Favorite Misunderstood Invertebrates

Vinegarroon's look pretty intimidating, but they're actually really great pets!

These invertebrates are non-venomous, and their primary form of self-defense is spraying an acidic mist that smells strongly of vinegar. In their native environments, they work as excellent pest control for other bugs like roaches or termites. Their strong pincers, or pedipalps, may look frightening but are for crushing their insect prey or digging burrows into humid habitats.

What are some of your favorite misunderstood invertebrates?

Community Tank??

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello!! Pls give some suggestions!! I’m desp 😋

I have an empty 90x45x45 exo terra, and would love to have a community or large colony invert tank.

All my previous tanks have included live plants/clean up crews etc, so hoping to be able to stick with this - if it looks prettier, then my partner will be happier when it’s full of bugs ha.

What would you recommend for this size tank?

I’ve had plenty of humid/forest style tanks, so I think a drier/desert animal could be a nice change? But think it may be easier to do a large colony tank of humidity lovers maybe? Idk!

My initial thought is roaches - maybe banana roaches?? But think something bigger/more exciting would look better in this big tank?

I’ve had a range of cockroaches, snails, isopods, stick insects & millipedes before (in separate tanks). I’ve also had a leopard gecko and a scorpion too, so pretty open for any and all suggestions! [except spiders, I’d looooove to have one one day, but I don’t think I’m ready for them justttt yet]

In dire need of help for a spontaneous setup

• Upvotes

I am getting pet beetles (3 mecynorhina torquata ugandensis females), but the shipping of all the terrarium stuff got delayed. All I have is the terrarium itself, a few plants still in their pots and a large piece of driftwood. The beetles will be here any day but the rest, especially the electronics (heat lamps since I live in a colder climate and light) may still take weeks. As well as the beetle jelly. How can I keep the girls happy and thriving until then? I don’t have the budget to buy lots of stuff and there isn’t really any pet shop around.

Isopod breeding question

So, I’ve been interested for a long while in the way people selectively breed of all sorts of creatures, but especially bugs. I’ve just got my first colony of isopods, and I wanted to ask some questions about it, as I’m interested in getting into it when the colony gets bigger.

First of all, how flexible are the posibilities? I have dairy cows, and I know it’s possible to breed them to have little to no spots. Could I go the other way around and breed ones with so many spots they’re almost all black? Could I selectively breed for huge antennae, or giant uropods? Last of all, and most importantly: I LOVE when bugs are freakishly huge, so is it possible to breed for size?

Importantly, since I don’t want to be some kind of sick mad scientist and I want to treat these creatures well, is there danger of genetic problems or other issues? How can I be as safe as possible when breeding isopods?

Sorry if this post comes across as the ramblings of a madman, I hope it’s decipherable, and any help, redirection or criticism is much appreciated!

It’s been a little while since I last posted a progress report on Reddit but I’ve finally made a resin cast on my stick sculpture!
A lot of work has gone into mould making and crafting individual feet and spines.

With any luck I’ll soon be able to fully assemble the work and start painting!! :D

Woodlouse Spider?

I have woodlouse spiders in my backyard and an abundance of woodlice (armadillidium vulgares) in my terrarium, you can see where this is going. Other than feeding, does anyone have care tips for these beautiful spiders? Attached image is a possible enclosure.

How to find communities and where to get arthropod eggs? (Like stick insects and praying mantises, for example)

Hey there! What's up, everyone? So, I recently set up a terrarium because I became really interested in raising and observing insects.

However, since I have a huge passion for Phasmatodea and Mantodea, the first thing I did was search online to see how I could get the eggs to raise, but I can't find them anywhere :(

I have experience raising moths and stink bugs, but all in research institutions where I worked. I did some research and the suggestion was to look for communities of other enthusiasts and interested people who could shed some light on this. Reddit, my dear friends, I choose you!

What do I do?

I found this wee guy in my lettuce, he was stuck in the fridge for 3 days.

I put a damp paper towel in a tupperware, some lettuce and made some holes in the lid.

I was planning to keep him for a few days to make up for the time in the fridge and then release.

But now I gave him a name. Frieda Peat ( Free the Pete)

What would a cheap diy setup be? I looked at some acrylic terrariums as well but he's tiny and the holes looked a bit big.

Should I even keep him in the first place?
