What does it mean when a cow is constantly bellowing?
I don't own cows, I don't know a ton about them, I know enough but not a ton as I just don't have any interest in them besides the fact that they're cute... but my neighbor has a fairly large herd of Angus Cattle, and for the past 4 hours straight there has been one constantly making a bellowing sound like it's not stopping, occasionally I'll hear another cow respond but it's mainly just that one cow, I'm like a quarter of a mile away and I can hear it clearly, it sounds kind of distressed and I'm just curious as to why it might be doing this?

As somebody who spends a lot of time in national Forest, and therefore a lot of time around cows, and I have a question
I don’t know if it’s biased because these particular cows are more noticeable, but I feel like cows that have a white face/white face markings are much more likely to be an aggressor and charge forward to protect the herd or just instigate shit.
Is my theory that the white faced/ white markings on face cows tend to be more aggressive or protective have some basis or am I just noticing them more?
If there is some facet of truth, is it a particular breed that they’re are or are mixed with?
Pictured is one mean cow in Wyoming. She’s got angry eyebrows and it is very accurate.

Bad looking cows
Hi, just getting into Cattle and started following a few local cattle groups on FB. One thing I see a lot of is when people put up their Cows for sale whether it's one or ten, there's always in the comments people saying those are some good looking cows and I'm trying to pay attention to what a good looking cow is for my own herd benefit in the future.
With that being said what does a bad looking cow look like? Can anyone share examples of bad looking cows other than skinny, and visual deformities. What sets apart a good looking cows vs a bad one when you put them side by side and to the untrained eye they look fairly the same.

Feed, RioMax, or Supplements (Winter)
Hi Everyone,
I have 7 bred heifers and stocked up on Teff round bales to feed them through the winter. I bought 24 tons at the start of summer at a good price.
I had a good opportunity to buy 9 more bred cows in a breed I want at a good price last week so I bought them and now need to purchase more feed but obviously prices are higher and with head count going up, I’m looking for efficiencies.
How accurate are the claims for Rio Max and feed reduction?
Are there other cost efficient ways to reduce my lbs of hay per day?
Considering picking up of some mixed bales of first cutting alfalfa and triticale mix at $180 a ton to cover the difference.
Thank you

Ear tags
Can anyone recommend a good durable cattle ear tag!? The ones we have are rolling up and fading. Tired of changing tags.

Know Who This Brand Belongs To?
Hi everyone,
My mom just got this horse in a trade recently without much history on him. What we know is he’s a 5 year old gelding shipped from “out west”. She is located in southern Michigan.
There’s not a lot of branding that goes on here, it’s not common even for cattle in this area. So I thought I’d reach out here to see if anyone knows where this brand belongs to or any possible history for this horse related to his brand!
Thanks.
Eating quality of a cow slaughtered shortly after calving?
I have a 4 year old cow with a recurring hoof problem being that she needs regular trims which are very costly. She is due to calf any day now. I have the butcher coming to do another animal shortly and I am thinking about having the cow done at same time.
The ideal scenario would be that the calf is born, left on the cow for colostrum and then taken off the cow to be bottle raised and the cow slaughtered.
Has anyone ever eaten a cow shortly after calving and what was the eating quality like? Should I pay the money to have her butchered properly or is she better off as dog food?

Milking & Music
Hello,
I work at a 1500 head farm (I don’t work on the milking team but I come in to help and then do fresh cows and sick cows.
At the previous barn where I worked only in the parlour, we would play music and I found that cows had better attitudes and were calmer.
I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.
I want this place to do the same as music has shown to improve other things in cows (I’m an RVT - I’ve read a few studies)
I just want some more opinions

What brand/type of feed do you guys recommend feeding a show heifer?
(Herd pictures for attention,)
my show season with my first 4h heifer is offically over and I’ll be starting to work/fatten up my next one first of November she’ll be about 3 & a half months of age when I get her.
i started my first heifer on Goliath but it made her very crazy like excess energy that I didn’t know what to deal with, she was getting roughly 4lbs of it a day. she was fed that for a month then we put her on BOC with molasses and beet pulp at shows. She had access to a mineral lick, hay and water 24/7.
the boc filled her out but she didn’t get that kinda chubby look i was told to aim for by more experienced people. So in short what do people recommend feeding? I can’t exactly get like those custom mixed feeds since the only place near me does it in bulk and I only got one heifer to feed lol
she’ll be shown in confirmation and not market, she’s also a Hereford if that makes an difference. I can buy multiple feeds to feed her but I don’t wanna be feeding like 5 different things at once/daily if that makes any sense.
thank you :D

Northeast winter sucks!
Moved my cattle off the summer pastures to higher ground where they have a smaller lot with 3 sided shelter for the winter. The lower pasture while larger, has a tendency to flood in late fall/early spring.
I hate this time of year as it means snow will be here soon and ill be lugging water :( It also means I'm just a few months away from processing our first beef! So excited for that!

Injury, liability, and how to manage.
I got hurt pretty bad this week in a cattle handling job. Not hard to figure out where but I handle 70-1200 cattle 1-2 days a week. Earlier this week I got berated by owner for having multiple other jobs. Then got hurt, not bad but bad enough to effect my ability to continue working without getting hurt further. I told 3 lower supervisors and got ignored, while cattle continued to be pushed into my control. After 1 1/2 to 2 hours, low and behold I got injured again. Neither super major, I'll recover but my mobility is going to be pretty limited for a week or 2. Why do we continue to push our volume of beef production so hard with these dynamics? What should I really do to self advocate here?? I'm not new, I'm not inexperienced... But I've grown really bitter and cynical about the industry. I got limited workman's comp now but it's only covering urgent care and small pharmacy bill. It's not covering lost wages, already limited living arrangement, and challenges to taking care of myself. I don't think the math adds up, or ever has. At this point, I'm ready to get away from beef work for good.

One is different
One is not like the others. She is a big pet and brings the rest in with her.
