Tldr: No. You're better off investing in hardware for local AI. The models can be impressive, but slow inference, poor instruction-following, unreliable infrastructure and restrictive usage limits make the price difficult to justify.

Hi, I've been a ChatGPT Plus subscriber since December 2025 and a Codex user since April. Last month, I upgraded to the $500 Pro plan so I could continue to work on a personal software project while juggling college.
Unfortunately, it's been disappointing.
GPT-6.1 Sol: Slow and Unreliable
Sol is reasonably capable, but painfully slow. After two weeks of long Codex Cloud runs, it had barely made substantive progress on my repository.
Despite detailed specifications, it repeatedly produced implementations that were completely different from what I'd asked for. For example, I had to tell it six times to stop using a particular rendering engine. Each time it claimed to have removed it, only for me to discover it was still being used. I also asked it several times to fork an open source project's code, explictly requiring it to be present within my repository, only to discover its source was missing.
Over 3 weeks in, I'm now essentially having to start again with Astra, having it go through the project and do the work I asked Sol to do. It's done way more quality work in one day than sol did in 3 weeks.
Astra: Great model but terrible limits
Astra is significantly more useful for complex development, but its usage limits are appalling. While Sol lasts for about 2-4 days running continuously, Astra only lasts around 7 or so hours. Using UltraFast for either 6.1 Sol or Astra results in your usage dropping to 0% remaining in about an hour.
For $500/month, that's ridiculous. Sol's (non-UltraFast) limits are reasonable, but Astra's limits make sustained development difficult.
On the top plan, which is over twice the price of Claude's top plan, I'm being forced to choose between a slow and weak midrange model that runs most of the week or a powerful frontier model that doesn't even last a day. Meanwhile, Claude's top model (which beats Astra) IS the midrange model.
Reliability and support
For six days, half my ChatGPT responses were replaced with "Response could not load."
Support's solution was to tell me to use GPT-6 Pro for every message, despite its slower speed and limits.
I've also experienced persistent message synchronisation issues, streaming errors, failed Codex runs and cloud storage limitations. Some of these issues were reported by me months ago when I was still on Plus and have not been fixed.
For $500/month, this level of reliability is unacceptable.
Ironically, I was going to try 6.1 terra and give my opinion but I currently can't use it due to those errors.
Competition from Local AI
I've been running Qwen 3.8 Flash Next locally on my RTX 5080, achieving, on average, 40 output tokens per second (measured against Q3 S, Q4 gives around 25, lower quants go into the 100s); that's faster than 6.1 Sol, which sits around 30. For reference, 3.8 Flash on max reasoning sits around the same inteligence level as 6 sol on medium reasoning, but it's free, faster and unlimited. Qwen 4 is expected soon.

I'd recommend sticking to a cheaper subscription and investing in local hardware if you use AI heavily.
At $500/month, I expected AI to save me time, not create more work fixing its mistakes.
