Affordable physical activities to learn as an adult in Philly?

I’m a young F looking to learn a new physical activity as a hobby, something like dance, karate, martial arts, or any other fun skill.

I’m a beginner and would love something affordable, beginner-friendly, and welcoming to adults.

Any recommendations for classes or places in Philadelphia? I’d especially appreciate options where I can learn a skill, stay active, and maybe meet people along the way. Thanks!

Are the “luxury” apartment complexes in Philly really that bad?

I'm looking for a 1BR apartment in Northern Liberties or Fishtown with a budget of up to $2,000/month.

I've noticed quite a few professionally managed apartment complexes advertising themselves as "luxury apartments," with amenities like pools, gyms, rooftop terraces, etc. However, almost every time I check the reviews, I come across complaints about roaches, rats, mold, package theft, security issues, or terrible management.

Are these problems really that common, or is it just that unhappy tenants are more likely to leave reviews? Are there any apartment complexes in the area you'd actually recommend?

Quiet Hotel Center City?

Hello! 👋

Traveling to Philly in March for event at Convention Center that I'd like to be able to walk to. I have some health issues so have to be really careful about my sleep. I'm researching center city hotels and they all seem to have multiple reviews about street noise. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a hotel near the CC that's perhaps on a side street? If not, I'm thinking might be better off in an Airbnb? Thank you!

Moving to Philly from Maryland for postdoc

I have never been to Philly before and I am starting a postdoc at Fox Chase Cancer Center in January 2027. I wanted to live in the city and I want to know what are my options for neighborhoods to look at that will be well connected to work but allow me to live the city life. I was imagining a 1 bed or studio situation but I also don't want to exceed my housing budget more than $1500 so I am also okay with a roommate in a 2bed/2bath if I get to live in Center City. I am also open to finding neighborhoods between Center City and Fox Chase that also have a lot of the city perks (walkable grocery store, few cafes, bars, restaurants and gym) even if that's away from Center City as long as I can easily commute to work and go into the city over the weekends. Also, I don't own a car and not planning on buying one immediately after moving. I only really want to buy it if it's necessary. Please help a girl out with suggestions <3

Chill bar for Halloween?

I know it’s Halloween on a Saturday night so it’ll be crazy regardless, but any recs on a more lowkey bar to go to preferably around Old City? Not too crowded, good music?

Fell behind on rent, can't find solid work, ready to leave

I moved to Philly in March and the company I worked for (large restaurant group, take a guess) decided for no reason not to help me transfer after making it sound like a done deal. That combined with injuring my ankle shortly after moving and unable to work on my feet for months has created a financial hole and I'm behind on rent for the first time in my life.

I've just started to love it here but a friend in the Midwest offered me to move in and financially recover so I can get back to school (I had to pause my career change because of this situation.) I work in hospitality and the job market here is trash, I've never had so much trouble landing a good job as a server and bartender the way I have here. I am finally working again but the shifts are unpredictable and the staff is miserable. So many people here just seem burned out and so negative and while I love the general vibe, the poverty and garbage everywhere is just depressing.

That being said, I love this city and am sad and defeated to go so soon but it's just not working. I'm 3 months behind.

With that background info (trying to keep this short lol) my landlord has lost patience with our payment arrangement and is going to have to apply for eviction diversion next week. Do I keep sending them money or just keep my cash to move and give them a move-out date? I've never been in this situation and not sure how it works.

Free Thanksgiving Food Across The City - Need NE locations

Every year I try to compile a list of places to get free Thanksgiving meals or turkey giveaways - please share links to flyers or posts.

Last year, a few people complained that I didn't have any NE locations - please share, so many people are losing their jobs - nobody should be hungry ESPECIALLY during the holidays.

Thank you in advance! My goal is to have at least 3 places in every part of the City.

I always feature Operation Turkey - they deliver across the City
But Philly PD's Operation Thanksgiving info has been hard to find in the last 2 years

Advice for Visiting - Halloween

Hi! Hope everyone’s doing amazing!

My girlfriend and I (23&24) are visiting for Halloween and are looking for advice on how to spend our weekend. We’re getting an airbnb around the science center and already have it on our list to visit Jim’s for a cheesesteak (sorry if it’s controversial idk) as well as Tinsel and probably Uptown beer garden. BUT I just stumbled across Frankenstein’s bar and their Halloween party. I saw the event is sold out but they also have regular putt putt around 5pm with drinks and stuff. Anyone done that before and have anything to say? Or even if anyone is looking to sell their tickets to the Halloween party?

The day after we want to visit Chinatown but besides that and the cheesesteak plans are open so any ideas are appreciated!!

Any other advice for the nightlife/transit/food/parking ect is welcome and thank you in advance!!

Fishtown vs rittenhouse

Hey guys so I just turned 30 this October and moving to Philly. I’m a single guy and want to be near events, bars social activities and stuff within walking distance or easy public transportation. I found two apartments ones in rittenhouse row and the other is 23 west both 1600 for a 1bed both 607 sqft the 23west has nicer a nicer layout i feel like. However for someone my age is it better to be in fishtown or in center city?

Time to burn

Good morning. I’m currently a few blocks from the Liberty Bell at an eye center. I’m my friends ride home. I have at least 5-6 hours to burn. I’m from the LBI area and have been to this city 3 times in my life. Where can I get some good coffee/sweet treats for this morning and a good lunch. I’m gonna start wandering on foot when the sun comes up. Thanks in advance.

9 N 9th St, Philadelphia, PA 19107

Would love to hear honest opinions and reviews on the apartment and the neighborhood

Also are there any grocery stores nearby?

Would be open to suggestions for other similar buildings in the neighborhood that offer short term leases! Thanks so much

Lost keys South Philly

Feels like a long shot, but if you found a set of keys (I think it would have been around 10th and Snyder or Jackson and Broad), please let me know! They’re attached to a canister of pepper spray.

Thank you!

Who wants to smoke and eat chinese food?

i am 25f and my boyfriend is 27m and i’ve met up with people from bumble bff but it’s been mostly unfruitful, and usually they drink more than smoke so now im taking it to reddit lol. bc it feels like no one smokes but then we go outside and we see others and we’re like ugh we wish we could go smoke with them instead of being on opposite sides of the street doing the same thing!

are there any couples who want to smoke and walk around chinatown with us??? and then be big backed and get like a snack to munch while we walk around, then go to a restaurant for “real” meal, and then something sweet to end the night?? or if no couples see this but there’s a girl around my age who is down hmuuu!! i don’t want to go to a nightclub man… i just want to smoke and eat and maybe do a craft… or we can all go catch an AMC movie after bc the come down is making us sleepy and that’s right by chinatown too…

BETTER YET if there are couples who wanna smoke and then do fall activities or just girlies who wanna- lmk about that too

or if you’re a dude looking for a chill dude friend im plugging my boyfriend lol he’s 27m like i said but don’t expect to be doing single man things like going to bars and hitting on women lmao

TIA<3

edit: this post is for anyone who is around the same age really (20-30s), i mention couples bc my bf and i are always hanging out / together. and i figured 1 person instead of a couple might feel like a third wheel… we def would be conscious of not making you feel like that lol but that was why i said couples. feel free to join us otherwise tho!!

or if you are “one” person who wants to join but not third wheel, i say just comment and maybe i can set a little group thing up even?? or just hang solo with me or my bf depending on your gender?? the world is our oysterrrr (sauce) (😝)

edit: omg so much interest !! i am elated. i’d actually love a big group stoner hang too 👀 if others are down

if you commented and i haven’t messaged you, pls just message me instead!!

Ccp students

So I enrolled for the 10a/12a program at ccp. My financial aid says it should have been send to the school on 10/7 and they disburse it after 10/20 once teachers submit their attendance. Has anyone received anything yet any notification or anything. I don’t want to keep bugging the financial aid office but I have to move in 5 days so just trying to get a better time frame honestly or seeing if maybe mine is delayed?

Emergency Passport Appt.

Has anyone recently done the emergency passport appointment downtown on 9th street? I have an early morning appointment TOMORROW for my daughter and our printer just broke, so I’m freaking out that I won’t have the following:
Printed confirmation of your appointment
Printed proof of international travel
Photocopy of IDs

Has anyone gotten the passport without those printed items? I have the confirmation number on my phone and I have the flight/itinerary information on my phone as well. And hardcopies of all the right IDs. The passport form I already have printed.

Any help or experience would be really really appreciated.

Planning a trip

Hey everybody
I’m a Texas girl looking to plan a trip to Philly for next May. One important thing about me is that I have a physical disability and will be bringing my wheelchair and crutches. I was wondering if you guys could recommend some great accessible eating spots and attractions that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Another cool thing about me is I’m a huge history nerd so historical sites are welcome too!! Thank you guys so much for your help :)
