Alter Zero: a Rust agent harness for coding, cybersecurity, and automation

https://github.com/linuztx/alter-zero
Hi everyone, I'm developing Alter Zero, an open-source terminal agent for coding, cybersecurity, and automation. It's written in Rust and runs on Linux and macOS, and it's inspired by Claude Code and Codex CLI combined.

It works directly in your project: reading files, making edits, running commands, and checking the results. You can ask it to investigate a failing test, trace authentication and access checks in your own code, or write a script to summarize logs.

It can also interact with running terminal programs and keep commands running in the background. There's support for subagents, reusable skills, MCP servers, and resuming previous sessions. With /secrets, it can use your API keys and tokens without ever seeing the values.

It's light on resources: a single ~24 MB binary that typically uses 20–60 MB of RAM per session (~100 MB of free RAM is a comfortable recommendation), and it stays low even when subagents are running. It's also prompt- and token-efficient, so your API spend stretches further per task.

You can connect supported model providers, use local models through Ollama, or add a custom OpenAI-compatible API. The latest release, v0.15.0, adds simpler custom-provider configuration and shows generated file content as it streams.

The project is licensed under Apache-2.0. Installation instructions and a demo are in the repository: https://github.com/linuztx/alter-zero

I'd appreciate feedback, especially on the setup process, terminal compatibility, and tasks where it gets stuck. Issues and contributions are welcome.

I made a screen time app where the number goes up when you're off your phone

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I made Presence because I wanted a screen time number I'd actually be happy to look at.

How I made it:

  • Designed every screen in SwiftUI, with a rounded font (Fredoka) and a mint-to-lavender gradient so it feels calm, not clinical
  • The ring fills with time away; the percent of your goal rides on the end of the line
  • Apple's Screen Time APIs only report phone use per hour, so I wrote a small model that estimates your longest unplugged stretches from those hourly totals
  • Widgets and the app share the exact same drawing code, so they always match

It's free on the App Store, with an optional Plus upgrade. Happy to talk about any part of the build.

I made a free stock market game that lets you play through market history

• Upvotes

It's called Rise to Riches: https://investmentsimulator.app/

The idea is simple: take a virtual portfolio through years of market history in one sitting and see how your decisions work out. Buy companies you recognize, hold through the rough years, or try to beat the S&P 500. You can also put friends in the same room and see who finishes ahead.

I think the fun is seeing whether the strategy that sounded great in your head actually survives a round. Everything uses virtual money, it's free, and you don't need an account for solo play. The annual returns come from historical data; the price movements inside each year are simulated.

The site has passed 20,000 visitors, and I'm trying to get it in front of more people and improve it from their feedback. If you try it, tell me what made you keep playing or what made you leave. I'd especially like to know whether the controls make sense before the first year ends.

Building Practical AI Automation for Everyday Business Tasks 🤖

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! 👋

We're working on Cortenex AI, a project focused on exploring how AI can help businesses spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time on the work that actually matters.

One thing we've noticed is how much time everyday business operations can take up — responding to customer enquiries, keeping track of leads, sending follow-up messages, and preparing reports.

We're interested in exploring ways AI agents and automated workflows could make these tasks easier without making business operations more complicated.

Some areas we're exploring include:

  • Automating repetitive administrative workflows
  • Helping businesses manage customer enquiries
  • Streamlining lead follow-ups and reBuilding Practical AI Automation for Everyday Business Tasks 🤖 minders
  • Turning business data into useful insights

We're still interested in learning which problems matter most to business owners and builders, rather than assuming AI is the answer to everything.

For those building projects or running a business: What's one repetitive task you wish you could eliminate from your daily routine?

I'd love to hear about real problems people are facing and learn from your experiences.

I made an app that sorts every screenshot you take into the right category

• Upvotes

It's called Pizazoo, and it's for people whose camera roll is half screenshots.

It finds the screenshots in your photo library and files them into categories like Receipts, Chats, Travel, Shopping and Code. Then you can find any of them by the text inside, mark them up, blur private details, and clear the originals out of Photos. On a Mac it does the same thing the moment you take a screenshot.

Free to use, with a one-time Pro upgrade (no subscription). Everything is sorted on your device.

Blob Buster! - Cute squishy block puzzle game

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Like a lot of puzzle fans, I was pretty annoyed after seeing the recent breakdown exposing how games like Block Blast secretly use a "kill switch" algorithm—deliberately giving you unplayable pieces to end your run and push ads.

As a dev, that felt super cheap.

Block puzzles should test your spatial logic, not manipulate your board behind the scenes just to force a retry.

So I spent time working on Blob Buster!

Instead of rigging the deck against you, I built a piece generator that actually evaluates your board space. You still get a tough, brain-teasing challenge, but your high score is entirely based on your strategy—no secret kill switches, guaranteed impossible drops, or forced algorithm losses.

What’s in the game:

Truly Fair Gameplay: Every piece hand is math-checked against your available spaces so good play gets rewarded.

Satisfying Combos: Cute, bouncy blob animations and sound design when you clear rows.

Pure Relaxation: No clock, no artificial pressure.
I’d love for fellow puzzle lovers to give it a spin and tell me how the board balance feels!

I made a multiplayer Bible trivia game for phones, would love feedback

• Upvotes

Hey all, I made Psalmly, a free Bible trivia game for church groups and families. One person hosts, everyone joins from their own phone with a room code, and you can put it on a TV if you want.

website

I just redid the first screen so you can see all the games up front, and the ones that need an account show a lock. You can try the join screen or the solo game without signing up.

Would love honest feedback, especially on how it looks and feels on your phone, and whether the locked games are clear or confusing. Thanks!

I built Memvo — an open-source iPhone photo backup app using Telegram as storage

• Upvotes

I built Memvo because I wanted to back up my iPhone photos and videos in their original quality without paying for another cloud storage subscription.

Instead of building a separate storage backend, Memvo uses a private Telegram channel to store backups. It also supports optional client-side AES-256-GCM encryption, so media is encrypted before upload.

Features:

  • Original-quality photo and video backups
  • HEIC, ProRAW, Live Photos, and 4K video support
  • Optional client-side encryption
  • Swift and GPL-3.0 open source
  • iOS IPA for sideloading and a macOS app

It's still an early project, and I'm continuing to improve it. I'd love feedback on the idea, implementation, and backup/restore experience.

I made an iOS focus timer inspired by time travel

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm an independent iOS developer, and I recently launched FocusTrek.

I wanted to experiment with a different feeling of focus. Instead of just watching a countdown, you enter a phone booth, start a session, and travel through time. When the session ends, you discover a destination and an event associated with that moment.

I'm still learning what resonates with people, so I'd genuinely appreciate your feedback.

A few questions I'm exploring:

  • Does the time-travel idea make focusing more engaging?
  • Would you prefer historical destinations, future destinations, or both?
  • What would make you want to use a focus timer every day?

Here's the App: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/focustrek/id6761837109

Thanks for taking a look!

full disclosure i'm the founder of rove setups, this is our thing. it's 2 or 3 extra screens that fold out of one case and sit around your laptop. one usb-c cable to the laptop for video (displaylink) plus the screens' own power adapter. made it bc i was sick of alt tabbing all day in hotels and coworkings. if you want to look: https://www.rovesetups.com/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=imadethis what do you put where, code middle and docs on the side?

I’m building a Mac menu bar app with dozens of features: screenshots, OCR, PDF, image & video tools, all on-device

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Hi! I'm building Menubarista: one Mac menu bar app for the small jobs I used to need ten apps for.

- Screenshots + annotation, OCR

- Batch image resize/compress/convert

- Sign, merge and compress PDFs

- Trim and compress video, GIFs, screen recording

- A two-pane file manager, clipboard history and more

- Workflows that chain them together

Everything runs on your Mac. No account, no cloud, no subscription.

Not out yet. Needs macOS 15+ on Apple silicon. Waitlist with an early-bird discount: https://menubarista.com/

Which app would you happily uninstall if this did its job well?

I got tired of juggling ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini tabs, so I built a canvas for AI conversations

• Upvotes

I have been using AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for brainstorming, research and working through different ideas. They are great individually, but one thing has always frustrated me: everything happens inside a linear chat.

I start a conversation about something, get an interesting response, and suddenly have three different directions I want to explore. But if I keep asking questions in the same chat, things get messy. If I start new chats, I lose track of where those ideas came from.

Notice how the branches are scattered around?

And when I'm switching between different AI tools, it gets even harder to keep everything organized.

I started looking for ways to organize AI conversations visually and came across tools like Fuser and Flowith. I really liked the idea of working with multiple AI models on a canvas, but there was one thing that bothered me.

I was already paying for subscriptions to AI tools. I didn't want to pay for another platform just to use those models in a different interface. A lot of these tools have their own subscriptions, credit systems and usage limits. Even using your own API keys can mean paying separately for usage.

I wasn't looking for another AI subscription. I just wanted a better way to use the tools I already had.

I wanted something that worked a little more like the way I actually think, where I could explore different ideas, branch off in new directions and still see how everything connects.

So I decided to build Canvograph.

It's a Chrome extension that lets you work with AI conversations on a visual canvas instead of being limited to separate chat windows.

With Canvograph, you can:

  • Use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok on the same canvas without constantly jumping between different tabs.
  • Branch from any message to explore a different idea without losing your original conversation.
  • Organize conversations visually so you can see your different thought processes in one place.
  • Add notes, images and files alongside your conversations to keep relevant context together.
  • Keep everything related to a project on one canvas instead of spreading it across multiple chats.

The idea isn't to replace any of these AI tools. I just wanted a better way to work with them.

Sometimes a conversation leads to an entirely new idea, and I don't necessarily want to abandon the original direction to explore it. Having everything on a canvas makes that a lot easier.

I'm still improving Canvograph and I'll be honest - it's very early, it's messy, and I just spent the weekend fixing bugs lol.
I would genuinely love to hear what other people think, especially those who regularly use multiple AI tools.

You can check it out here: https://www.canvograph.com/

Please let me know if you are facing similar problems like me, or would atleast try to explore in this direction. I genuinely feel canvas LLM tools are very underrated

I made Milpaso: a cozy pixel-art farm game where your real steps water the crops

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey. I’ve been building this alone for a few months. It’s been on Google Play since early October, and yesterday I sent the 1.1 update to review on both Play and the App Store, so it felt like a good time to share it here.

It’s called Milpaso. Every step you walk during the day turns into water drops. You open the app, collect them, water your crops, harvest, and the harvest gives you coins to grow your land and furnish your little house. If you don’t walk one day your farm just sleeps. Nothing dies.

I made it because I wanted something that got me walking more without feeling like a fitness app nagging me. Sessions are like 2 or 3 minutes.

It plays fully offline and you don’t need an account (optional cloud save). No ads. The only purchase is a one-time Founder Pack and it’s cosmetic, like a hat for Capi (the capybara). If a free player and a paying player walk the same, they harvest the same.

I originally built it for RevenueCat’s Shipaton but store approval took longer than I expected and I missed the Sept 30 deadline by a couple days. That one hurt. Shipped it anyway.

The 1.1 is the big one for me. I redrew everything in a more detailed 16-bit style and added optional cloud save, and Capi now lives in your house with you.

What I’d really like feedback on:

- does “walk to water your farm” make you want to come back every day, or does it get old?

- are the first few minutes clear or do you get lost?

- anything in the art or UI that looks off?

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.milpaso.milpaso&pcampaignid=web_share

iOS should be out once Apple approves it.

Happy to answer anything about how it’s built !!

I made a macOS app to show the dock on every screen

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Apple gave the Mac one dock, which sucks if you're using multiple monitors... So I made ExtraDock and now I can have a dock on every screen, wherever I want it.

It looks and behaves like the default dock, except it's very, VERY customizable: widgets, custom app icons, effects, a Space-aware dock that only shows the apps in the space you're on, and you can even make the dock completely invisible.

This is a short demo of ExtraDock 5, built for macOS Tahoe & Golden Gate.

Feedback appreciated!

I made a journal where every day of your year becomes a shape, and the whole year moves

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

I made a small journal app for Android. Each night you answer two questions and pick how the day felt.

Every mood has its own shape and colour: Grateful, Restless, Proud, Tender, Tired, Hopeful, Heavy, Light, or one you name yourself. Over time those days fill a calendar of your year. A day that held more than one feeling takes turns between its moods, so the calendar actually moves, like in the clip.

You can tap any day and read what you wrote, and share your year as a card or a short video.

It's private: no account, and the journal stays on your phone. Free, with an optional Plus subscription for extra skies, palettes and deeper insights.

Bookkeepers: a missing file and the wrong file need different next steps.

Imagine a fictional client request with three documents:

- The bank statement hasn't been submitted.

- A receipt has been submitted and needs your review.

- Another statement covers the wrong month.

“Still incomplete” describes the request, but doesn't tell the client what to do—or the bookkeeper what to review.

Folio keeps each document's status and next action together:

Missing → the client needs to submit it.

Submitted → the accountant needs to review it.

Needs replacement → the client sees the reason and can submit another sample.

Accepted → the accountant has approved that item.

That replacement reason can be specific: “This is March. Please provide the April statement.” Selecting a replacement doesn't approve it; it goes back to Submitted for review.

Try the sample request from both perspectives, in the same browser. Ask for a replacement, open the client view and check whether the next step makes sense without another explanation.

https://folio-docs-1it.pages.dev/

I maintain Folio. This is a no-signup, browser-local demo for accounting and bookkeeping workflows, not a shared client portal. Use fictional details and non-sensitive sample files only. File contents aren't read or uploaded, no email is sent, and custom request links work only in the browser profile that created them.

Which of those four states would still make you stop and ask, “What do I do now?”

I built Bolo AI: your Android phone becomes a wireless mic that types on your PC

My wrists hurt from long typing days, so I built Bolo AI.

What it does:

\- Your phone becomes a wireless mic for the PC: speak, and the text appears at your PC cursor over Wi-Fi

\- AI clean-up adds punctuation and removes umm/ahh

\- Floating mic bubble to dictate into any Android app

\- Two-way clipboard sync between phone and PC

\- Offline on-device dictation, a limited free cloud trial, or your own OpenAI or Gemini key

\- Dictation in 28 languages including Hindi

On Google Play (search Bolo AI): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ashwar.bolo

I'm the solo developer. What would make you use dictation every day?

Building an investing app that only focuses on the stocks YOU care about

I’m building a small investing app called **WATCH**.

The main idea is pretty different from most finance apps.
Instead of opening the app and getting bombarded with the “Top 10 Market Stories,” WATCH starts with **your watchlist**.
For example, if your watchlist contains NVDA, AMD, IONQ, HIMS and SOUN, the app should be able to tell you:

• What happened today
• Which news actually matters
• Potential catalysts
• Important risks
• What you should research further

It filers out the 4,000 articles that the companies you follow release per week to only what actually moves the company.

Check out the website in my bio.

*Edit: the 4,000/week figure was wrong for these five. Real number from my watchlist is \~2,300/week across ten tickers. Thanks to the people who called it out*
