So there's some good news, and some bad news:
The bad news is that Ohio State clinched the B1G regular season title this afternoon with a win over Illinois. Our loss to Purdue a few weeks ago narrowed our path and then to Penn State made it all but impossible, so unfortunate but not surprising.
The good news is that the NCAA Women's Soccer committee announced their top 16 teams today, and we come in at #5. We have a pretty good record against the other teams on this list, we have beaten #1 North Carolina, #6 Colorado, and #15 UCLA, and we got a draw against #9 Notre Dame.
Most of those games were earlier in the season though, there have been some concerning upsets recently like the aforementioned Penn State game. Purdue does seem to be better than expected though, so perhaps that wasn't as bad as I originally feared. However, the team certainly has demonstrated that they can square up against the best teams in the country, we just gotta get back in that gear as we enter the post-season!
Our final regular season game will be on Friday at Northwestern. They are... not great. While we do not need any help making either tournament, we should certainly try to get the best seed possible in both!
The B1G women's soccer tournament will be starting on Nov. 4. The quarterfinals will be on B1G+ but the semifinal and final will be on BTN. The final will also be hosted on the higher seed's turf instead of Energizer Park in St. Louis (why the B1G chose a venue in a state with no conference teams is beyond me...)
Our exact seeding will depend on the outcome of the Northwestern game and UCLA's game against USC, but it seems likely we will be 3, possibly 2 if UCLA loses. Last season, we beat UCLA in overtime then faced Washington in the final but fell on penalty kicks. The Huskies have stumbled a bit this season, so we are more likely to see a rematch with UCLA or quite possibly meet Ohio State for the first time this season.
Go Green! đđ¤
