Announcements Ask a Pro - WEEKLY - Monday Mon Oct 26, 2026 - No Stupid Questions! THIS IS WHERE YOU POST if you don't do this for a living! RULES + Career Questions?

r/editors is a community for professionals in post-production.

Every week, we use this thread for open discussion for anyone with questions about editing or post-production, **regardless of your profession or professional status.**

Again, If you're new here, know that this subreddit is targeted for professionals. Our mod team prunes the subreddit and posts novice level questions here.

If you're not sure what category you fall into? This is the thread you're looking for.

Key rules: Be excellent (and patient) with one another. No self-promotion. No piracy. The rest of the rules are found here.

If you don't work in this field, this is where your question should go

What sort of questions is fair game for this thread?

  • Is school worth it?
  • Career question?
  • Which editor *should you pay for?* (free tools? see r/videoediting)
  • Thinking about a side hustle?
  • What should I set my rates at? (SEE WIKI)
  • Graduating from school? and need getting started advice?

There's a wiki for this sub. Feel free to suggest pages it needs.

We have a sister subreddit r/videoediting. It's ideal if you're not making a living at this - but this thread is for everyone!

A must read if you're thinking of breaking in:

If you're looking to start this as a side hustle, right now the industry is rough.

It's super easy to get taken advantage of - owning plumber tools and fixing your own sink doens't make you a plumber. You 100% should work for someone else (ideally as an intern).

#No there is no magical mythical place where all the jobs are.

I built two links as you should really search the subreddit and learn about the industry before trying something like this.

A group of threads from the last year about how easily people are in over their heads.

Technical ScriptSync AI not working Database Offline Media Composer 2024.12.7

The folder /Users/Shared/AvidMediaComposer/Search by default is a different group than wheel. Which meant all of our Mobile accounts in Mac OS were having trouble scriptsyncing. This was Mac Studio Mac OS 15.4.1 with Media Composer 2024.12.7. We changed ownership of the folder Search and it resolved the Scriptsync issue.

Technical Should I upgrade my PC or switch to a Macbook Pro?

pc specs at the end

Okay, I'm currently working as a video editor for an agency (and do freelance on the side)... most of the footage they send me is in 5K resolution, the other clients I have send in full hd so thats all good.

To give a little context, I edit on this pc since 2020ish and it's served me really well over the years... with those projects, Premiere gets a little laggy but its usually during playback or 1second freeze opening a project and syncing AE comps.

For example, most recent video I had to roto the talent in every shot because the lighting in the scene was bad, so I had to use PR masking tool (which is surprisingly good btw) + inserts + texts + color correction, etc etc... so the playback is very laggy.
But other projects are usually cuts, zoom ins, stuff like that but theres a LOT of cameras, so that makes everything heavier too.

I use AE quite a lot depending on the project, sometimes I need to create a few animations so I think its worth mentioning that.

Currently I have around 3tb of files and already considering getting another 1tb because I need to keep most of the footage until the agency gives me the greenlight to delete it so, I know I'd probably have to rely on external storage... that's another thing.

my questions:

- For those of you who switch from pc to mac, did you notice a significant improvement in your workflow? like from the entire ecosystem? its better optimized on mac?

- My projects usually have like 4 sequences, one for all the raw footage trimmed down and the other three are for different ad variations V1A, V1B V1C... I'm not sure if that makes the project even heavier too...(?)

my pc specs:

- AMD Ryzen 9 3900X / NVIDIA RTX 3070 / 32GB RAM

my budget for all of this would be aprox. 2k to 2,5k usd? that varies since I'm from another country.

that said, I'm not necessarily UNHAPPY with my current setup... I'm just considering if thats holding back my workflow, upgrade to a better cpu, etc or just buy a macbook?

edit: typo

Business Question You think big companies want to replace you with artifical intelligence ?

no - it's EVERYONE - you think that Mr. Spydervenom is a big company ? He is a little guy, and he is one of millions of people that want to do this. And YOUR only answer to him is - "hey buddy, why don't you just employ a video professional to do it for you ?". He says it's for professional projects. But he can't do what YOU can - and he would rather be DEAD than employ you. Welcome to real life. It's not just big companies - it's EVERYONE.

Technical Avid multicam: Can I create a punched-in duplicate angle without making new media?

I’m editing a multicam comedy special in Media Composer. I’d like to have both the original framing and a punched-in version of the same camera available as separate angles, so I can switch between them while editing.

I duplicated the clip onto another track inside of the multicam group and added a resize effect, but the effect doesn’t carry over into the official timeline. In fact, the group doesn't even seem to be saving these changes despite clicking "update group".

Is there a way to create two separately framed angles of the same piece of footage that works in the multicam? I know I can export one of them with those changes baked in but I just wonder if there's a better way..

This is my first foray into Avid, my experience is with Premiere and this approach has worked for me there. Working in Windows 11, Media Composer 2026.8.

Technical How do you organize storage and backups as a solo editor with a NAS?

Hi, I’m a solo editor (Premiere Pro, maybe DaVinci Resolve soon). I edit native ProRes 4444 UHD, no proxies.

What I have:

  • A NAS (TrueNAS, 20 TB free, 10GbE to my MacBook)
  • 2 portable SSDs (Samsung T7, 2 TB each)
  • 8 TB hard drives for finished projects (archive)
  • A few small external hard drives

My plan:

  • Rushes and project file → on the NAS. I edit directly from it.
  • Cache and autosave → on my Mac (reading Puget System, it seems to be better like this)
  • Rushes are also copied to SSD1, then SSD2.
  • After each session → I copy the project to SSD 1, then SSD 2.
  • If I work outside → I take one SSD.
  • Finished projects → NAS + one 8 TB hard drive.

My questions:

  1. Is it safe to keep the project file on the NAS?
  2. Which app do you use to copy files safely (with verification)?
  3. What would you do differently?

Thanks!

Technical Freelance video editors, how do you organize your projects from start to finish?

I'm curious about how you manage your project folders, footage, audio, graphics, exports, and client notes.

Do you use a consistent system for every project, rely on templates, or organize things differently each time?

What's the most frustrating part of your current setup, if anything?

I'd love to hear what's actually working for you and what isn't.

Technical MacBook Pro M1 Max

Hey everyone!
I’m considering buying a used MacBook Pro with the M1 Max (10-core CPU, 24-core GPU), 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD for around €1,500.
I mainly use DaVinci Resolve Studio for filmmaking and work with a mix of 5.8K ProRes, ProRes RAW, and H.264 footage. My goal is to have a smooth editing and color grading workflow without constantly having to worry about performance limitations.
I also use GPU-intensive effects such as halation, film grain, temporal noise reduction, and sometimes Fusion. I’d ideally like to be able to use these tools comfortably without excessive lag or having to render everything just to preview my work in real time.
I’m aware that proxies, optimized media, and render caching can help, and I’m happy to use them when necessary. However, I’d prefer not to rely on them for every single effect or minor adjustment.
Thank in advance!

Technical Capturing Hi8 on OBS

I’m using a ClearClick Video2USB Lite Edition capture device but it’s displaying the footage as 1080x1920. Using OBS, the settings are at 720x576 but it’s still showing up stretched out as 1080. Any idea on what the issue might be?

Edit: the camera I’m capturing from is a Sony TRV108

Technical Is there a way to convert FL Studio projects to Premiere or Audition? Or is there a way to find the "in" point of a sample?

Sometimes I get audio projects from others made in FL Studio and I need to adapt them into Premiere. If the samples don't start at the beginning of the file, I have to manually extend them until the beginning or end to find the "in" point.

Is there a way to automatically convert the FL Studio project into a Premiere project or, more likely, an Audition project? If not, is there a keyboard shortcut or something I'm missing to show me the in point of a sample without having to extend it and reverse engineer it?

EDIT: This isn't the finished audio. Sometimes it has copyrighted sound effects and music that I need to replace. Also, as cuts change throughout the project, I need to adjust the timing of the audio on my own.

Did you know that /r/editors has a discord?

TL: DR - How do I get you (yes, you) involved?

Obligatory mention. Here's the link of the official Discord of r/editors with 1,000 members, including a number of professionals cutting films, tv shows and more.

It's for both professionals and aspiring professionals.

IT WILL NOT HELP YOU MAGICALLY GET A JOB. THERE IS NO MYTHICAL WEBSITE YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT either.

It requires verification (any of these will work: (Reddit/youtube/facebook/IG/Github/spotify/Steam/xbox).

Again: Discord Link here

Once you verify there are 15+ channels, including ones based on:

  • Type of work (color, sound, audio)
  • Software specific (Adobe, Apple, Avid, BMD)
  • Quality of life (Show off your work, scream room, live tech help)
  • and more.

What I'm trying to do? Get an engaged community outside of Reddit. I'm trying to figure out what works and what doesn't.

  • It could be a Friday Lunch
  • a virtual happy hour
  • a game night 2x a month
  • a virtual User Group event…

…but I'd like to know what you've seen that's engaging…and that gets you interacting with Discord

To me: Reddit is great for threaded conversations, Discord is great for live interactions.

(by the way, my biggest Discord tip is to mute a new server right away. That really helps notifications from becoming overwhelming.)

And yes, I'm happy to help anyone who feels that this is a new/strange domain or feels lost there. I go all the way back to IRC days.

Technical Does Topaz Sharpening Fix slightly out of focus shots?

Attached are a couple of screen grabs. I got footage for an edit and the A Cam of a couple of shots just missed focus. I have a BCam shot that is focused so the project isn't lost but I'm curious if any tools like Topaz or similar are worth purchasing for a month to fix these couple of clips. Adobe user, Premiere sharpening up to 150 looks like it's just processed a little but since the Background is properly out of focus it doesn't look terrible. It just looks like HD. Thoughts on best way to get the most out of these clips?

Other Office chair that is not an Aeron or Aeron-esque

Hi gang. I work from home in a small but nice office. My body is sore. I obviously need a chair that’s supportive ergonomically but it just cannot stand the look of those tall, futuristic-looking chairs that typically populate editing suites. Have you come across any nice looking low-profile chairs that aren’t made of mesh and plastic? My back thanks you in advance!

Technical Avid Multigroup: camera angle per track across a full day of TOD rushes?

In Resolve, Premiere and FCP you can set a camera angle per clip, so multicam keeps all of Cam A's clips on one angle across the day.

In Media Composer the MultiGroup Clips dialog only gives me sync options (Film TC, Inpoints, Outpoints, Source TC, Aux TC, Waveform) and a Multiple Groups checkbox. I can't see anywhere to choose a camera identifier.

Is it just reading the Camera column in the bin? Or Camroll, or Tape/Source Name? And if the column is empty, does it fall back to something?

Everything is time-of-day timecode, so sync itself shouldn't be the problem. Ideally I'd like each camera on its own track (all of Cam A on V1, Cam B on V2 and so on), synced across the whole day like a stacked sync sequence. Is multigroup the right tool for that, or is there a better way to build it in Avid?

If I'm stuck, my fallback is building a sync map sequence by hand, spotting every clip to timecode on its camera's track. That's slow over a full day though, so I'd rather avoid it if there's a quicker way.

Thanks

Bevor man merkt, was Artlist getan hat, ist es schon zu spät: Beschweren zwecklos, eine Rückerstattung erfolgt nicht, mit der Begründung, es sei schon länger als 14 Tage her...ganz üble Abzocke!

Technical Backup Drives

I am looking for advice on backup/archival drives and methods. I am running out of space and looking for drives that are trustworthy. I do not want to get another Lacie/Seagate after having my RAID drive fail on me. I edit off SSD's so the backup drive does not have to be fast.

Drives I have:

-16 TB 2Big Dock Raid (RAID 0)

-20 TB 2Big Dock Raid (RAID 0) - Failed

-WD Elements 20 TB

-Seagate 16 TB Expansion Desktop

-A bunch of 2-4 TB drives

-Sata Drive docking station

Are G-Drives any good?

Currently trying to decide between getting an 18 TB thunderbolt 3 G-drive or another WD element. I am open to suggestions.

Any recommendations on cloud storage?

Technical Suddenly getting lag in my BT headphones?

So this seemed to never really be a problem for me. I have those audiotechnica cans. They’ve worked great for years. I have a Mac Studio. Editing in premiere 2026. Was an issue in 2025 as well.

Can’t figure out how to properly diagnose the lag. It’s to the point where it’s screwing up my edits and flow. Any experience?

Other Vision editor has given me the timeline with no sound synced and no scratch track - am I right to be annoyed?

Looking for some insight from vision / sound editors. Genuinely wondering if me being annoyed at this is reasonable, or whether this is an expected part of doing post sound.

Context: this is an unpaid shoot, but we’re all industry professionals.

I did a shoot a few months back where I ran on location sound. I also agreed to do post sound. Both of these I do professionally, but in a TV broadcast capacity, so all audio is sent straight from the mixer to the camera and is always synced.

The vision editor was also the DOP and camera op, using his own camera.

He’s just completed the vision edit and colour grade, and given me the timeline to now do post sound on. I had agreed to do this as I thought it would be a quick cleaning up of my own audio which I’m confident in.

I opened up the exported copy and was confused when there was sound for the first 10 seconds, then complete silence over the dialogue. Like, people’s mouths moving and no noise. The sound comes back in for about 10 seconds on a longer monologue (one shot) and then drops out again. The whole film is about 8 minutes and is pretty much 100% dialogue.

I opened up the timeline and saw that there was only my mixer’s audio track under the 2 shots with sound, and the rest has absolutely no audio, including no scratch track.

I messaged the editor (/dop/camera op) to see why, and he told me that he accidentally deleted the audio that he’d synced, and that I’d need to sync it again with the cameras audio… sure.

I told him I didn’t have any camera audio to sync with as he’s deleted that from the timeline. Then I went to the original clips and realised that he never recorded audio onboard the camera in the first place.

I told him this, and he told me that “oh yes I forgot I’d didn’t record the onboard mic” (???).

He edited this in DaVinci, so I asked him if he has timeline backups and can get the timeline with the synced audio before he deleted it. I also said it would be difficult to sync the audio at this stage (as I’d need to drag each clip back to the clapper board, find my corresponding audio file, manually sync it by eye, and drag it back to its correct in-point).

He told me that he doesn’t have the timeline backup and that yes, “that was the process he had to do too”.

Honestly I’m doubting whether he ever even synced the tracks. I’m irritated because I feel that this was a job that needed to happen at the start when compiling the clips and the clapperboards are visible, especially as there’s no scratch track.

Thoughts? Is it unreasonable to be annoyed by this?

Technical Premiere Project not saving between Mac OS and Windows?

I have a Windows desktop and a 16" 2021 M1 Max MacBook Pro. I work in Premiere off of an ExFAT formatted portable SSD at all times so I can easily unplug my drive, throw it in my backpack, and work on my laptop while I travel.

This problem seems to happen often: I will save my work on my MacBook, but when I plug my SSD into my Windows PC again, the Premiere project acts as if it were days old. The Last Modified date will be in the past, and all my work since then will be gone. If I made one, my export will still be there, proving that I did something, and the Premiere auto-saves show that I was working on the project recently, but those are a bit behind my final manual save.

Thank goodness I copied my latest project to the MacBook internal storage this time before moving my drive. I was able to copy the project to my ExFAT formatted flash drive and version it next to my "old" project.

Does anybody know why this happens?

EDIT to avoid potential removal: 16" 2021 M1 Max MacBook Pro, Windows 11 PC, Premiere Pro 2025 and 2026.

Other I can’t tell if my boss is overstepping or if I’m too sensitive.

For context, I (23M) have been working in a small marketing agency for the past 5 years now as a video editor and a videographer. I joined as an intern and once my internship ended my boss offerred me a job (once he found out someone else at the company was leaving). So I joined them whilst studying a ‘media arts and production’ degree at a fairly large local uni.

When I started working there, I was quite shit and I learnt very quickly to leave my ego at the door. I was often told by my boss that my edits were shit, that they didn’t make any sense, that I was too slow, etc. And tbf, I completely agree with him, it was shit. He never trusted me enough to go on a shoot, it was only when the shoot was on a tight budget, only then I’d be put on. I’ve been micromanaged to Nth degree. Sometimes, he’d remote connect to my computer to watch me work when he’s not at the office.

Fast foward a couple of years and I’ve switched degrees (doing a civil engineering degree), developed my editing skills, and they sometimes put me on shoots (only if the budget is tight), I’m properly burnt out and I’m really fed up with my boss, but I can’t really tell if my annoyance is valid.

I feel like I’ve never done anything creative in this workplace. It’s often just editing what they want with no room for creativity. Even when there is an interesting project my boss would go out and film it himself with no consultation with the rest of the team. And because of that, every shoot feels the same, every edits feels the same, every client has the exact same look and concept.

He’d often tell me “Hey, we pay you guys really well compared to other marketing agencies”. I’m on a casual rate, I get paid ~$27 USD an hour. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but even if its decent pay, I don’t think that’s something you have to keep on reminding me about. I’m also the only editor in the office who knows how to use After Effects (and they have me do after effects work) and I get paid less than the other editor.

Something else that happens would be how he would always make a comment about my freelance/passion projects and I can’t tell if I’m just being a wuss over it. Every time I do something outside of work I’d get comments like, “why don’t you edit like you did for xyz client”, and then when I do he tells me to revert back to how we always did it. He’d also downplay the shit out of my passion projects by saying “I saw it, the grade was shit” or “I could do better”. He once told me to not use the orange and teal look on my ‘out-of-work’ projects because it looked too similar to their videos and style (I find it stupid because its my style of editing anyways, of course its going to have similarities). I can’t tell if they’re valid criticisms or if they’re trying to deflate me.

He also started outsourcing their work overseas, which he’d often tell me “I’m thinking of doing all of the edits overseas” i.e. you’ll be out of a job soon. There was one time where he was sitting right next to me and he was on a zoom call with an overseas editor and he referenced a edit that I did for a client, he said: “This is something we did for this client last year, as you can see…” he laughs “it looks quite shit, but of course you could do better”. Maybe my skin isn’t tough enough for this game.

Something else he’d also do is he’d promise to put me on an interesting shoot in the future and then just won’t put me on it when it came around. He’d say stuff like “I have a shoot with Amazon in 5 months, I’m going to put you on” and then when it would come around he’d go “Sorry man, we need you to edit at the office”. He’d pull this stunt off 3-4 times every year, it feels like a “carrot on a stick” situation.

There was one time where he was caught snooping around a co-workers private messages to see if they going to get poached by another company.

I’m on the tail end of my degree and I’ve put in my resignation months in advance (because I know they won’t be able to handle a 2 week notice). All I got was a ChatGPT response and then got told to stick to engineering lmao. He then tried to pull the “I have 2 documentaries coming up and I was going to put you as a DP”. I then explained to him how I know he’d never put me on and then he just ignored me and walked away.

The thing is, I still love being creative. I love nerding out about camera gear and different edits and colour grades. I love trying to figure out how someone did an edit or how a story was constructed. I love watching BTS clips of major productions (even though I know I’d never be able to be on one). I love watching Corridor Crew and their VFX breakdowns. I was known as the camera guy at school. I’ve been obsessed with this for so long in my life but now I have no interest in my professional work. I feel like I haven’t been creative in so long, it just feels like a boring corporate job with glitter poorly thrown at it.

The thing is, I have so many thoughts and I don’t know which one’s to listen to. Am I really a shit editor? Should I just leave the industry while I can? Is my skin isn’t thick enough for this industry (or life in general)? Am I just inexperienced? Is this a normal thing in the industry?

What do you guys think?

Business Question How to nail an internship at Company 3 + bigger post-production houses

Hi everyone! I’m currently finishing up my Senior year as a Film major with a focus on post-production.

A few months ago, I discovered that Company 3 offers summer internships and apprenticeship opportunities, and I would really love to be considered for one! However, I’m a little nervous that not attending a larger, well-known film school might put me at a disadvantage. I also don’t have any connections with recruiters, so I’m unsure how to navigate the application process or if they already have people in mind.

For anyone who has interned at a larger company or has experience with Company 3, what advice would you give to someone trying to stand out? Would it be helpful to connect with a recruiter before applications open in February, or should I focus on other ways to stand out?

I’d really appreciate any advice or insight you’re willing to share. Thank you! 😊
