Discussion Wait, Metroid 2 is actually really good!?
I'm not gonna lie, the way that people always put Metroid 1 & 2 together, when talking about how they didn't age well and newcomers should better play the remakes, I always assumed they would be similar in that regard.
But after completing M1 for the first time (with a romhack for SNES that removed all the crazy lag and added an ingame map) and now having played M2 through NSO, I feel like Metroid 2 is actually a huge improvement over the first game.
I completely understood what people meant, when they say M1 didn't age well, the vanilla game lags almost all the time. For example as soon as there are too many enemies on screen, which happends constantly.
The lack of a map makes this game a nightmare to navigate, especially because the developers copy and pasted so many rooms over and over again. Which leads to some very strange places, where a layout was copied that originally had hidden blocks, which were hiding items, but after being copied now just have hidden blocks that lead to nothing.
The controls actually felt completely fine in my opinion, considering it was the first game and also on NES. Overall I had a pretty good experience with the romhack and I think I would've had a fine experience with the OG, if the game didn't lag all the time.
Now with M2, I assumed it was gonna have the same flaws as M1, but to my surprise it acutally fixed almost all of the problems, that made M1 so unplayable for me.
I don't remember the game even lagging once, which already made the experience so much better. The screen was smaller but I never felt like it was to close. The enemy design and platforming was obviously specifically made for the small screen size, so it never became an issue for me.
And the craziest one for me: You can actually navigate through the game, without the need of a map. Don't get me wrong, the lack of a map still makes the game a little worse, than it could've been if it had one, but they actually designed the world with unique locations and room layouts, that help you remember what each area is and don't confuse you as much as M1.
The controls also felt a little smoother, which is very nice. On top of that the setting and atmosphere were really good and I love the plot of the game so much. Especially when you think about, how the events of the game tie into future games.
Long story short, if you tried M1 like me and felt discouraged from trying out M2, I honestly really recommend still giving it a try. I had a really great time with the game and it has become one of my favorite Gameboy games.
