Rural gentrification and displacement are complex issues we know all about. Any variant of "Hurf-durf Moab wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for tourism!" or "Visitors pay your check" or "Motosports keeps Moab on the map!" will result in a ban.

Not my main, I’m having log in issues. I have a 13 year old black lab/golden retriever mix. He’s an ESA and everything to me. He has saved my life more times in 13 years than I can count. In 2024 I was in a very, very bad car crash. I’ve had 2 spine surgeries and multiple hospitalizations since then, but the panic/anxiety/ptsd/trauma was quite literally killing me and I was not getting ANY care in our home, Nebraska. I literally called everywhere in the state and finally just said, screw it and went somewhere that I knew was bad, I didn’t understand how bad it was because it was literally just a psych ward and I was suffering from episode of medical delirium caused by critically low potassium so for the first four or five days, they treated me like a schizophrenic. I was in the jumpsuit and slept on a hard piece of plastic with no bedding and my blood pressure was almost always above 185-200 from the anxiety until internal medicine finally got back on my lab results. Anyway, said fuck that, looked up my insurance online and found somewhere in California that treats people like me like patients not inmates so for the last week and half have been headed there.

We left Eastern Nebraska, but then due to an emergency I got stuck outside my vehicle in the Walmart parking lot for 6 to 7 hours trying to make adjustments. I think I almost died again because I was too weak to even drive for 2 to 3 days and could only even get out of bed by taking an extra half dose of ADHD meds. And I really needed to get going otherwise the place in California would have to probably resubmit everything again or something. I don’t know at the moment.

Back then, there was three of us. Right around the first week of August I was walking around the lake, because it really helped me reduce inflammation after my second surgery and we were about 3/4 of the way down with our walk and a six week old kitten ran across the highway and swam across a 20 foot drainage ditch and crawled up my leg up to my shoulder to save him so I obviously did. My dog has always been nervous about other dogs and has loved cats. He was originally stoked and when they were in a home, it was great, but it was not working on the road. My dog, Indiana, eating his actual dog food, and the only way I could get his kidney medication in him was by shoving it in pieces of fast food chicken. I finally found someone trusted to take Frank, my then roughly 3 month old near Colorado Springs. It sucked but it was best for us. We pushed through 3 states in 3 days. Had luggage fall out in Colorado (thankfully not down/up The Rockies). Indiana and I barely spent 30-40 minutes at Gardwn of Gods which was bummer but kept telling myself this is where we’d spend a full day. Because I’ve dreamt of this place since I was 3-5 years old and first saw The Last Crusade.

Sadly we got into town just after dark. The hotel I booked wasn’t gonna work. Needed ground floor and there was literally only a 2’x6’ spot for dogs to pee. Got a good nights rest and planned to go to the local dog park to let him start his day great, grab food and go check out the spots. Bad idea/timing. The whole time we were at the dog park nonaggressive but very, very loud dogs kept coming up to Indiana and barking in his face. We took a few breaths and got thru it. Went to a cafe I found online that was near and said dog friendly. Ordered ahead and tried eating and feeding him in the furthest possible part on patio away from Main Street and away from everyone but everyone kept acting like we were in the way and with the semi’s blowing by it sucked for both of us. On the way back to our car, some dickhead who was hopefully out of town tried coaxing my dog to his truck WHIKE WE WERE WAITING TO CROSS. He thought it was hilarious but my hands were so raw and cut up that holding his leash that hard hurt so damn bad. I cried going back to the hotel because I realized I needed to sacrifice just seeing the general area for my health and my dogs.

I’m using talk to text because hands have medicine and lotion on them. Hoping someone can help me after I close my eyes for an hour. Could someone with a jeep/truck/atv/whatever be able to take us by the places and maybe somewhere he can get out after to stretch because online says he’s not allowed out of vehicle. I’d try myself but he needed a break from being stuck in my car. Stops were extremely limited yesterday and the day before we were racing around getting Frank to his new home. I’m super overwhelmed at the moment and need to close my eyes and ice my back for an hour or so. I can pay you and will cover park costs and anything else I’d otherwise have to pay anyway. Just sucks that I’m only gonna get to see what I can from a hotel or car window on another stressful trek tomorrow.

Thank you. And yes, that’s exactly why his name is Indiana.

TRUMPONOMICS VANLIFE Hello, you salty Moab-ers! I come offering trade as the crazy tourist raising meat rabbits in a camper.

I breed TAMUK composite meat rabbits. I have 10 week olds just about ready to harvest (close to 4 1/2 pounds), and eight week old cuties. If you’re looking to get into meat rabbits these buns would be excellent to start a breeding program with - good tempered, fast growing (gain 0.67 oz per day on average), consistent large litters, and good mothering. You would either need to source the opposite sex elsewhere, or take opposite sexes from the two different litters. If that’s the case, I’ll help select for what would be a good match. The typical set up is a trio - 2 does, 1 buck. They should begin breeding around 5 1/2 months and then 16 weeks after that, you should begin being able to process two rabbits a week consistently. They are litter box trained (but all rabbits will still shoot out poop pellets when excited or scared).

I’m looking to trade for Timothy or alfalfa hay, and/or dog/cat food (NOT chicken based, 1 dog is allergic). Also willing to trade for large amounts of chocolate, or chickens that are ready to harvest** or already laying eggs.**

OK, whichever mod changed the flare from selling to Trumpenomics vanlife, I’m dying. Y’all better get used to bartering cause we’re gonna need to! (gods I hope I’m wrong)

???? Recent Weather/Recovery

Good morning, folks. I hope everyone is safe and doing alright considering the recent weather. Once the rain passes, how long does it usually take for area and trails to get back to normal? Does the ground stay wet for a while or dry quickly?

REVIEW Heartfelt thanks to rescue crews

I had an accident in Lockhart basin south of Chicken Corners this morning. I took a bad line down a rock ledge and my truck rolled on its side. Fortunately I wasn’t hurt. The truck’s SOS system activated and contacted emergency services. I explained my situation and answered many questions about where I was located, was I injured, was I alone, did I smell gas, etc. Three rescue groups responded including Moab Fire, Grand County EMS, and Grand County Search and Rescue who reached my location about 2.5 hrs after my emergency call went out.

Everyone was very professional and helped me get out of the truck through the passenger side window down to the ground. I’m 74 and have some mobility issues and couldn’t have done it myself safely.

The ride back to Moab was very challenging as it had been raining for several hours at the time. Areas were starting to flood and I’m grateful we all returned to Moab safely.

We’ve been planning a camping trip for a few months this weekend and like to camp dispersed on blm land in a travel trailer up up in the general area of mag 7. Does anyone have any beta on how muddy it is after all the rain? How quick does it dry out in the desert? I don’t wanna head down some dirt road and get stuck in the mud with a trailer

The Arches Shuttle is KILLING it !!!! 14 riders a day, on average. Great success! Absolutely incredible.

Y’all should be proud to have spent $500,000 in local tax dollars on what I wasn’t aware were essentially PRIVATE shuttle experiences.
Can we get bottle service in them next season?

HALP! Topo map made of wood in store downtown

I was just visiting Moab and saw a wooden topo map in one of the stores in the downtown. It has different shades of orange and some teals. I absolutely love it and regret not buying. I’m hoping someone can help me figure out what shop it was in so I can contact them and buy it over the phone to be shipped to me. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a picture of it. It was about 12”x12” and had a wooden frame and was priced at $480. It was sitting on the top shelf of a bookshelf near the back of the store and there were a couple other small ones next to it. All done by the same artist. I’m guessing it was a local artist. Does anyone happen to know what store this was? I would be so grateful.

PLAN MY ENGAGEMENT /WEDDING /VACATION FOR ME Better stargazing location, Arches or Canyonlands (Island in the Sky)?

Is there noticeable difference between Grand View Point (or Green River Overlook) in Island in the Sky vs Arches (say Panorama Point)?

Arches would be just over 30 min away vs just over 60 for Canyonlands, but I'd be willing to travel further if it's truly a different experience.

Or would you recommend a different nearby location from those 2? Thank you.

IT'S A SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERY! Help me identify our wrong turn 14 years later

Okay. It’s been like 12 years now but when I visited Moab they told us to do fins and things because it was easy. I had a front wheel drive jeep liberty. Somewhere along the way I think we took a wrong turn and ended up on a much more difficult trail. Not difficult in the way of like fun obstacles, but one lane roads with steep drop offs, switchbacks and it was very gravely and we had a hard time climbing sometimes. Can you identify it from these photos? I’d love to know what we actually did!

RANT Mike McCurdy and the Mystery of the Missing Verbs

After two candidate forums, multiple questionnaires, and an op-ed explaining why Mike McCurdy deserves another four years on the County Commission, I have developed a working theory of the McCurdy Theory of Government:

Step 1: Mike is on the County Commission.
Step 2: Something good happens.
Step 3: Mike did that.

I remain a little fuzzy on Step 2.

Mike tells us tourism is stronger. Tax revenues are up. Housing is being built. Relationships have improved. The economy is recovering.

Fantastic.

I have only one small, persnickety, apparently unreasonable request:

Could someone please show me the verbs?

Not “Mike was commissioner while...”

Not “Mike supported...”

Not “the Commission worked hard on...”

What did Mike do?

Did he propose something? Negotiate something? Rewrite something? Find funding for something? Build a coalition around something? Drag some hopelessly stalled project across the finish line through sheer lumberyard-fueled determination?

Give me a noun and a verb.

Because at one forum Mike said sales-tax revenue was up more than 25% and that this “comes directly from the work that I’ve done on the commission.”

That is an impressively direct causal claim for a sentence containing absolutely no information about the cause.

It's like standing next to a tomato plant in August and saying, “As you can see, tomatoes are up substantially this year. This comes directly from the work I've done in the garden.”

Okay.

What did you do to the tomato plant, Mike?

Did you water it?

Plant it?

Fertilize it?

Defend it heroically from aphids?

Or were you simply on the patio when the tomatoes happened?

And that's before we get to the fact that the roughly 25% figure included a voter-approved increase in the rural-health-care tax. Without that increase, the year-over-year growth was about 14%—still good, but rather less useful for the “behold the fruits of my personal economic stewardship” portion of the program.

The same mysterious fog descends whenever the questions become specific.

How should the county balance tourism revenue against residents' quality of life?

Tourism is important.

Correct. Next question: how should we balance it?

What should the county prioritize when money is tight?

Things that benefit locals.

Excellent. Which things?

How should we deal with political conflict?

Talk to people.

Groundbreaking. What happens when they still disagree?

How should the City and County work together?

By having good relationships.

We have now reached a dangerous level of insight.

And the truly baffling part is that Mike has been doing this job for nearly four years.

An incumbent should be able to answer these questions almost unfairly well.

He has sat through the budgets. Read the staff reports. Heard the legal advice. Watched projects succeed and fail. Dealt with state agencies. Dealt with federal agencies. Dealt with the City. Dealt with developers. Dealt with angry residents. Presumably discovered at least once that something he thought was simple was, in fact, an unholy municipal hydra with six funding sources, three interlocal agreements, and a lawyer attached to it.

There should be stories.

There should be scars.

There should be at least one sentence beginning:

“When we tried that in 2024, here's what we learned...”

Instead, the accumulated wisdom of four years in county government sometimes appears to have distilled down to:

Economy: strong.
Tourism: important.
Housing: needed.
Communication: good.
Locals: benefit.

This is not a governing philosophy so much as a collection of refrigerator magnets.

And to be clear, I don't doubt that Mike cares deeply about Grand County. I don't doubt that he talks to people. I don't doubt that he works hard.

But “I care,” “I listen,” and “good things happened while I was here” are three different propositions from:

“Here is what I accomplished.”

If Mike wants to run on the record of the last four years, great.

I'm just asking for the record.

Not the trailer.

Not the inspirational voice-over.

Not the montage where Main Street looks busy while uplifting music plays.

The part with the plot.

What did you push for?

What changed because you pushed for it?

What did you learn?

What would you do differently?

What do you want to do next?

At this point, I am not asking for a white paper.

I would settle for one completed Mad Lib:

“As commissioner, I ________, which resulted in ________, and in a second term I would ________.”

Any verbs accepted.

The 2001 Roadless rule protects public lands from future roads being built through them for logging and other purposes. This rule protects roadless public lands across the nation - including areas surrounding Moab.

The public comment period was supposed to end on the 21st last month - but was extended for 15 days. Today is your last chance to speak up.

Here is the link to the government webpage to submit your comment:

REVIEW County Commission LWV Debate

The LWV put on a great debate last night. It was well attended, well organized and the topics were great. My thoughts on who presented themselves and ideas the best.
Diego and Shalee - I think this is the tightest race, both seemed to have good, well thought out responses.
Rory and Neal - Definitely Neal! Rory kind of blundered, spoke more on the fact he is self funding his campaign, which if you look at his disclosure $35,000, donated by his father. Besides that Neal was well spoken, great answers and seems fairly middle of the road. Rory didn’t come off as a great option in my mind.
Mike and Everett - No contest here! Everett crushed it. Mike is a nice guy, but he seemed off, confused, and kept riding on the fact that he is from Moab. Everett had real answers, and spoke with confidence and directness. Not a huge fan of Mike to begin with so maybe a bit biased, but in commission meeting he always just regurgitates what the other three say and when he had to speak for himself in this setting he didn’t really have anything intelligent to say.
Winder and Wiggins- Both did a good job. Wiggins I think pulled it off in my mind as Winder is a great speaker, lots of fluff, but in the end I thought Wiggins spoke truthfully, thoughtful and has real world knowledge of Grand County.
Good event LWV!
