Hi everyone,
I'm finishing my BSc in Mechanical Engineering (aeronautics specialization) at RWTH Aachen in Germany and I'm applying to the MS in Aerospace Engineering for Fall 2027, ideally in the Aerospace Systems Design track / ASDL.
A bit about me: my bachelor's thesis is a multidisciplinary optimization of a wind turbine blade. It couples a BEM aerodynamics code with an Abaqus shell model, uses a two-level fidelity approach and optimizes geometry and composite layup together. That's basically what got me into MDAO and systems design. Longer term I'm interested in new propulsion concepts (hydrogen, hybrid-electric). My grades are solid but not outstanding, so research experience is my strongest point.
A few questions for anyone who's been through the program:
- Is the AE MS / ASDL worth it in your experience? How is the balance between coursework and actual research, and how hands-on are the lab projects?
- Funding as an MS student: how realistic is a GRA or GTA in ASDL for a master's student, especially an international one? Did you get funding at admission or only after contacting faculty or once you were on campus?
- Thesis vs. non-thesis: which option did you choose, and would you choose it again?
- Life as an international student in Atlanta: cost of living, housing near campus, anything you wish you had known before coming?
- Career: where did ASDL grads around you end up (industry, PhD, startups)?
Any honest experiences, good or bad, are really appreciated. Thanks a lot!
