Survey Results Megathread - Resource effectiveness, average scores, and more!

A few years ago we ran surveys of this subreddit to gather data on your experiences for a variety of things. Which resources are the most effective? How much time outside of class do you spend? Did your score reflect your grade in class?

These surveys were ran a couple times and, along with a few other polls, turned into results posts for 24 different AP courses. Unfortunately, the posts were deleted some time back. I still have the data though and am now recompiling them.

Here's the schedule I'm going to try and get these posted on

  • APUSH link
  • Biology
  • Calc AB
  • Calc BC
  • Chemistry
  • CSA
  • CSP
  • Gov
  • Lang
  • Lit
  • Psych
  • Stats
  • World
  • Physics 1
  • APES
  • HUG
  • Macro - Thursday 3/19 morning
  • Micro - Thursday 3/19 morning
  • Phys C Mech - Thursday 3/20 afternoon
  • Phys C E&M - Thursday 3/20 afternoon
  • Spanish Lang - Friday 3/21 morning
  • Euro - Friday 3/21 morning
  • Seminar - Friday 3/21 afternoon
  • Research - Friday 3/21 afternoon

It is important to note that this is self-reported data from a community of high scorers, after receiving their score. It does not reflect the general population, and people who did well on the exams were also more likely to report their experience. Some results, like average scores, should not be taken at face value. Other results like resource effectiveness, are still valuable compared to one another.

Once I have finished posting each of the courses, I will do a comparisons and conclusions post to rank courses by difficulty, expectation, etc.

Also note that we are planning to run these surveys again this year for more data after score release.

Good luck in your classes everyone!

Other Opinion: Before going full on into a major take an AP or DE class related to that major

I am seeing a troubling trend where people change their minds about a major just based on a YouTube video they watch. I know a guy who wanted to be a meteorologist and was planning to take a Dual Enrollment Meteorology course, but after watching one cool video on chemicals or something and now wants to be a dual major in electrical engineering and chemistry.

While I applaud YouTube and STEM related youtubers for promoting interest in STEM, I will also acknowledge that YouTube videos can't exactly show you the Mathematics and complexity of the major/career path. YouTube is designed to get views if you show a board of equations you are of course going to get less views than if you show the end product instead, but you know what does and proves that you really can do the subject? The actual college courses and their equivalents.

This applies to the Humanities too, if you think being a lawyer is easy because you watch one law and order episode, you are in for a rude awakening. Take AP US Government or AP English Literature or some DE Intro to law course to get a sense of the major and the amount of work in it.

I know APs and DEs aren't going to exactly match the coursework of your intended major, but it is good to get a sense of it before making a full commitment. I will also warn against taking lower level courses that sound close to your major, but haven't been proven to be rigorous like a lower than Honors course such as Materials Science and Anatomy, take them if they sound fun but don't expect them to prepare you much for majors.

It is better to explore intended majors now in high school using these options when everything is still cheap and DE and AP will cost you at most $100, than switch in college where it will cost $1000 at least for each class.

English Lit independent reading recommendations

I'm not a huge reader and only taking the class for college credits. I'm just looking for a book that's relatively short and interesting, preferably not fantasy or sci-fi.

Question At what point is student kid just too dumb to do well in AP courses

As much as this sub likes to say it’s all about having good study habits, most students cannot get good As in AP classes. Plenty of students who go to every class, answer questions every class, go to tutoring, do all the practice problems in the textbook, and so on still do poorly. It’s why the number of students with strong academic credentials to get into public flagships and other selective universities are so rare. Most just don’t have the intelligence for it

Physics 1 Bombed Physics 1 Exam (need help)

I got a 20% on my first AP Physics 1 exam. How can I improve?

As the title suggests, I did poorly on my first exam, scoring just 4/21 (19%) on what is supposedly the easiest unit: kinematics. I got 2/14 on the multiple-choice section and 2/7 on the free-response question, and I'm extremely disappointed in my performance (to say the least).

What makes this especially frustrating is that I average around 70% on practice problem sets. While that isn't an outstanding score, it's significantly better than my exam result, and I don't understand where the disconnect is.

I don't want to drop the class, nor is dropping it an option, so I need to figure out how to improve before the next exam. For those who have taken AP Physics 1 or struggled with the course initially, what strategies helped you improve? How should I approach studying, practicing multiple-choice questions, and preparing for FRQs?

Comp Gov AP COMP GOV HELP

Hi all,

I'm currently a sophomore at a T10 high school in NYC. I'm enrolled in AP Seminar and AP World, but I decided to take the AP Comparative Government exam on my own. It would be helpful if anyone could comment on the test's difficulty, provide any resources, or share their experience. This is also my first year taking any AP exams, so it's fairly new to me, but I'm interested in law and politics. I took my US History Regents (an 11th-grade exam) in 8th grade and got a 90, so I was basing my ability to succeed in the exam on that.

APUSH Am I crazy for thinking APUSH is harder than AP Chem?

I don’t know whether I’m in the minority, considering the poll was on YouTube, but less than 10% or so said that APUSH was the harder choice of the 4 options presented, and well over 50% said AP Chem was the hardest.

Perhaps it’s the way I think? I’ve always found that the chemistry conceptually made more sense than history. History is hard… it’s a massive story that you need to memorize, one event after the other.

Am I crazy here?
P.S.: why do people recommend Heimler so much? I know he’s a YouTuber who makes videos on the time periods, but is watching the videos really a great study habit? Seems mostly like an overview.

Calc BC Ap Exam Selfstudy help

I'm currently a senior at HS and I asked my ap exam coordinator if I could self study AP Calc BC and AP physics E&M.

I know these classes are hard but I took honors physics the year before I basically self taught myself everything using just the homework and flippin physics dude so I think I could do it again.

My coordinator told me to ask for my counselor's approval and she said no because my math level is too low right now (I'm taking precalc H). They also asked why I didnt take the class last year...

Is there any way to convince them to let me take these exams? I feel like I'm just embarassing myself but I really want these credits to have a stronger foundation when I go into college for engineering

CSA Ap Csa help! Looking for tutor short notice

I need to learn how to write loops efficiently and tracing.
I have a quiz on Wednesday that’s mainly about writing loops and then Friday is my test which consists of both.
I have failed my past 2 tests and I know it’s on me because I haven’t been practicing but it gets so overwhelming for me. We code on CodeHs and CodingBat, where we have most quizzes on CodingBat. Any tips?

Calc BC Finding Resources to teach a class (As a student)

Recently our teacher for AP Calculus abandoned our class. Because of this, we should be expecting to have a teacher by February.

To me this is unacceptable.

As such I am taking it upon myself to study and teach the class. I understand this is insane, but as long as I have the classroom to myself, I believe I can unofficially teach my friends.

If anyone knows of any worksheets that I can use or study guides to break it down, please let me know!

We were left in unit 2, and I want to bring our class to unit 5 by December.

I was one of the best students in the class, so I hope I can understand the material quick enough to teach it and reinforce it to myself.
