Minor subreddit update- all posts require manual mod approval

Several months ago, this subreddit was inundated with repeated off-topic posts from a well known troll/spammer. Bans did not work because the user just came back with a new account.

To combat this, it was decided to implement a rule where all posts require manual approval from a moderator. If you noticed the spammer hasn't posted here in a while, that's why.

Unfortunately, this means posts will only go live when a moderator is online and checks the mod queue, so there may be a delay of many hours before posts show up. Mods have jobs and lives outside of reddit. You are not shadow banned.

Several users have been sending mod mail after every post, thinking this will help their post be approved faster. This is unhelpful- we will see the mod mail the same time we see the post in the mod queue. Please stop messaging moderators about this.

If your post is not approved, that means it violated some rule. You may have also noticed there are fewer posts recently with low effort questions about unsafe ways to make motors (violating rule 2)- this is why.

Building my first model rocket (Buzzard-01) with a custom Raspberry Pi Pico flight computer. Just finished the v1.3 tweaks!

Hi everyone,

I’m 13 years old and currently working on my first model rocket project called Buzzard-01. I watched a bunch of BPS.space videos and thought it's not gonna be that hard... well, turns out it's a lot of work, but amazing to learn!

I designed a custom flight computer in KiCad specifically for this rocket. It features a Raspberry Pi Pico as the brain, space for up to 3 sensors (IMU, barometer) to log flight data, a battery connection, and an ON/OFF switch. I just finished tweaking the files for release 1.3. The next step will be writing the flight software in MicroPython to read the sensors during launch.

Since I want to share my journey, the whole project is completely open-source. You can check out the OpenRocket simulations, 3D models, and KiCad files here: https://github.com/MaxFoerster-Dev/Buzzard-01

I would love to hear your thoughts, tips for the upcoming flight software, or general advice for a beginner building custom avionics!

Question Antenna recommendations for a 30,000 ft rocket — TeleMega and Featherweight Swift

Hi everyone! We’re using an Altus Metrum TeleMega and a Featherweight Swift on a high-power rocket targeting 30,000 ft, with a launch planned in Midland, Texas.

I’m looking for antenna recommendations for both systems. They both came with wire whip antennas, but some of my research has pointed toward SMA antennas as a possible alternative. Would those be suitable for this application, or would you recommend sticking with the supplied whips?

If anyone has flown or tested these systems at similar altitudes, I’d appreciate hearing about your setup and results. My RF knowledge is still limited, so I’m learning as I go. Thanks!

Question Does anyone know what this thing is for?

This hexagonal structure at the end of many single-use model rocket motors:

I never posted here, so I've no idea if this post is appropriate.

I have an assignment to study this little motor, of model "G80T", but they're not even for sale in my country, and there seems to be little to no specifics about it online.

The main things I want to know:

  1. What it that painted hexagonal-nut-looking thing on the forward end of the motor;
  2. What is the diameter of the thrust ring / lip.

If anyone has one of these motors, or knows about it enough to help me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Again, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask for this info, and if it's not, I'd love to know where I should ask instead.

Thanks in advance!

Question Anyone can help find a reliable S6A model rocket supplier?

Long story short, a friend’s kid went to a competition but the rockets the team used got problems in a large scale, and the said friend is looking for alternative suppliers.

We are Chinese and he always has been looking for suppliers domestically, this time we are trying to expand the search and see if we can find some reliable ones outside the border. Anyone knows anything about it? I found xkmodels, some “aero master”, Apogee, but the lack of information is a major block.

We are looking for carbon fiber rockets for S6A competition, 40mm wide/500mm-505mm long, weight lower than 4g.

Issue with filament Nosecone

My 3" filament wound fiberglass nosecone from Wildman didn't survive ground testing. Yes, the ejection charge was a little spicy, but the failure mode looks like there are very few fibers contributing to axial strength. That and the wall was very thin. I was curious if others have experienced this. Between this issue and the long lead times, it looks like I'll be making my own nosecones moving forward.

Showcase I designed and 3D printed a 60cm Saturn V with its internal engineering exposed!

I wanted to recreate the Apollo 11 Saturn V in a way that shows not just its iconic exterior, but also the engineering behind it.

This is my 1:185 scale, 60cm Saturn V cutaway, featuring all 11 main stage engines, propellant tanks, feedlines, and exposed structural details.

You can check out more details about its internal details, print files and full breakdown HERE

Designed entirely in Fusion 360 and printed on my Bambu Lab A1 in 23 pieces, without generated supports!

Some details were simplified or reinforced for FDM printing while keeping the engineering as historically accurate as practical.

It's a static display model, not a flyable rocket.

Really happy with how it turned out! Thought you guys might appreciate the engineering side of it

Question what glue should i buy for my model rocket kit?

Post image
16 Upvotes

hello! i’m buying supplies to build the Estes Banshee rocket. on the website, it tells you to use plastic glue. when you look at the manual, it uses plastic glue to attach a nozzle (made of plastic) to the body tube (made of paper). i assume most plastic cement brands are for plastic on plastic only. so what exactly do i do here and what do i buy? i’m a bit new to all of this, so it’s a bit confusing.

thanks!

Can an M145 × 1.5 Threaded Closure Safely Withstand 1200 psi in an Aluminium Rocket Propellant Tank?

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hey everyone, need some advice on a threaded closure for our liquid rocket propellant tank.

Tank specs:

  • Material: Aluminium 6082-T6
  • OD/ID: 154 mm / 140 mm
  • Operating pressure: 1200 psi (8.27 MPa)
  • Thread: M145 × 1.5
  • Engagement length: 30 mm
  • Closure material: Aluminium 6082-T6
  • Repeated pressurization

As shown in the attached cross-section, the female thread is machined directly into the tank end, with no thickened boss.

My question: How can I verify whether the threads and tank end can safely withstand the pressure without stripping, yielding, or failing under repeated cycles? What calculations, standards, or FEA methods should I use?

Any technical guidance or relevant references would be appreciated!

Blank Rocket Bulk Packs for Birthday Party

Hey there--my son's birthday is coming up and I was hoping that one of the activities for his party could be decorating model rockets that would ultimately be functional. Looks like Estes has some bulk packs, but the rockets still have some designs on them and I'd be looking for examples that are more "blank."

Has anyone had any success here / know of any places we might be able to look? Thanks in advance.

Testing out some insane FPS capabilities with the GoPro 13. For those wanting audio, unfortunately it sounded very distorted so that wasn't going to work out.
