Hi all, hoping someone's hit this before.
I was working on a large Word document stored on SharePoint/OneDrive for work. My best theory is that AutoSave got switched off partway through, possibly tied to an internal update on sensitivity labelling, and around the same time, a Windows update forced my computer to restart. Together that seems like exactly the kind of situation that could cause recent edits to be lost, since AutoSave off plus an unexpected restart is close to a worst-case combination.
When I came back to the document, a significant chunk of recent work (roughly 20 hours' worth) was simply missing, and the version in SharePoint version history doesn't include it either.
What I've already checked:
• SharePoint version history - no version contains the missing content.
• Word's AutoRecover file location (set to C:\Temp) - nothing relevant found.
• Windows %TEMP% folder - searched for .asd, .wbk, and tilde-dollar owner files, nothing found.
• Word's Recover Unsaved Documents option (File > Info > Manage Document).
• The "when I closed without saving" version under Manage Document.
• Office Document Cache folder - found but looked old/unrelated.
Has anyone recovered lost Word content in a situation like this, where AutoSave was off and a forced restart hit mid-session? Specifically interested in:
• Any lesser-known local cache/recovery locations for Word on Windows.
• Whether a Windows Update forced restart leaves behind any recoverable Office session data.
• Whether OneDrive sync logs can ever reveal an orphaned local version.
• Any tools people have used to find "ghost" Word temp files that don't show up in a normal search.
Any pointers appreciated, this was a lot of work to lose.
