill set.

It was a day for offense across the valley in Arizona, as four of the six teams had double-digit runs (and then Mesa didn’t score any). Scottsdale had the best day with 15 runs, with three Giants in the batting lineup. But it was Dalton Wentz who had the biggest day with four hits out of the number 9 spot of the lineup, easily having his best game in the Fall League. Meanwhile, two Giants pitchers’ had their first rough games in the fall. And…I can’t ignore them forever, today our non-Giant highlight prospect is a Dodger.
Yeah, I’m talking about a Dodger prospect today. Chase Harlan was the 98th overall pick in the 2024 draft by the Dodgers out of a Pennsylvania high school, but missed his debut season after having surgery to repair the labrum in his right hip. His 2025 season mostly had him coming back from that injury, but in 2026 he showed off his tools a bit more, hitting .298 with a .912 OPS in 86 games, in which he hit 22 doubles, three triples, and 14 home runs. Harlan’s abilities lie mostly in his bat, as his plus power could rate double-plus, and his bat hitting tool shows the ability to get to it often enough, with a short, quick swing to make contact. He does have trouble at hitting offspeed pitches, which he will have to face more of as he moves up the system. But for a big power hitter, his split against right-handed pitching was greatly improved in 2026. He moves decently well, even after his hip surgery, and has the arm for third base, but needs to clean up his mechanics there to stick, with the outfield remaining a backup plan defensively. But the exit velocity Harlan has will keep him dangerous as he goes up the system, wherever he plays defensively.

Giants: Tanner Mally, OF (unranked)
Mally went in the 17th round after winning the NCAA Division I batting title with a .446 average and setting Western Michigan records with 87 hits and a .554 on-base percentage. A career .400 hitter in college, he has elite bat-to-ball skills and well-above-average speed that translated into a .383/.523/.494 pro debut with eight steals in 24 Single-A games.

A lot of the AFL teams kept out their top prospects on a rainy day, none moreso than Scottsdale, who only played two Top-30 ranked guys, including the Giants’ Kaeden Kent. That led to some lackluster games, and one very shortened game today as a storm comes across the southwest. Plus, we take a look at at one of the top picks from the 2026 draft from the Royals system.
If you were playing close attention to the MLB Draft this past summer, Zion Rose is a name you might remember. The Louisville outfielder’s well-rounded skills had him valued pretty well in the draft, but that had him ranked #20 by Baseball America and #30 by MLB Pipeline, and yet the Royals drafted him with the #6 pick in the draft. The former catcher was moved into the outfield in college, and was one of six Division-I players to hit 30 extra-base hits and 30 steals in 2025, and injuries robbed him of repeating that in 2026. He hit .268 with a .727 OPS in 19 games in a brief pro debut before getting the aggressive placement in the Arizona Fall League. So far, Rose is responding well against far more experienced competition. After he went 3-for 5 with a pair of steals today, Rose is slashing .357/.526/.536 with a 1.062 OPS, and seven walks to seven strikeouts, with five steals in six attempts.

Great article by Hannah Keyser of CNN about the effect increased gambling exposure (particularly prediction markets) is having on fans, even those who already gamble. She looks at the new PM deals between MLB and Polymarket and select teams and Kalshi.
As anyone who follows the Giants on social media knows, the posts announcing the sponsorship deal with Kalshi received pretty much universal distain, as did all other teams' announcements. Wisely, those other teams decided not to comment when contacted by CNN for this piece. The Giants... well, you can read the screenshots for yourself. Full article linked below:
