Technical/Equipment Help and Information Need Help Balancing DJI RS 4 Mini

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all - looking for some help here. I (absolutely no videography experience whatsoever) am trying to help my wife balance her Sony A7 IV camera with lens. I’ve managed to get this far in the setup, and am now trying to balance the tilt axes. Per the videos I’m watching, the camera should be able to tilt up and not move forward / backwards. However, the lens is simply too heavy - it collapses in both directions no matter what I try to do. The combined weight is ostensibly 3.5lbs, so the gimbal should be able to handle it.

What am I doing wrong? Any tips? TIA

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Looking into starter cinema lenses

I finally got a dedicated video camera in the form of the Blackmagic 6k Full Frame, and I am loving it so far. The monitor, the way the camera feels in the hand, the image. I've only ever used photography lenses on my A7III, but I'd love to get better at manually focusing and using lenses with more character.

Currently, the Lumix S9 18-40 kit lens is my only L-mount lens. I've done research on good starter cinema glass, but I was curious if there was anyone who could share their experience with some of the ones I have my eye on, or if they recommend I simply hold off and avoid any of these options entirely.

  1. 7artisans Spectrum - I like the image quality, but there are some issues like focus breathing and color inconsistency. Still, it's hard to beat $250-$300 per lens.

  2. 7artisans Dream - I really love the look of these, and they are similarly priced to the Spectrums, but I do worry a bit about the 2ft minimum focus distance.

  3. Variety of Sirui anamorphic lenses - Sirui is doing a big sale on a lot of their anamorphic lenses, perhaps the most intriguing of which is the Venus 50mm for $300.

  4. Sirui VP-1 - The most expensive set of lenses, but I love the versatility of changing out mounts since I might keep at least one Sony camera around. I dont love the footage I've seen from people using them so far, but they don't look bad at all.

Of course, I could just keep on keeping on with vintage lenses, can't go wrong there. I'm looking to get more into documentaries, and I help shoot short films from time to time. These lenses would basically be for narrative work. Any testimonies or advice would be welcome. I try not to worry about gear too much, but I also like to know as much as I can before a purchase.

Business, Tax, and Copyright Vimeo... How do you cancel? Legally, they're supposed to refund me...

So my business is in a cashflow squeeze and we are looking to cut costs wherever possible. Vimeo is ridiculously expensive for what they are so are the first to go. However, Vimeo has simply put up their prices (again) and autorenewed. They did not send a message prior to this but this is the UK. We can simply cancel it and get a refund.

Because the law in the UK is the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCCA) means they legally have to refund us if we notify them of cancellation within 14 days of the renewal.

Except Vimeo doesn't do that. On their website, when I've tried to cancel, they have not offered a refund and instead want to illegally keep my money. And simultaneously cancel. So basically the worst of all worlds.

Anyone have any ideas? Is there a phone number? Someone there I can speak to?

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Those who have used the BGH1, what is it's biggest flaw?

Considering one for documentary, to be smaller than my C200's, and more modular, but with a similar hours long battery life, higher record formats, interchangeable-lenses and external EVF/monitor options.

I know it is missing things like internal NDs, and on-body XLRs. But it has somethings that a lot of cameras in the budget dont, like high bit rate, high bit depth, and higher frame rate 4k. Plus MFT is really nice for videoproduction.

My budget is ~$1000-$1500 CAD or ~$713-$1067 USD (this camera, here, comes in at about $1500).

So far I really like it and have one for sale near me. What are some potential production downsides that would make it in-ideal?

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Best audio setup for a 3-person talk show? Lavs vs boom mics vs dynamic mics

I’m filming a 3-person talk show(probably more in the future) and struggling with microphone bleed and the amount of audio editing required in DaVinci Resolve.
Current setup:
● RØDE Wireless PRO with Lavalier II microphones
● DJI Mic
● Sennheiser MKE 600 for general audio
● Zoom H6 and Zoom F3 recorders
Everyone has their own audio track, but the lavaliers pick up quite a bit of the other speakers, making post-production tedious.
I’m considering a few options:
1. Upgrading to better lavaliers (Sanken COS-11D, DPA, etc.).
2. Using two overhead boom mics to cover all three people.
3. Switching to three Behringer XM8500 dynamic mics connected directly to my Zoom H6.
I’d prefer keeping microphones out of frame, but audio quality and an efficient editing workflow are more important.
Budget: around $1,000 max, preferably much less.
What would you recommend? Is upgrading the lavaliers actually worth it, or should I change my recording approach entirely?

Hi All!

I try shooting these low angle shots using Samsung s23 ultra and DJI om 4 gimbal but shots aren't stable.

Is this because of shaky hand, having gimbal doesn't help in this case?

Hey everyone!

Shifting gears from on-set hero tools to the editing desk:

How’s your current setup treating you? Are you running a beast of a rig, or squeezing every last drop of life out of a older laptop like me?

My computer is currently struggling to keep up with 4K 50fps multicam without losing timeline flow. Though I have to admit, buying a humble Anker 9-in-1 hub and a 1TB Samsung SSD recently felt like a total life upgrade. Simple tools for the win!

Quick questions for the community:

Proxies or no proxies? Are you creating them religiously or risking it all on native files?

The new NVIDIA Spark chips: Total game-changer or just hype for videographers? Would you buy in?

Let’s hear about your setups, your timeline headaches, and any small gear tricks saving your daily life!

Technical/Equipment Help and Information A stabilizer or a DJI pocket 4p

So as the title implies I'm kind of torn between two things right now.

I want to have either a stabilizer like the DJI Mobile 4/5/6/7/8. the DJI Ronin or something like the DJI pocket 4p to videotape B roll footage or just in general better looking shots. Once I'm further along I would also like to make videos of cars driving but that is about a year or so out at this point.

And because if I use my current setup (iphone 17 pro max and the Blackmagic camera app) the stabilization works, but the moments where I walk are still very wobbly/shakey.

What would my best course of action be with this? should I just get an older stablizer like the DJI osmo mobile 4 or something or is this a skill issue that can be learned to fix in post, like Davinci?

again any and all help is appreciated because right now I'm not sure a secondhand 40 bucks dji gimbal could help me with what I want or if it's better to save up and get something dedicated like the pocket 4p.

(I do want to add, I am refering to DJI stuff in this post a lot purely because I am very new to all of this and DJI is one of the brands I know the two products of. if you have other things/brands I'd love to hear it)

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Tripod for motorsport

Im really lost on what tripod to get for my motorsports videography.

I have been looking at some of smallrig's tripods. First i looked at smallrigs AD14 Carbon Fiber Heavy Duty Tripod but then figured out that the the length is too long to possible fit in my suitcase. Then i took a look at the SmallRig x Potato Jet TRIBEX SE Tripod but my issue is the price can a tripod really be worth 452,9€??

So i guess my question is, are there anybody who have any recommended tripods for videography?

Equipment/Software News & Reviews I built a pitch/treatment/reels analytics app for directors and am looking for feedback!

Hi there! I'm a commercial/music video director and I've found myself feeling like any time I send in a PDF or InDesign Publish Online treatment link to pitch on a project it feels like just throwing a concept into the abyss. I never know if my treatment is actually being read or if there's an element of it that loses a reader's interest where if I could identify that problem, I could fix it.

So, as a side project for the last little bit I built what I think is a better way to share treatments. It has detailed analytics and gives a timeline view of everything someone does when they look at your deck, how long they spend on each page, what they click on, and where they lose interest.

It also has a built-in reel creation tool that directly connects to your treatment, so you can send in one link and a client can flip between the pitch package and a custom video reel of your past work for the job (both of which offer detailed analytics)

I know this is a pretty niche app as it's directly built for pitching directors, but if that's you and you want to try it out, I'd love to get some feedback! If there are any hidden bugs or feature ideas you have my DMs are open! It's currently in alpha right now but I've already begun using it on my own pitches and it's been a breath of fresh air.

https://folio.direct/

Link here - in the sign up area you need to select request invitation for access. Please include a link to portfolio for me to approve the request as for now I do want to limit sign-ups to just directors/creatives. Appreciate your time!!

Discussion / Other The requested shot first, then room for alternatives

On an action production where I led a camera unit, we had complete creative freedom from the director and camera department. During the briefings, I was usually asked where we wanted to position ourselves.

If they wanted a specific shot, we did that first. After that, we were given room to shoot our own ideas. We followed the storyboard and the planned shots and also brought additional ideas into the sequence.

How do you agree on the required shot and the room for alternatives during a briefing?

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Good camera bag for weekend trip

I beg someone suggests a good bag that can carry a small video rig (fx3), spare lens, and clothes for the weekend. I don't mind having one pretty hefty bag to carry.

Currently every time I do a trip I've got 2 backpacks and look like a 19 year old travelling southeast Asia.

Discussion / Other I feel like I'm lost and don't know what to do

I started doing photograpy just because it was the most joyful thing for me, I was shooting school events. After like 3 months started to work for a low tier volleyball team, the pay was so low but it kept me alive and also I felt like I was learning and practicing. After some time I thought to myself I should do video as well and started learning editing and shooting. For the past 6 months I've been doing editing and shooting, some of are for money some are not. Currently working as a freelancer for a company in US doing travel recap videos, editing social media talking heads for a client and doing some shoots in my home country as something comes up but all the time I feel threatened and thinking like I'm not good enough to be working in this industry and I never will be. I feel like I'm not advancing learning new things and coming closer to finally deliver good quality work to clients. I live in Istanbul, Türkiye. The pay here is mostly not that good and I can't create a price for my work properly. I don't know how to get clients, how to advance, how to network and how to become a videographer/photographer and work in this industry in the future. I don't have any gear of mine, when I work I either work with rentals or borrow it from friends.(I'm 20M, college sophomore year right now studying french translation). Pls help.

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Audio Artefacts on VideoMic Go II

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all!

I've been using my VideoMic Go II for a little while, mainly for car videos like the example above - I've noticed that there's some audio artefacts that sound like clipping, though they seem to be present even in much quieter videos? It happens both on automatic microphone sensitivity and on manual.

Is this something that I'm doing wrong as a beginner or is this some form of hardware issue like the cable connection or just clipping?

The camera is a Nikon Z30 in case that's relevant, thank you!

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Audio/Video Desynchronization in MP4

Hello i have a problem with a bunch of videos. The audio is not synchron to the video. I tried to fix it with the help of chatgpt. I asked chatgpt to summarize what we did so far. If anyone have an idea that would be great. And sorry for my english 😥

CHATGPT:

I'm trying to diagnose and fix an audio/video synchronization problem in an MP4 file using FFmpeg on Windows. I've already tried several common solutions, but none of them have fixed the problem. I'd appreciate help identifying the underlying cause before attempting further corrections.

For now, I want to focus on one file only: Testvid.mp4. If I can get this file working correctly, I can investigate whether the same solution applies to my other videos later.

1. Symptoms

The audio and video appear to be out of sync.

What I have observed so far:

  • The video starts with an introductory music section.
  • When people begin speaking, their lip movements appear to occur approximately 2–3 seconds before the corresponding audio.
  • It is not yet established whether the offset remains constant, gradually increases over time, or changes abruptly at a particular point.

I want to determine whether this is caused by incorrect timestamps, a timing problem within the streams, an encoding issue, or something else.

2. Media Information

The following information was obtained using FFprobe for Testvid.mp4.

Video stream:

  • Codec: H.264
  • Resolution: 640 × 480
  • Frame rate: 25 FPS
  • Duration: 1352.04 seconds (22 minutes, 32.04 seconds)
  • Number of frames: 33,801
  • Start time: 0 seconds

Audio stream:

  • Codec: AAC
  • Sample rate: 44,100 Hz
  • Channels: 2 (stereo)
  • Duration: 1440.809002 seconds (approximately 24 minutes, 0.81 seconds)
  • Start time: 0 seconds

Container:

  • Reported duration: approximately 1440.81 seconds

The audio stream is therefore approximately 88.77 seconds longer than the video stream.

Both streams reportedly start at timestamp 0. However, I understand that this does not necessarily mean that the actual audio and video content is synchronized.

3. FFmpeg Tests Already Performed

I have tried the following approaches. None of them successfully resolved the synchronization problem.

Test 1: Re-encoding with generated timestamps

ffmpeg -fflags +genpts -i "Testvid.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -fps_mode passthrough "test_repaired.mp4"

Result: The synchronization problem remained.

Test 2: Delaying the audio by two seconds

ffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -filter_complex "[0:a:0]adelay=2000|2000[a]" -map 0:v:0 -map "[a]" -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k -shortest "test_audio_delayed.mp4"

Result: This did not produce the desired synchronization.

Test 3: Changing the audio playback speed

ffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -filter_complex "[0:a:0]atempo=1.06566,asetpts=PTS-STARTPTS[a]" -map 0:v:0 -map "[a]" -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k -shortest "test_audio_tempo.mp4"

Result: The synchronization was still incorrect.

Test 4: Remuxing without re-encoding

ffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy "test_remux.mp4"

Result: Remuxing alone did not fix the problem.

Test 5: Slowing down the video

ffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -vf "setpts=1.06566*PTS" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -crf 18 -c:a copy -fps_mode vfr -shortest "test_video_slower.mp4"

Result: This did not resolve the synchronization problem either.

Test 6: Creating a 60-second test clip

ffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -t 60 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset ultrafast -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 128k "test_60sec.mp4"

Result: This did not provide a satisfactory solution.

4. Additional Diagnostic Findings

I also ran FFmpeg to decode the file and process the streams without producing an output video file.

The command used for the original file was:

ffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f null NUL

The file was also processed in a separate decoding test. The output did not show obvious Error, Invalid, or Warning messages.

FFmpeg reported processing 33,801 video frames. Interestingly, its final progress timestamp was approximately 24 minutes, even though FFprobe reported a video stream duration of only 22 minutes and 32 seconds.

I do not know whether this discrepancy is significant or simply a consequence of how FFmpeg reports progress for multiple streams.

FFplay was also tested, but it did not solve the problem. A few isolated A/V difference readings were approximately -0.002 and 0.125 seconds. These readings were insufficient to establish the cause.

5. What I Would Like Help With

Rather than trying additional arbitrary audio delays or speed adjustments, I would like to understand the actual timing problem.

Specifically, I would appreciate advice on how to:

  1. Inspect the audio and video packet timestamps, including PTS and DTS.
  2. Examine the actual video frame timestamps and determine whether they are consistent with a 25 FPS stream.
  3. Compare the audio packet timestamps and audio sample timing against the video timeline.
  4. Determine why FFprobe reports a video duration of 1352.04 seconds while the audio and container durations are approximately 1440.81 seconds.
  5. Establish whether the discrepancy is caused by incorrect timestamps, an unusual stream time base, missing or duplicated timestamps, an encoding problem, or another issue.
  6. Identify a reliable way to repair the file without unnecessarily degrading its quality.

I am using FFmpeg on Windows. My FFmpeg build is a recent full build from gyan.dev.

I am happy to run additional FFprobe or FFmpeg diagnostic commands and share their output.

The important point is that I want to identify the cause first, then apply a correction based on the measured timing data. Simply changing the audio or video speed based on the difference between their reported durations has not worked so far.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.FFmpeg: Severe Audio/Video Desynchronization in MP4 — Different Stream Durations, Need Help Diagnosing the CauseHello everyone,I'm trying to diagnose and fix an audio/video synchronization problem in an MP4 file using FFmpeg on Windows. None of them successfully resolved the synchronization problem.Test 1: Re-encoding with generated timestampsffmpeg -fflags +genpts -i "Testvid.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -fps_mode passthrough "test_repaired.mp4"Result: The synchronization problem remained.Test 2: Delaying the audio by two secondsffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -filter_complex "[0:a:0]adelay=2000|2000[a]" -map 0:v:0 -map "[a]" -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k -shortest "test_audio_delayed.mp4"Result: This did not produce the desired synchronization.Test 3: Changing the audio playback speedffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -filter_complex "[0:a:0]atempo=1.06566,asetpts=PTS-STARTPTS[a]" -map 0:v:0 -map "[a]" -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k -shortest "test_audio_tempo.mp4"Result: The synchronization was still incorrect.Test 4: Remuxing without re-encodingffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy "test_remux.mp4"Result: Remuxing alone did not fix the problem.Test 5: Slowing down the videoffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -vf "setpts=1.06566*PTS" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -crf 18 -c:a copy -fps_mode vfr -shortest "test_video_slower.mp4"Result: This did not resolve the synchronization problem either.Test 6: Creating a 60-second test clipffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -t 60 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset ultrafast -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 128k "test_60sec.mp4"Result: This did not provide a satisfactory solution.4. Additional Diagnostic FindingsI also ran FFmpeg to decode the file and process the streams without producing an output video file. The command used for the original file was:ffmpeg -i "Testvid.mp4" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f null NULThe file was also processed in a separate decoding test. The output did not show obvious Error, Invalid, or Warning messages.FFmpeg reported processing 33,801 video frames. Interestingly, its final progress timestamp was approximately 24 minutes, even though FFprobe reported a video stream duration of only 22 minutes and 32 seconds.I do not know whether this discrepancy is significant or simply a consequence of how FFmpeg reports progress for multiple streams.FFplay was also tested, but it did not solve the problem. A few isolated A/V difference readings were approximately -0.002 and 0.125 seconds. These readings were insufficient to establish the cause.5. What I Would Like Help WithRather than trying additional arbitrary audio delays or speed adjustments, I would like to understand the actual timing problem.Specifically, I would appreciate advice on how to:Inspect the audio and video packet timestamps, including PTS and DTS.
Examine the actual video frame timestamps and determine whether they are consistent with a 25 FPS stream.
Compare the audio packet timestamps and audio sample timing against the video timeline.
Determine why FFprobe reports a video duration of 1352.04 seconds while the audio and container durations are approximately 1440.81 seconds.
Establish whether the discrepancy is caused by incorrect timestamps, an unusual stream time base, missing or duplicated timestamps, an encoding problem, or another issue.
Identify a reliable way to repair the file without unnecessarily degrading its quality.I am using FFmpeg on Windows. My FFmpeg build is a recent full build from gyan.dev.I am happy to run additional FFprobe or FFmpeg diagnostic commands and share their output. I've already tried several common solutions, but none of them have fixed the problem. I'd appreciate help identifying the underlying cause before attempting further corrections. For now, I want to focus on one file only: Testvid.mp4. If I can get this file working correctly, I can investigate whether the same solution applies to my other videos later.1. SymptomsThe audio and video appear to be out of sync. What I have observed so far:The video starts with an introductory music section. When people begin speaking, their lip movements appear to occur approximately 2–3 seconds before the corresponding audio. It is not yet established whether the offset remains constant, gradually increases over time, or changes abruptly at a particular point.I want to determine whether this is caused by incorrect timestamps, a timing problem within the streams, an encoding issue, or something else.2. Media InformationThe following information was obtained using FFprobe for Testvid.mp4.Video stream:Codec: H.264Resolution: 640 × 480Frame rate: 25 FPSDuration: 1352.04 seconds (22 minutes, 32.04 seconds)Number of frames: 33,801Start time: 0 secondsAudio stream:Codec: AACSample rate: 44,100 HzChannels: 2 (stereo)Duration: 1440.809002 seconds (approximately 24 minutes, 0.81 seconds)Start time: 0 secondsContainer:Reported duration: approximately 1440.81 secondsThe audio stream is therefore approximately 88.77 seconds longer than the video stream. Both streams reportedly start at timestamp 0. Discussion / Other How do you quote the post production part of a shoot and edit package?

Shooting is predictable. Editing time isn’t. I’ve been burned by quoting a flat number and then spending twice the hours in the edit.

Do you estimate per finished minute, per hour of footage, or track your past jobs to calibrate? Looking for a method that doesn’t sink me.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Will 3 sets of Rode Go Pro wireless mics interfere, causing issues?

Hello!

In the past I shot a podcast with 2 sets of rode wireless lavs on my own client and it was okay I don’t feel like I had interference, but I was always told there is interference when using more then 1 set at a time.

Anyways I’m filming another podcast but the agency wants me to film it with 3 rode go pros sets, I have one and they gave me more sets just for this one podcast. I told them there might be interference and I advise not to use because of the interference. They didn’t really care about what I had to say tbh and just said to use it and just use the internal recordings, they don’t need me to edit it so I was just like okay.

The shoot is Tuesday and I was planning to adjust all the settings on the sets they gave me for internal recording as well as doing some quick tests sometime tomorrow. Whenever I do mic tests it I feel like it never really mimics the real world because I feel like whenever I do tests at home everything’s fine then when I’m a shoot everything gets screwed somehow lol, so that’s why I’m asking reddit in case.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information I need camera and hardware recommendations for a specific recording setup

Hello everyone

- I have a rather specific video recording setup in my mind and I need; cheapest, widely available, video cameras for this job.

- Cameras could even be Osmo pockets, Go Pros, whatever. My biggest preference is that they are supposed to be wide angle cameras, 170/180 degrees at least.

- I will put 3 cameras from three different angles, they will be recording same object at the same time, and I want them to save the recording to a single computer or any storage device really. This will save me so much time. I don't want to take the recordings from camera's SD cards individually, it will take too much time.

- Also, it would be very nice see three cameras' preview in a single monitor.

What would be your recommendations for this setup? Please tell me if you need more details, thanks in advance.,

edit: why my post is getting downvoted? what the hell is wrong with you people?

Hi! I’m 16 (F) and i’m really into ice hockey and figure skating, i go to an art school where im studying to be a media technician. I love spending time in the ice rink and if i could i would only work there. I love videography, but im not sure how to even start working as a skating videographer! Any tips would be appriciated.

The video down below is a short clip of what i recorded at the most recent competition :)

Edit & update: thank you to everyone who said i should contact the club!! I did and they reposted my videos giving me credit and said i can build my portfolio with them :D

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Shooting a long term doc and want to change frame rates, am I screwed?

I started shooting an indie documentary without knowing much about videography before.

I landed myself in a good role, and I realized what’s missing is 24fps, I’ve been shooting at 29.97 the entire time.

It is unknown of when this doc will end, or if it’ll even be used.

But I want to change to 24fps now, would it be bad or weird to watch if I just bring all the other footage to 24, then just shoot the rest that way?
