Looking for affordable shared WordPress hosting — Any recommendations?

Hi everyone!

I have a small website currently hosted on a shared hosting plan, but my renewal is coming up at around $170/year, which seems too expensive for my needs.

I'm considering switching to either NC EasyWP Starter or H Premium.

My website doesn't require much in terms of resources. I'm mainly looking for good uptime, decent performance, and affordable long-term pricing.

Has anyone used either of these hosting plans? I'd love to hear about your experiences, particularly with reliability, support, and renewal costs.

Would you choose one over the other, or is there another budget-friendly option worth considering?

Thanks!

WordPress and PHP security have changed. Do our hosting habits need to change with it?

As you may have heard, the past few months have reshaped website design and website hosting security.

In the past, we assumed that the mature software we use every day would be secure and that only through some level of neglect or incompetence would a website be compromised. Those days have passed.

In 2026, there is a high likelihood that the code used on your website “today” is, or will be, exploitable.

WordPress is built on PHP

With the latest advances in AI, what might have taken a hacker a year or more to find exploits and compromise systems has been whittled down to hours or days.

I’m not trying to scare anyone, but I am hoping that folks will come to appreciate that sites with no one manning the store are much more likely to be compromised or have their content deleted today.

I’ve been doing this since WordPress version 1.0, and I fully appreciate the situation we are in and the ramifications of what some are calling the “PHP Armageddon.”

While none of us can prevent hackers from exploiting current and future vulnerabilities in PHP and WordPress, we can take steps to help mitigate risk. In this respect, nothing has changed. Monitoring, managing updates, and backups remain the cornerstone of my security approach.

Your choices matter…

Due to AI innovations, what was acceptable in the past is no longer acceptable today. I would like to share these concerns so you can take action before they become costly emergencies.

1. PHP 5.6 and PHP 7.4

Websites using any version of PHP prior to version 8 are much more susceptible to compromise. Most web hosts no longer allow PHP 7.4 or earlier on their servers.

If you have a web host that allows these older versions of PHP, you cannot assume you are safe. Your web host is taking a risk by allowing these versions. While we can commend their willingness to help their clients by not shutting down websites running these versions of PHP, the writing is on the wall that this will not continue for long.

Any website running a PHP version older than 8 needs to be updated today, and all efforts should go into replacing code that still requires older versions of PHP.

2. Unmaintained WordPress and other PHP-based websites

Hosting unmaintained WordPress or other PHP-based content management system (CMS) websites is now a severe risk.

If you haven’t logged into a website for over a year, or if it’s no longer maintained by anyone, I strongly recommend either deleting its contents entirely or converting it to HTML only, removing PHP coding from the content as much as possible.

3. Login access

Restricting access to your PHP-based website remains one of the strongest choices you can make when securing your WordPress website. There are various ways to do this:

  • 2FA or two-step verification. I know we all hate this, but it’s one of the best ways to restrict access when multiple administrators are required. Wordfence includes this option for free as part of its feature list.
  • Restricting login by IP address. If you are a solo operator and your IP address never changes, a simple update to your website can restrict login access to you and only you. This is my preferred method, as it’s easy to set up and provides multiple benefits, including reducing your account’s bandwidth usage, possibly improving website load speed, and preventing other administrator accounts from being used to log in to your dashboard.

4. Separate hosting accounts

Not hosting multiple websites in the same shared account remains one of the most effective ways to reduce costs in the long term. While hosting multiple websites in a single shared account may seem more cost-effective at first, with AI agents roaming the Internet looking for exploits on websites day and night, a single exploit in a single WordPress installation could result in the complete deletion or manipulation of all content within the shared account in literal seconds.

Services like WHM/cPanel allow websites to be placed in separate accounts.

The future of website hosting and preparedness

When I sat down to write this, I never intended to scare anyone into action. But it’s become clear that we can no longer just hope the software that we count on for presenting our businesses and hobbies online is intrinsically safe and secure.

The actions we take can greatly mitigate the risk that AI bots and agents have created for online content management.

Some may say, “It’s over, dump everything and start over with a pre-WordPress style no-code website,” or convert everything to an unproven and expensive cloud-based solution. For most of us, that’s not practical or is simply cost-prohibitive.

I would argue that you can keep operating as you have for the past several years, but we all need to be more mindful of the implications of future technology and the choices we make for our websites and online presence going forward.

So I’m curious what others are seeing:

  • Has AI-driven scanning noticeably changed what’s hitting your sites or servers?
  • Is anyone still running PHP 7.x in production, and what’s holding the upgrade back?
  • Are you converting old or abandoned sites to static HTML, or just deleting them?
  • IP-restricted logins vs. 2FA: which do you actually use?
  • Is “keep WordPress, just be more careful” still a reasonable position, or is it time to move on?

VPS Recommendations for multiple WP sites

The links below are directly to their pricing pages for reference, not affiliate links of any kind.

Also why does mentioning a CERTAIN provider get you banned immediately?

Looking for input and recommendations on unmanaged VPS hosting providers, both good and bad. Context is starting out with hosting <10 WordPress sites using Bricks Builder, mainly light traffic brochure sites and maybe 1-2 ecommerce eventually. I'm trying to find that sweet spot of being cost effective but also large enough resources to grow into hosting multiple sites on one server (I know the ecommerce ones may need their own at some point). I'm trying to get away from the traditional shared hosting and having everyone buy their own Siteground, etc account and then wrestle with collaborator access/logins, etc and just have it all under one roof that I manage.

WPMU
Before you revolt at this, please read why… I originally was looking at WPMU, which does not have very good prices for the server specs, but I thought it offered great value with its "premium" subscription ($10/mo) that gives you access to their full suite of plugins, but more importantly white label and hosting reseller program with a built-in invoice/payment system that made it an attractive option.

For someone transitioning to starting their own 1-man studio, this all-in-one approach is enticing (and I haven't seen it anywhere else) despite not having great server specs for the monthly cost. I'm hesitant about the plugins though, I want to keep sites as lean as possible and unsure about the bloat of them. They do provide security/seo/forms, etc type plugins which you generally need regardless, even if it's from them someone else. Looking for feedback from anyone that has used that approach, if any.

XCloud
I think it's likely I will probably go with XCloud hosting though and either do their internal managed servers or connect a 3rd party VPS and have them manage it. Any experience with them? I see lots of positive comments online for using them to manage WP/backups/etc with a 3rd party VPS, but not much on using their OWN servers (unconfirmed but they might be rebranded Vultr?). They have one package listed below in the table that seems like a good value, but like most of the hosting agencies, they are not forth-coming with the exact specs of their components so you don't know for sure what you're actually getting assigned.

https://xcloud.host/pricing

Other VPS
If I connect a 3rd party VPS, the question is who.... there are so many options to choose from and I’m quite lost. I like the idea of being large enough to host several brochure sites and not worry about them going down if one gets a sudden spike and having room to grow, but not paying too much extra a month for nothing. I'm hoping to be in the $25-30/month range to start out with. That generally gets me x2 CPU cores, 4gb ram and ~100gb NVME storage 'ish it seems, but some have far better specs (which I am very suspicious of). They most be in North America (West Coast preferred) and able to install Ubuntu and be reliable for hosting paying clients sites.

Let me know!

Digital Ocean

Vultr

Four VPS deals last Black Friday, and I forgot three of them existed

Last month a $58 renewal hit my card for a box that had been sitting idle since February. I went through my email to see what else was out there and found one more that had renewed at about 3x the promo price. I only caught that one because I was scrolling a statement looking for something else.

So this year the plan is exactly one box, 2 GB, and its only job is running a subscription tracker (Wallos in Docker) that emails me before any VPS I own renews, itself included. Yes, I'm buying a server to remind me about servers. I'd rather pay $15 a year for that than lose another $58 by accident.

New rule: if the offer doesn't state the renewal price, I skip it. That probably costs me a few good deals, so tell me if it's too strict.

The weak spot is how I find offers. I check LowEndSpirit and, when I remember, VPSIUM (I'm connected to that one, so discount it), and that lazy refresh-the-thread habit is how I ended up with four boxes at once. Half my misses last year were stock gone while I was still typing into the signup form.

What else pushes to your phone for Black Friday instead of making you refresh a thread? Telegram channels, provider mailing lists, whatever. And has any of it ever pinged you before the stock was gone?

Running 30 small business WordPress sites on shared plans is killing me!!! Should I stay on one big VPS or keep splitting?

I’m a freelancer, where I build and host sites for local businesses which mainly are made up of these industries: dentists, a bakery, two gyms. I currently have thirty sites spread across three shared hosting accounts because I kept hitting inode and CPU limits.

Renewals are coming up, the total is around 90 dollars a month, plus my time whenever one of them throttles.

I’m thinking about one VPS with a panel (CloudPanel or Plesk?) and moving everything over. I'm also scared of becoming the sysadmin for 30 businesses.

Has anyone made this move? What size box for 30 low-traffic WordPress sites? like what did you do about email, keep it off the server?

First small e-commerce site (FastAPI + React + Stripe) recommendations for free or low-cost hosting?

Hi everyone

I'm planning to launch my first small online store for handmade products. I have a solid background in programming, but limited experience with production hosting and DevOps.

My initial idea for the stack:

  • Backend: FastAPI
  • Frontend: React
  • Payments: Stripe

The scale will be tiny at the start, so I'm aiming for costs as close to $0 as possible (or just a few bucks/month). Frontend is easy on Vercel/Netlify, but what do you recommend for the backend and database (Render, Fly.io, Railway, a cheap VPS, or Oracle Free Tier)?

Also, if you have experience with this would it be worth switching to a unified stack (like Next.js) to keep front and back in one place and simplify hosting?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help and tips

InMotion hasn’t patched VPS

Had to lock down site install on multiple sites due to PHP security breach early today. Sites at Nixi and Hostgator were patched after testing build dates, up within a half hour. The one site a client has at InMotion remains locked as their status shows no patch completed on VPS server. It’s been a day. Filed a ticket and no response, called support. Got a call back 4 1/2 hours later with no further info than not completed yet. They’re working on it. Really frustrating.

how to start for a serious project (by a unserious person)

Hello everyone, I'm a super beginner who needs some help. I vibecoded a menagement program for my father's business. Vibecoding was amazing to design it prefectly over his necessities, but now we have to make it run, and we need a sever where to put it to work and where to collect datas, so that we can use multiple devices in the same time and always be up to date. Now, what provider to choose? what should i be aware of? i wanted also to install a criptography system and maybe something else. I'm a total newbie, so be free to teach me even hard whatever u want. Thank you.

EDIT to answer some questions. the app is a management program to admin a lttle hotel, and o totally keep track of money. therefore it must be very reliable and safe. The used language is TypeScript. Now there isn't a real database, tha app is running on the browser. The plan is to base it on Pocketbase (for what claude told me). If there is a wiki or something like that to learn more about those matters, i would be very glad to read it!

Any Closte users think they're done for?

I have a ton of former clients who still remained on Closte for their web hosting, but the entirety of their sites and their own front facing website has been offline for a couple of days. Then I read that they were dissolved due to tax issues in the state of Wyoming. Any other Closte users think they're officially done for? I've had another host go offline a couple of months ago, but they reappeared and things have been hesitantly ok since then, but for my former clients on Closte, I'm thinking it may be a final goodbye with no notice.
