Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

NFL Team Bars of San Francisco (Mega Thread)

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.

I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.

Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood

I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.

NFC West

  • 49ers — Pretty much all over? Or is there handful that are solid?
  • Seahawks — Danny Coyle's -- Haight
  • Rams — zekis - nob hill
  • Cardinals — TBD

NFC North

  • Vikings — Bell Tower — Russian Hill
  • Packers — Local Tap - SOMA * Ha-Ra -- Tenderloin
  • Bears — The Bar on Dolores - 1600 Dolores @ 29th St * Monoghan’s in the Marina
  • Lions — Stoa (maybe not ideal, check comments)

NFC East

  • Eagles — Jake's Steaks on Buchanan * Kezar Pub - Cole Valley
  • Cowboys — TBD
  • Giants — Aces
  • Commanders — Redjack Saloon (maybe small)

NFC South

  • Saints — Tupelo - North Beach
  • Buccaneers — TBD
  • Falcons — TBD
  • Panthers — Greens Sports Bar (maybe) -- Russian Hill

AFC West

  • Raiders — TBD
  • Broncos — Nickie's in Lower Haight
  • Chiefs — Buzz Works on 10th in SOMA
  • Chargers — TBD

AFC North

  • Steelers — Shanghai Kelly’s - Polk -- Russian Hill * Rudi's (formerly Giordano Bros) on 16th (unreliable?)
  • Ravens — Standard Deviant (14th st) - Mission
  • Bengals — Bus Stop - Cow Hollow
  • Browns — R Bar - Polk

AFC East

  • Bills - North Star - North Beach
    • New bar/arcade at 4740 mission st -- Excelsior
  • Pats - Connecticut Yankee - Connecticut & 17th St - Potrero Hill
  • Dolphins — blue light - union st
  • Jets — The Wreck Room

AFC South

  • Texans — TBD
  • Colts — TBD
  • Jaguars — TBD
  • Titans — TBD

I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

Is it a bad idea to visit in November because of El Niño?

I badly need a mental health break and am considering visiting SF the weekend before Thanksgiving. The last time I visited SF was during Thanksgiving ‘16 so I know what a lovely time can be had in SF in November. But I worry that El Niño might make enjoying SF impossible or even dangerous in the next few weeks. What is your perspective as locals? I greatly appreciate your responses.

Top ice cream makers ? ( non franchise, local only)

Hi!
Kinda tired of salt and straw and noble, I’m looking for something different and unique to the city.
Any ice cream places or really great spots to check out?
(That are not franchises or Ghirardelli or similar)

SF Photowalk

Hey everyone! I've been in California for a few years, and photography is one of my interests. I'd love to connect with other creatives, exchange perspectives, and get some fresh inspiration.

Are there any photowalks or photography meetups happening around SF? Would love to join one! :)

Halloween

I’m 22M, new to SF. If anyone’s open to dressing up, and meeting up for a Halloween party, or just knows good Halloween parties to meet new people, let me know. I don’t mind tagging with an already established group either. I’m open to pretty much anything, and just tryna look for a fun time.

Infant daycare in the Outer Sunset area?

Looking for any insight that Outer Sunset parents can shed on good infant daycares! Alternatively, if you have ones I should avoid, I'll take that too. I'll take whatever I can get at this point :)

My initial hope was to be able to join and ask the Outer Sunset moms' group, but apparently they are full and not accepting new members :( I don't know any parents in the area and it's really hard to find a solid set of reviews for most local daycares, so I feel like I'm navigating this blindly.

Out in the avenues, are there computer accessory stores like Central Computers on Howard?

Hey SF friends – looking for a computer accessory store like Central Computers on howard, only out in the Sunset or Richmond.

Specifically after a store out there with a crazy amount of connecting cables of all kinds at all lengths.

Tryna avoid online ordering. I do know I can just drop by the Howard location.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

Good student pubs and bars?

Travelling from Quebec. Was wondering what are your favorite pubs and bars in the Bay Area/SF? I’m more interested in university pubs and bars. Also looking for outdoor activities.

Thanks a lot:)

Logistics for Kids Halloween

Does anyone know:

  1. What time the Belvedere Halloween party starts this year? It‘s usually around 5, but I was wondering if it’s earlier this year since Halloween is on a Saturday and/or because of the expected evening rain.

  2. If there will be a kids party in the Castro? A few years back they had an event on Castro north of Market with the Sisters reading stories in the afternoon. I can’t find anything about it this year.

Before and After Danceoween

It seems like Mission is a good place to be for a first Halloween in SF. However, I need to BART in and out and I would like to stay later than the last train, so will need something to do until the morning trains start.

Any recommendations for pres and afters? Want to make the most of it but hard to figure things out without knowing any locals yet

Early 20s, like partying, dancing, and meeting new people, queer-friendly events are a bonus

Hello!
I’m a Nuggets fan visiting your fine city for the first time staying in Nob Hill and I’m wondering what places you would recommend for a nice sports bar type experience to watch the game. Open to all suggestions. Thank you in advance!

Best affordable flower delivery that do actual vase arrangements for my mom's birthday?

My mom's birthday is coming up and i won't be able to make it back to celebrate in person this year so i want to send a bouquet that feels like a complete intentional gift rather than a quick afterthought. While looking for the best affordable flower delivery options i noticed a pretty big difference in presentation. Some places just mail boxed stems wrapped in plastic while others deliver them pre-arranged in ceramic pots or keepsake vases she can reuse. I saw Teleflora has options specifically arranged in keepsake containers through local neighborhood shops which caught my eye for a birthday. When you can't be there in person, what do you look for so the delivery feels special? Would love to hear how locals handle sending arrangements across the city.

Where to get Medallion signature guarantee?

I’m trying to move my old traditional 401k (Transamerica) with a former employer to my new employer’s trad401k (Schwab)

Wells Fargo doesn’t offer this service anymore and Fidelity Investments won’t do it unless it’s regarding an account held with them.

From my understanding I need to get it from a place I have an account with but I literally use fidelity/WF for everything besides my 401k’s.

Has anyone been in this predicament and can offer any solutions?

Avalon San Bruno vs South City Station Apartments

We are moving to SF in a few weeks. Unfortunately with a family and a bunch of stuffs we bring, we won't be able to visit and do apartment hunting.

Our budget is at most $4000 for 1 bed 1 bathroom apartment. After some online searching, we ended at either Avalon San Bruno or South City Station Apartments.

We're wondering if anyone has lived in either of these apartments or has any experience with them? We're particularly interested in hearing about safety, noise levels, management, and maintenance.

----

Edit: any other recommendation is also welcome!

Pickleball players?

Hey folks, where can I find pickleball communities or people to play pickleball around the downtown (pref) or any area?
I saw a few courts around and checking there as well. But do we have a concept of community play or open play where anyone can go and play? Or any communities around?

Hair stylist recommendations for long layers on STRAIGHT Asian hair

I know people post often asking for Asian hair stylists, sorry. Searching anywhere between SF and San Jose, literally any price range I will happily spend big money on this. I’ve searched through those recent posts and not found a stylist who a) has a functional website where I can see photos or b) has photos that match what I want.

I have long, pin straight, mixed Asian hair that does NOT curl. I need someone who understands how to trim layers on hair with no curl whatsoever. I have gotten cuts from stylists who end up giving me choppy tiers in my hair and try to disguise it by curling it. I wear my hair straight every day of my life and I just want some simple layers to add a little dimension and movement with NO styling other than blow drying. A lot of the salons I’ve seen recommended thus far either have no website at all, websites with broken links so I can’t tell what the updated hours are, or have photos where every haircut is curled so I can’t see what the actual cut looks like.

Please help me find my unicorn stylist!

edit: can I just say I LOVE how many people know EXACTY what I'm talking about! Thank you all so much!
