Megathread Johnson County Voting Information

Note: We'll keep this updated as best as we can, but election information can, unfortunately, change quickly. For the latest, reach out to the auditor's office in-person @ 913 S. Dubuque St in IC, via phone @ 319-356-6004, or online @ https://johnsoncountyiowa.gov/department-of-auditor. If you notice an error, PM me or send a modmail.

Deadlines

  • Mon, Oct 19, 5 PM: Last day to pre-register, and last day to request a mailed absentee ballot. The request has to be in the Auditor's office by 5, not postmarked.
  • Mon, Nov 2: Last day of in-person early voting.
  • Tue, Nov 3: Polls open 7 AM to 8 PM.
  • Generally speaking, mailed ballots must reach the Auditor's office by 8 PM on Election Day.

If you missed the registration deadline: You can still register at your polling place on Election Day. You'll need ID and proof of address.

Check your registration and find your polling place

Absentee voters: Iowa has no permanent absentee list, so if you voted by mail last time you still need a new request this time.

College students: You can choose to register at either your school or home address. If you register at school, you just need dorm name and room number. If you register at home, you vote there or absentee.

Polling place changes since 2024

Some weird people on the interstate.

I was on my way to HuHot after visiting a friend in the DSM area and I noticed that this one car in particular would NOT leave my proximity. All the way from the Altoona area to the IC Corridor.

Just riding my ass and trying to get my attention. They had Johnson county plates, so hopefully they'll see this and reflect on their creepy behavior..but my God..I was terrified. I had to take a detour to my destination, I had never experienced a panic attack like that in my life. I had to give them a smile, just out of fear to relax my nerves..

Go Vote Poster Removal

Post image
59 Upvotes

I’ve noticed the go vote posters all around town. I think they got put up over the weekend. And already I’ve seen a handful of them torn off or attempted to be removed. Which sucks on its own part. But then I’d seen some city worker power washing one off a bus stop on Mormon Trek. Only to later see that he left all of the now removed poster all over the grass. Damn shame to have Iowa city preach progression yet remove posters that should definitely be seen by students and young adults. Also GO VOTE!!!!

North Liberty is un-tabling Flock to take “possible action” on mass surveillance. Tuesday, 10/27 6pm.

Post image
50 Upvotes

Two weeks ago, North Liberty tabled its discussion of Flock so someone could go find and look at the contract NLPD signed back in 2024. It's coming back tomorrow.

The city attorney has determined that the city can exit the contract by not appropriating the funds for next year.

Let's show up, pack the room, and encourage that decision. We don't need Flock, or police, to keep a searchable records of our lives.

Parking garage wait list

Hello!

I am a freshman at uiowa right now and getting an apartment that doesn’t offer parking next year. I live about 3 1/2 hours from iowa city so it would be nice to have a car to be able to drive home or somewhere outside of iowa city for work.

I just got put on the waitlist for the court street ramp and the harrison street ramp. My waitlist numbers are 190 and 217.

Does anyone know if there is any chance of me getting a spot for the 2027 school year?

If no, please let me know of any other places to park my car or if you’re renting a spot out!

Got my car diagnosed at Firestone. Blower motor out. Need it replaced in my 2012 Nissan Sentra. They quoted me around $1100 mainly for the labor because it’s so buried in my dash. If anyone knows of ANYONE who can do this work for even a slightly lower labor wage please let me know asap!! TIA!!

Lost Cat, Woodpecker Trail

My friend and I were hiking on Woodpecker trail earlier today. We came across a sweet little torty I suspect was dumped here or lost. About 40 feet to the left of the "You are here" map marking.

She wouldn't let me pick her up, so we couldn't get her to the shelter. If anyone knows her, or has a carrier, I'd really like to see this sweet little thing rescued!

Bane Halloween Costume

Has anyone in town done a Bane (specifically Dark Night Rises) costume in the past and happen to have the pieces still around? Specifically interested in a mask but open to anything. Obviously willing to pay to buy/rent. Just trying to limit my consumption of stuff for a one time costume.

Herky Hunting

As of the past month or so, I have begun a collection of Herky statues! Unfortunately there is no actual map or full list of Herky statues in the Johnson county area. The Think Iowa City list is not complete with the diamond collection (2002 or retro statues) and does not have every statue listed even from the more recent poses.

I’d love if anyone could give me input on where to find some Herky statues that I haven’t found yet and where to look! I’m hopeful to have as many as possible before I graduate so any directions are greatly appreciated!! I’ve included pictures of the Herky statues I’ve found so far

Thanks in advance for any help on this; it’s greatly appreciated!!

Guy playing pool at Grizzly's last night 10-23

I kept looking over at you last night because I genuinely couldn't believe how bad you were at pool. You scratched the 8 ball twice and still had the audacity to keep calling your shots. Before leaving, I came over to ask if you'd ever played before, but felt bad and walked away. Hopefully you don't see this. I'm sorry.

What was with Rachel Yoder's comment?

At the book reading and q&a event for Jane Shoenbrun's new book Public Access Afterworld during the Refocus film festival, Rachel Yoder said multiple times that it was the longest book she had ever read. I was sitting in the upper level so I could see the audience checking how many pages there were (~560 pages). After, I overheard people mention how the book wasn't that long as we were leaving. It seemed like a strange thing to admit since Yoder is an author too.

Either way, excited to see Shoenbrun and also have their new book to read!

Family Neighborhoods

Looking for suggestions on neighborhoods that are more family friendly OR ones to avoid due to late night noise, etc. We just started looking around and are not from the area.

We have a soon to be 4yr old and are interested in moving for access to better arts education options for him.

Thanks!

Is it normal for people to get away with violence in Iowa City or USA in general?

I'm new to the states.

Saturday midnight right outside Deadwood, a person called me a slur and I confronted him. His friend who I didn't even know was there raised me up and slammed me to the ground and punched my head multiple times. I could have died. With like 100 people around me in bars. Opposite Prairie Lights, a cultural institution here.

I bumped into cops later and told them and they said there's no camera here so unlikely they'll find anything.

My conclusion is that I can do violence here and get away with it easily. Am I wrong?

Cat rehome?

I have a 13 month old cat that I need to rehome. I found her on the side of the road when she was only 5 weeks old and brought her home and nursed her back to health. Unfortunately my 12 year old cat absolutely does not like her and they started fighting. It was infrequent but now it’s more then twice a day. No matter how many times I try to separate them one always escapes. Long story short- I need to rehome the young one. Where can I go? She’s very very sweet, good with dogs, actually likes other cats (tested, it’s my old one that doesn’t like friends), and fully vaccinated.

Are there any families in the Iowa City area in need of breastmilk?

I have an oversupply of frozen breast milk collected in August and September. My baby won’t take a bottle, so I’m hoping to connect with a family who could benefit from it. I’m currently an approved milk donor with University Hospitals and Clinics, but I’m unable to donate this particular supply due to antibiotic contamination from multiple mastitis infections. I also occasionally have a glass or two of wine per week.

I want to be completely upfront so families can make an informed decision. I’m happy to share more information about the collection and storage history. If you know of a family who may need milk, please feel free to comment or message me.
