About 5 months ago I made the questionable decision to knit a self-drafted, steeked, fairisle cardigan for my then 7-month-old.
I knew that I should aim to make it much too big, but wasn't sure how big. Well, I think I nailed it. 11 months old and room to grow!
I also gave myself grace when my life got crazy busy to convert to simple stockinette for the sleeves. I actually think this turned out looking pretty cute.
I think she will be able to wear it all winter (which is good, because it was a silly amount of work)!

2 weeks ago I decided after years of being too intimidated to try, that I would finally commit to learning to knit. I couldn’t get it with DIY videos so I decided to sign up for a knitting course and that helped it click for me. I’m someone who learns by asking questions, so having a person to talk to in real time helped a lot.

This is nothing crazy by any means, but the small progress I’ve made from swatch 1 to swatch 5 is exciting. :) I can’t wait to dive into socks and sweaters. No idea what yarn I used because it was gifted to me without wrapping.

I have the pattern for the S*phie Hood, but I heard that’s best as like a second project. Flat knitting in garter stitch does call to me….(I do still need to learn increases, decreases, and I-cord edging). I planned to do the Step by Step Sweater too. Have yet to learn to knit in the round, but I did buy sets of interchangeable circular needles, so it’s on my list.

Does anyone else have any beginner friendly patterns or projects they’d recommended? Any advice or tips in general for a newbie? I’d also gladly accept any feedback on my tension or technique. Thanks for having me and I’m stoked to be a part of this community!

Yarn: Woll Butt Madeleine
Pattern: based on https://youtu.be/_NpYRfha11c?is=y4pvYI12MflHfs5P

I learned to knit as a child but basically didn‘t knit anything for the last 20 years except for one singular scarve about 10 years ago. I‘m a pretty experienced crocheter though.
One day youtube suggested this video to me and I instantly knew that I had to knit a sweater now. I didn‘t want to spend a lot of money so I decided to start with a small one for my toddler with some leftover yarn from 2 seperate crochet projects. I developed some kind of hyper focus and finished the thing in 2 weeks.
I honestly love how it turned out and my toddler doesn‘t want to wear anything else now. This probably made me wayy to confident and now I’ve spent close to 100€ on yarn for a ballet wrap cardigan which I‘m planning to freestyle based on an old drops pattern. Wish me luck, everyone.

Discussion Anyone here a member of The Knitting Guild Association?

• Upvotes

Just came to say that anyone wanting to learn or those wanting to up there knitting game I recommend you join the Knitting Guild Association and sign up for a course or 2. They have a few immersion weekends for specific project types like socks and shawls as well as courses ranging from very basic knitting to master knitting with certifications if desired. They recently had a presentation on yarn and yarn literacy. Wow. Excellent presentation and I am now way more confident when subbing yarns. Best thing I ever did.

Discussion Knitting is forcing me to get fit

This strikes me as so ironic. After a lifetime of wanting and intending to do more about my physical fitness, it seems that my love for knitting, a sedentary activity, is what is finally pushing me to stick to a regular fitness routine. My job forces me to sit at a computer all day, and sadly I'm not in a financial position to ditch that any time soon. After my work day, what I want to do to relax is knit, but my lately my back has had a lot to say about this situation. I've come to realize that if I'm going to keep knitting in my life, I'm going to have to fit exercise in as well, to save my back, neck, and shoulders from pain and injury. I honestly don't think I've ever been so motivated to prioritize movement because hell no am I giving up knitting. Has anyone else had to implement any specific physical self-care to keep yourself knitting comfortably?

Help 😭 last pic is before blocking, and this sweater literally doubled in size. I knew it would be oversized but not this big after blocking. Do cables felt okay? How long should I put it in the dryer for and what setting?

This is the Fisherman’s wharf sweater in drops Alaska btw.

Patterns: cupholder mitten by Chialee Yeh, and Tincan knits Worlds Simplest Mitten
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cupholder-mitten

Yarn: Skein Tones Worsted Acrylic in Adobe

Hands will now be protected during those late season evening games when it starts getting a little too chilly for Texans! There’s some weird ribbing on the thumbed mitten, but I thought I’d try the “flip the ribbing inside out” trick for the first time and clearly only perfected it by the time I got to the beer mitt! All imperfections aside, I’m happy with them!

Work in Progress Pray for my sanity

I've made the, somewhat foolish, decision to once again knit a cardigan while alternating 3 balls of hand dyed yarn. Except for this time, I also decided to hold it double with a strand of lace weight cashmere/ silk blend, because why not? 🤪 Let's see how far I get before I completely lose my mind 😅

Pattern: Pinstripe Cardigan by Oh what a knit

Wool: Giggling Gecko DK, super wash merino in custom dye

Held with 1 strand of Cardiff Cashmere Prime, 70/30 cashmere and silk

I’ve been knitting since I was 7 since my grandmother taught me but with life I hadn’t really picked up needles for a long time. As a means to avoid screen time to teach my toddler to not watch so many screens, I decided to make things for everyone I know. This scarf is for my sister. It’s the first time I made anything with a lace pattern and omg this yarn drove me insane. It has a few errors but I managed to hide many of them creatively. I’m proud of myself and realised I actually loved doing lace but never again with a yarn that finicky to work with.

Work in Progress I wasn’t sure if this handspun would suit lace, but I’m loving it and can’t wait to see it once it’s blocked

The yarn is my handspun, a 3 ply mix of BFL and Falkland. The pattern is Lacy Day Vest, which I’m really enjoying! The lace repeat is easily memorized, but still engaging enough to not get bored. I’m a little concerned I might be juuuuuust short on yardage, so I’m thinking of doing the collar and hem in a store bought yarn

(Bonus pre-blocking shot in the last pic. Blocking lace is magic.)

I recently finished the gorgeous Evenstar Shawl as a gift for a knitting friend. Fortunately she is a fantastic friend who I know would truly appreciate it because I can't lie it was hard to hand over when it was finished! It was super fun to knit. It's my first circular shawl and it knit up surprisingly fast. Up until the knit on border which felt like it lasted forever!

Yarn is Wild Atlantic Yarn's Niamh Lace in the 'Deep in the Woods' colourway and I can't recommend it more.

Finished Object First Cable

This is my second knitting project and I wanted to try cables. I sorely mistook how long it would take. I thought about 5 hours. It took 11 😊

I used Mirasol llama hasa yarn. It’s ridiculously soft and really comfortable but I found it a little difficult to work with, granted I’m a complete newb. The yarn seems to split and fray easily and it “flattens” out. I guess it unravels but creates a flat looking stitch. It took a while to get used to it.

Now, these cables don’t “seem” difficult but what I did find challenging were the C8, C10, and C12’s. No matter how loose my stitches were the resulting stitches on the right needle were extremely tight and it took a lot of strength to move around the needles. I used a really thin cable needle, positioned the points really close together but they still ended up tight. I suspect it was just due to the large number of stitches involved and the fact the yarn has no elasticity. Overall I’m pretty happy how it turned out!

I’m Always looking for some feedback on how to improve. Let me know what you think

Discussion I lost knitting to illness

I have been ill for more than a year (most likely, long covid/ME but honestly the healthcare system is not trying very hard where I am to properly diagnose me) and I lost the ability to do a lot of things in my life: exercising, my job, cooking, taking care of myself, currently trying regaining walking. Losing knitting sucks so much. I have my project board, my wips, all sitting in the dust for more than a year now. It is heartbreaking as I never thought I would lose it. One week I was happily knitting, the next it was over. Enjoy knitting extra hard for me please 💕

Tips and Tricks How do I search for images of FOs using indie dyed style of varigated yarns?

I really tried to see if this has been asked before on several subs, to no avail. Please let me know if there is a better sub for this post bc i really couldnt figure out after reading all the rules

indie dyed varigated yarn always looks pretty in the hank but often knits up unpredictably — I cant figure out how to search on Ravelry for different executions so i can get a sense of what tends to look good vs what tends to look kinda, ummm, *less* good. i have this yarn that i have completely unravelled 4 times because i struggle to use it. the big companies make these (in my experience) with more regular parts of each color even if its not the same so thats easy to use, but obviously big box small fun :(
