Discussion: suppressing valuable discussion vs allowing slander and doxxing

This is the sub mod, reaching out for discussion on the influx of posts (and reports) regarding the recent posts about predatory behavior in the salsa scene. TLDR: In this post, I will talk a little on the current sub policy on moderation, discuss a bit of context on what I am required to remove from the sub, and then add my thoughts on path forward. The last will be up for some discussion here, as we try to figure out what we as an online salsa community want to be.

  1. Current mod policy: my current mod policy is to let upvotes and downvotes speak. Things are often reported that don't really break sub rules or are bad text posts by people who are annoying to many of you in the sub. I do not remove these posts. One of the reasons I do not is that, despite being downvoted into the negatives, many of these posts tend to foster a healthy amount of discussion and engagement in the comments that are relevant to the dance scene. Another type of oft-reported post are the ones that link to a site or blog or whatever. The current rule is not to spam them and not to sell anything. The reason is that there are things that you may not be interested in that others may find useful. Again, upvotes/downvotes do a lot of heavy lifting. In the cases that the line crosses from occasional self promotion to spam, I have reached out to those individuals via DM to help clarify the policy, and if required, temp ban them. My point is, generally I do not like using mod powers to shape the subreddit to be what I want, but rather what the community wants to see.

  2. Which brings me to my next point - things I must remove. According to reddit content policy rule 3 (https://www.redditinc.com/policies/content-policy) I am supposed to remove anything that reveals personal information or uses such to instigate harassment. The kicker: public figures may be an exception to this rule. And a public figure is "a person who has achieved fame, prominence or notoriety within a society, whether through achievement, luck, action, or in some cases through no purposeful action of their own."

As you can see, the whole thing is kind of murky, especially as it applies to the recent discussions on predatory behavior. As someone who takes part in another sport that is rife with these types of scandals (against children on top of that), I have personally seen that shining light into these corners of darkness has a huge effect. So I am not keen to suppress legitimate discussions about this topic in our community.

On the other hand, reddit is full of examples of failed witch hunts and anonymous bullying. And some of the discussions, veiled or otherwise, have been naming individuals who may not even be on this site to defend themselves. I'm not keen to allow mudslinging (especially without proof) in a subreddit that is meant to celebrate dancing. I can imagine a scenario in which a instructor or school uses the current discussions to cast unfounded doubt or outright accusations against an innocent rival.

So how to walk the line between useful discussion and baseless name calling?

  1. Thoughts on path forward - I propose that we continue to allow upvotes and downvotes dictate what goes on the page relative to these discussions, with a couple of tweaks. Naming regions or cities in comments/posts is okay. Talking about your experiences about unnamed people is okay. Opening discussions on predatory behavior, what that behavior looks like from start to finish, and providing support in the wake of aftermath--all okay. What is not okay is accusing people by name in the top level posts or in comments unless you have a link to an objective article/police report/etc. that backs up the claim. Instead, I propose that you leave an invite at the end of your post/comment for any one to DM you if they would like to discuss details/names in private. Those that would benefit from knowing will still have the opportunity to find out what/who they should be careful of, without violating any reddit policies. It would also allow the two users to have a more frank conversation, and at the end of the day it will be for the requester to determine the credibility of the poster.

Is this a perfect solution? Of course not. But I've been a mod here for 12 years and this is the first time something like this has happened, so I'm happy to entertain other suggestions.

Lastly - I consider the Yamulee fight video to be an example the original mod policy. The post is relevant to the salsa community, and it doesn't violate any rules in and of itself. Yes--the juxtaposition of the OP's 2 only posts implies bias/agenda, but the upvotes/downvotes very clearly pushed the post to negative votes and floated context on the altercation to the very first comment.

That said, I am happy to discuss how to treat videos like this in the future. There is a very real argument that it is not relevant to salsa music or dancing and that it should be removed.

Thanks for reading my novel.

Just a little video my friend took, I’m center dancing with the older gentlemen. I didn’t get to do the lesson, but I made it in time for the social. Officially, I’ve never taken social salsa lessons. I know some salsa footwork from a solo class on shines that I took for 1.5 years, and I’m primarily a swing dancer (Lindy, balboa) so I combined what I know of following from that. I want to get into partnered/connected salsa classes eventually though. Also, I don’t think I would wear this skirt again for salsa in particular.

Just sharing because I had fun and I want to keep going!

Cross body lead push on "1" (instead of "5")

Hi! I've been watching a lot of salsa social videos, and I've been seeing a common move where, after shines or after letting go of the follow, the lead will take her back by doing the push part of a cross body lead on "1" (instead of on the typical "5"). I'm very curious about this.

For instance, see 1:00-1:04 of Emily and Oliver's iconic dance (there are many more instances throughout). There's a brief let-go, and then on "1", Oliver takes Emily back with the cross body lead push — which, as a beginner, I'm used to only doing on "5" (after I've already made the opening for the follow).

Is there a name for this move? How come it's so common? Is this a variation of the cross body lead?

Thank you so much!

Asked If you know other dance styles

How often does it happen that you are asked after a dance if you know other dance styles ? Is that usually a compliment or a complaint that other dance styles screw up you salsa ?

For me so follows asked If I know Ballet or Tango and once Ballroom ? Know neither of them actually.

What am I missing? Musicality? Body movements?

Hi everyone. I've been dancing salsa on1 for almost two years (the last 4 months I’ve been focusing on2) as a leader and I really enjoy it. I dance about 8-10 hours a week (classes plus social dancing), and I take the "advanced" classes at my school, though I'm still far from being an advanced dancer.

Followers seem to like dancing with me and I get compliments. But when I watch videos of myself, it doesn't look nice or natural. Then I watch other dancers and it looks effortless.

My classes focus almost entirely on new steps and complicated turns. Musicality and clean movement are barely covered. I don't even know what to call the thing I'm missing. Is it musicality? Body movement? Something else

  1. What is that "natural" quality actually called, and what builds it?
  2. I've heard musicality improves by listening to salsa. I listen every day, but I don't understand how that translates to dancing. Do I need to actively listen to specific parts of the song (instruments, breaks, phrases)? How?
  3. Would private lessons be worth it? What should I ask the instructor to focus on?
  4. Anything else you did that took you from "knows the moves" to "looks smooth and natural"?

Here's is a band, what makes a good live salsa band, do they need to have a clave?

See here this live band, this is a place where Prince himself used to frequent called mama juanas. The upcharge $25 is the highest in any salsa weekend in LA, you can check how the band goes in their posts, a lot of people say they are lacking a lot of things. Let alone dancing just cumbia while singing and playing salsa all night, what makes a salsa live band a good salsa live band?

I think the premium charge they do can be worth depending on band, thoughts?

People who social dance but don’t go to classes: why?

Basically the title. I feel like a lot of the social dancers in my community would benefit a ton from the local classes. But they don’t go. I try to ask them and sometimes it’s a matter of cost and distance and sometimes it’s the skill level. Although for many of them, thats the level they need even if they don’t think so. Anyway I wanted to ask other people and get their perspectives.

If you social dance a lot but you don’t go to local classes, why not? Why arent the classes interesting to you? Do you practice on your own instead? Or do private lessons? I get that sometimes the classes simply aren’t advanced enough and people don’t want to keep paying for the same thing over and over. I personally find value in practicing in classes even if they aren’t quite at my level. It helps me really fine tune my fundamentals. I help teach some of the local classes and I am able to do that and just practice the basics with new dancers who are learning. When I can, I focus on private lessons for myself because that’s the best way for me to learn new combos and really push myself. But I want to understand other perspectives. Im a pretty active social dancer, I am social dancing once or twice a week.

What makes you, as a social dancer, avoid classes or lessons? What would need to happen in the group classes for you to be interested in them?

Iā€˜ve been learning to dance since december, at the beginning more bachata, but since march only salsa (but thats bc i really really donā€˜t like these bachata sensual moves and in germany there are really only a few bachata dominicana partys)

sooo iā€˜m able to follow a couple of styles (cubana, on1, on2, caleƱa and son (currently focusing on contratiempo and rumba)) and in this video this is salsa cubana (on1). i know that my hand movement is a bit off, but i fixed this in the last two weeks a did a few styling classes bc there are fundamentals that were missing since the beginningšŸ˜…šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚. i also noticed that my way how i dance is changing from every different style i dance. for example, my salsa on1 is like really strict and full of body control and stability. iā€˜m feeling like a really strict teacher in this momentsšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ my salsa cubana is like really playful and i like to donā€˜t be on full body tension as you can see. i love to do shines, currently learning on it as well and iā€˜m really thinking that the time has come that i have to take a privat lesson and a teacher who is fixing like every part of my body. i donā€˜t know what to do with the whole dancing stuff, bc i love it too much to go only on socials and festivals. even the ā€šnormalā€˜ socials donā€˜t make thaaat fun anymore bc iā€˜m on a step rn where i donā€˜t want to ā€šjust danceā€˜ anymore. i want to learn something new and crazy stuff every time every day at any time. i also listen to salsa the whooole day to learn like that musicality expection for the songs.

greetings and a lots of love for my other salseras and salserosšŸ’•šŸ’•

New school, different way of teaching

Hi everybody,

I'm in my 3rd year of Cuban salsa, as a leader. This year I changed school, and the way of teaching is very different from last year.

Last year's teacher, a Cuban guy, taught us all the basic moves (dile que no, setenta, setenta y cinco, ochenta, pƔsala, vacƭlala, different enchufla variations, etc.). He taught us one new move at a time and spent 2-3 weeks on each, making sure we were doing it correctly. He also taught us some pasitos, body isolation and that kind of stuff. Then, when I went to socials, I tried to use all the moves, deciding what to do on the spot and dancing very freely.

This year's teacher, a woman, has a very different way of teaching. She shows a very long sequence of basic moves, which we are supposed to learn. In the last 3 weeks she has shown 3 different sequences, each more than a minute long. We are supposed to learn the sequences like a choreography.

I have some difficulty memorizing such long sequences.

Has anybody had this kind of experience?

Salsa Festivals/Marathons Europe 2027

Hi, I am slowly planning the festivals for next year and I am looking for some inspiration and recommendation (linear on 2).

So far I've done Berlin Salsa Congress (not really hooked to repeat that one), Back 2 Mambo Prague, Magic in Ljubljana, Salsa Addicted Timisoara (definitely rebooking that one), Bucharest (possibly rebooking as well) and Salsa Rave.

I prefer cozier atmosphere rather than flashy festivals and maybe something on less pricey range...Any suggestions or good experience from recent years ?

So far considering Live to Mambo in Budapest (if yes, which weekend is worthy ?), Vivaz, Hamburg Salsa Weekend and Transilvania. Anything else worth going (except Rovinj and the festivals mentioned above) ?

Is Cuban Salsa enough for having a good time in Medellin?

Hi, I moved to NY recently and have a trip planned to Medellin in December.

I didn't find any specific posts like this, and I'm also new to Salsa universe and all variations.

I'm planning to learn on2 next year, since I'm living in New York, obviously. I had 4 classes a couple of months ago and found it... unnatural. I'm attending now Cuban Salsa and it was MUCH more intuitive for me.

The reason I started doing cuban salsa was because it was On1. And since I have dancing background with Forró which is also kinda circular (but can have linear aspects) I've been able to pick it up very easily.

Would Cuban Salsa be enough for Medellin? I'm not interested in Cali right now, the only option I see would be LA-style. But I feel that knowing Cuban + on2 New York style would give me more freedom on different dancing styles.

What places do you recommend, specially in Laureles?

EDIT: I'm a Lead

What resources did you use as a follow when starting?

So I recently started picking up On2 and while I can follow as a beginner and have drilled in my basics, I want to start adding sabor/footwork/musicality to my dancing. My area has limited classes offered and as much as I'd love to take classes every day, I can't.

Now I'm wondering what/who are reliable online teachers that offer videos on youtube/IG for drills/techniques that I can look into on my non class days. I've seen a lot just by searching but honestly, as a beginner, I still cant tell which ones are correct and good for my learning journey.

TIA!

Different ways to do the fundamental basic

I've had different instructors explain the basic in different styles.

First way: You step a foot in front by pulling the opposite weight back on 1. On 1a, you shift your weight and twist your hips again, unlocking the next foot to move. I've heard this technique also applies to ballroom. With this basic, the action is more derived from the hips to move the legs.

I call this dancing on the 1a

Second way: The weightshift and the step occur at the same time. The twist of the hips happens the same time as the weight shift. The action here comes from the lower abdomen which initiates movement.

This is what I am calling dancing on the 1

I know the Berardi siblings have their own style of constructing the basic, I've taken a couple classes and his movement seem applicable to both forms of basic.

Have you had the basic explained to you in a different way?

Puerto Rico is the right place for jamming Salsa?

Hey :)
I am a jazz pianist going to travel south and Central America in few months.
I very like playing salsa and looking forward to play with locals, does Puerto Rico is the right place for that? Or am I just dreaming.
I understand that Cali (Colombia) also have strong connection to salsa (of course every country’s salsa genre is slightly different)
Thanks šŸ™Œ

Salsa practice accountability buddy??

Hey so this is a little random but I find it really hard to consistently practice between lessons and was wondering if anyone could benefit from an online accountability partner to be consistent with it?

I'm thinking we could connect on discord, we could share songs/playlists, youtube tutorials, inspiration and general updates and chat about how our salsa journey and practice is going.

I've been dancing around 6 months, I did some CBL at the beginning of the year had a gap of a few months and have now been doing Cuban salsa for 3 months. I'm 35F follow, from the UK (GMT +1) with Caribbean heritage. My goal is to plan a trip, probably Cuba, and be totally comfortable/confident dancing socially šŸ’ƒšŸ½

I'm not looking for anything intense, just some light accountability, mutual encouragement and sharing of progress/journeys would be awesome.

If this sounds good then dm or comment your age, gender, timezone, whether you lead or follow, what type of salsa and how long you have been dancing for :)

Thanks!

Anyone wanting to connect more to salsa music?

Other dancers in my scene have told me several times that they like how much I enjoy the music when I’m dancing, and that they wish they could feel it more themselves. They often say they wish they would connect more with the music but don't know where to start.

I’m neither a musician nor an expert dancer, but I’ve fallen madly in love with salsa. The more I discover, the more I wish I had more people to talk about it with. So I thought, perhaps I could write about my discoveries and maybe my excitement could help other people find their own connection to salsa music?

As a test i've written about three songs that I love to dance to and put them on an Ig account (not the ideal platform, but an easy start): ā€œHe Tratadoā€, ā€œEl Gran Varónā€, and ā€œUn Verano en Nueva Yorkā€. Each one of the 3 texts goes in completely different directions, which is what I find so beautiful about salsa ā¤ļøā¤ļø

Would you be interested in reading something like this? Feedback, wishes, ideas, and new salsa friends are very welcome!

Hello! I have been dancing since June this year and attended my first salsa festival in September

I would love some feedback on my musicality, movement, spins, steps, how I can improve etc. and also I feel like I never know what to do during dance breaks so I would really appreciate tips there! šŸ™šŸ½

I’m the follow in the video. Would love some tips on how I can improve but please be kind šŸ˜
