I've been wanting to learn how to play a flute for a solid minute now but idk if I can fork over 555 euros for yamaha yfl 222. But I really wanna try getting into this hobby. Are there any good budget options?

I’m debating getting a new flute but the new one is in line and I currently play an off set. My current flute also has a C# trill and the new flute doesn’t have a C# trill, but it does have the D# roller which my flute currently doesn’t have. The main difference is the new flute is gold plated and full body silver, and my current flute is not full body silver.

This new flute is a used Muramatsu which is why I can afford it. The tone on this flute is impeccable, but I’m wondering if it is worth the switch!

Would love some opinions on how important the C# trill is and switching from off set to in line. I do have small hands but I’m planning to modify it regardless with a thumb port and finger port.

my teeth weren't growing the right way and i chose to go with aliners instead of braces since you could take them off and I've heard they don't modify your sound too much. I'm on tray 1, it's my 3rd day, the last 2 days I've been practicing without them (except for the warm-up). i warmed up in aliners today, then had an orchestra rehearsal (still in them, which was painful), then i had a flute lesson for which i took them off and... i could barely hit any note. i was playing without them worse than with them. and it's a real shame since I'm having a huge competition in December and if i can't play like i used to it'll ruin my plans, or atleast loses me some time. my prof understands and is very supportive but I'm really worried. maybe i should warm-up in aliners? or is it just inevitable to experience something like that when you have aliners? would the best way be me postponing my aliners until i participate in a comp? please please please i need something to speak from an experience, I'm stressed as hell

So like I'm learning flute and when I go from Bb to C, the flute tends to fall, beause it's losing thumb support. I've watched a couple of videos but it's still not fixing this issue. Any advice? Where is the balance point usually?

So I have a VERY important audition in about a month, but I have a baby tooth without an adult tooth under it that's coming out (a premolar) and there's pretty much no way to stop it, and i'm not old enough to be eligible for an implant so there will be a gap. If it comes out before the audition, what can I do to not let my tone suffer, besides the obvious practicing?

Is there a name for playing the flute with an intentionally open embouchure to achieve an airy tone? I'm arranging a piece and while I play enough flute to know how to achieve the sound I'm looking for (aiming for a kind of calliope-like sound) what i was wondering if if there is a name for this technique or if I should just notate it as "open embouchure, intentionally airy" or something to that effect?

Ages ago I took my flute in for a COA due to a couple "noisy pads" (F, F#,C), and the tech "Put silicone on pads, need new pads next time".

Is this common?

I made the first hole by eye. Then, having measured the distance from the end of the tube to the hole, I divided it in half, thus obtaining the spacing for a semitone. Then, relying on these measurements, I made all the holes. It was hard for me to reach this hole, so I made a key. Honestly, I tried many options and spent a lot of time to come up with a design — in the end, I'm not an engineer after all lol. In the end, a key was the result. It consists of foil wrapped around the body of the flute, and a piece of a wooden ruler glued on with double-sided tape as a lever, and thick double-sided tape as a backing. It is soft and elastic enough, so this is the ideal option I found. It works thanks to a hair tie. I also added a piece of cardboard between the layers of tape in the backing to make it even thicker. This way I got an almost working mechanism. It slips a bit, but I'll think about how to solve this problem.

I got my mouth pierced (2 side labrets, a vertical labret and a tongue one) should I take them all out? Or just the one on the tongue? 2. What exercises do you recommend for my embouchure? 3. What exercises can I do for getting my sound clean? 4. Do you have a link for pieces that can improve my sound?

Hello. I’m in the UK. My 11 year old is finishing Suzuki Book 1 on a hired Yamaha 212 and we're upgrading. I'll also be sharing it. I got to about grade 4 as a teenager, and want to get back into it. Closed hole is fixed as the teacher's call.

We had a shop visit today, but it went a bit sideways. We got handed a 312, a Miyazawa MJ-II 30E and a Pearl 665 before realising they were a tier above what we'd asked for, and the 25E and Azumi Z1E weren't in stock. Liked the 30E, but A/B'd against a Pearl 505 later I honestly couldn't hear much difference beyond a slightly easier top register. The plan now is to go back when the specialist is in and make sure they have in the 30E and 312 again but also the Z1E and the 25E.

Three questions, please, if I may:

1. What should a Book 1 kid and a lapsed grade 4 adult actually listen for? I don't think we're good enough yet to hear what separates these.
   
2. Of the 312, 25E, 30E and Z1E, which would you pick and why?
   
3. Anything to ask the specialist or check before buying?

When looking at prescreening requirements, most schools ask for either “expositions of Mvt 1 and Mvt 2” or “entirety of Mvt 1 and Mvt 2 with cadenzas.” Does this mean that these are to be filled consecutively and in the same video? Or, for example, can I separately film exposition of Mvt 1 and then exposition of Mvt 2.

I’ve always assumed it should be consecutively, but since they don’t specify for any school I was curious. Thanks!

So, I am a decent musician trying to learn flute...quickly. I know that being "actually good" will take a while, but the good news is i play the piano, sax, trumpet, and guitar, so i know a decent amount. I also know the fingerings bc I have practiced them on my ewi. I have about three or four months to learn a fairly basic song, but I would have to play it on stage for a theater thing. How doable is it to get a good tone that quickly? any tips would be appreciated. Also, when starting today, I kept getting lightheaded after a little while of playing, idk if there's a way to fix that. Thank you guys!

I got a new flute a few years ago and haven’t cleaned the outside since I got it. i march and do pep band and my flute has been through it. I’ve noticed it getting dirty on the outside, especially in between the keys and such.

Ive tried researching but the fiber cloth is too big. Is there a good way to clean it? can I use a bit of isopropyl alcohol on a qtip? or a little water on a qtip? And I can’t take it to a professional- I don’t have the money. thank you for any advice and tips
