I READ THE RULES What are some cat adoption centers in Chicago?

Hi! I just moved to Chicago and I’m looking to adopt a cat (or cats). I was on Facebook and came across the Critical Animal Care Foundation and submitted an application for a pair of absolutely adorable kittens. I have only lived at home up until this point and don’t have any personal vet references, and I’m currently renting. The kitties that I applied for were quite obviously popular, and I’m sort of preparing myself for rejection due to their high demand and my lack of solo-pet ownership. What are some other adoption centers or non-profits that I should be looking into? I live near the cat cade and have been planning to go, but the night before I had a reservation, someone broke the windows (what is wrong with people), so my visit has been delayed. I’ve always had cats in my home and it feels empty without one!

I READ THE RULES (Potentially) odd traffic phenomenon in North Park- anybody ever seen this?

Witnessed something odd while driving this afternoon, 13:40. I was driving west on Foster, stopped behind two cars at the Pulaski light. East-west light turns green, and after a second or twos' hesitation the first car in line proceeds through the intersection. A car driving north on Pulaski drives into the intersection, almost crashing into the first car. Not that big of a deal, there are idiots who drive through red lights all the time.

But I saw the Pulaski-north driver look up at his traffic light, get mad and start honking at the Foster driver as if he were in the wrong. Pulaski-North continues through the intersection and is followed by 3 or 4 more cars entering the intersection driving North on Pulaski... it was as if both sets of lights were green.

Now this is just speculation on my part, as I could only see the green light for driving west on Foster, but the way each driver handled the situation really made it seem that both sides had a green light. I have 20 years of driving experience, and I have never witnessed anything quite like this. I'm aware that traffic signals usually have multiple safeguards in place to prevent something like this from happening, but I have no other explanation. There was even a pedestrian in the crosswalk who was looking at the traffic lights with a look of confusion on his face.

Anybody ever see or hear of anything similar?

I READ THE RULES Should I move back to Chicago from Florida?

Debating on moving back home. For context, 38 male, and was born and raised in the west burbs, and I lived in wrigley, LP, Gold Coast from 2013-2019 before taking a job opportunity with my Chicago company in South Florida. It was supposed to a 2 year thing, but 2020 hit after I left the city, and I just couldn’t move back during those times. Ended up in a relationship in FL as well.

Now that I’m 4 months out of my relationship with whom I thought I’d start a family with. I’m wondering what now?

7 years in South Florida. I went back to Chicago in September for 5 days alone to see friends, take in the city with just myself. It felt like a better city than pre-2020.

Had anyone moved back from Florida?

I READ THE RULES Looking for the name of a Chicago parade that may or may not still be around?

ANSWERED: Not sure if it’s still around. Usually small, in a neighborhood, I think north/northwest side. Not Biliken, not Von Steuben, none of the major holidays or even minor ones.

I READ THE RULES Jobs that are 9-5 but require no degree?

Hello!

My sister is looking for a job that is an office type job, but something that doesn’t require a technical degree. She’s been having trouble finding something like this that’s not retail where she works odd hours and shifts and wants something that she can actually grow into, learn and develop skills. Does anyone know of any available jobs like that right now?

I READ THE RULES How Do I Make Friends In Chicago?

I know it's a dumb question, but it feels impossible.

I've tried sports leagues, MeetUp groups, TimeLeft, but haven't found a friend.

I will say I can be seen as quiet, but still.

People say to find a hobby and better yourself and that's how you make friends, but it still seems so hard.

How did you guys make friends, was it as hard for you?

I READ THE RULES What’re garden units like? Has anyone lived in one?

I just toured a rental garden unit in Hyde Park and it seems nice and spacious but I’ve heard stories about flooding and bugs. Are garden units a no go or can they be ok? For what it’s worth, it’s not that deep in the ground (maybe 3ft). Plz lmk if this is a bad idea or not. Also, side note, anyone rent from Marian Realty? If so, were they a good company?

I READ THE RULES Any South African communities in or around Chicago?

My partner is South African/Afrikaner and can’t return home until his education is done. Home sickness and lack of community feelings are understandably starting to set in.

I’m hoping someone can direct me to maybe a business with South African products, bars or taverns that play rugby/cricket, or even if there’s a group meet-up that happens every so often.

We are located in Joliet but have no issues with traveling out some, especially if it means finding people who love Braai’s.

I appreciate any suggestions.

I READ THE RULES Recommendations for thyroid surgeons and endocrinologists in Chicago?

Hi everyone!

Looking for recommendations for experienced thyroid surgeons and endocrinologists in the Chicago area, particularly those specializing in thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, and complex thyroid cases. I’m especially interested in high-volume thyroid surgeons and would love to hear from anyone who has sought a second opinion or undergone thyroid surgery.

If you’ve had a positive experience with a particular doctor or hospital, I’d appreciate hearing who you’d recommend and why. Open to recommendations outside Chicago as well.

Thanks!

I READ THE RULES First time pilates in Chicago - where to go?

Hi all! I am interested in starting to go to pilates, but I have absolutely zero experience or knowledge. I live in Uptown, but I have a car if need be. I'd prefer to keep it on the cheaper side price wise, and a local place would be great but I'm not necessarily opposed to a chain. Thanks!! :)
