Enterprise TrueNAS 27 is Here!
We just posted a new blog on the availability of TrueNAS 27: https://www.truenas.com/blog/truenas-27-is-here/
Here is the TL;DR: The release previously tested as TrueNAS 26 is now TrueNAS 27, starting with RC.1 in October 2026, because most users will run it during 2027 and the community asked for version numbers that match the year a release is deployed. The schedule is unchanged, and TrueNAS 27.0 still releases in early December 2026.
The release many of you have been testing as TrueNAS 26 has a new name. Starting with RC.1, available October 6th, it is TrueNAS 27.
If you don’t care about version numbers and want to dive into the details or get to the downloads, please read the RC.1 feature blog.

Hardware Found this little Intel A310💕
550 RMB (83 USD), 2 DisplayPort out, open fin design. I have a down draft fan blowing from the top of the PCIE area along with the LSI card.
Seller said it came from a Lenovo prebuilt. Now happily chugging along in my Haswell NAS doing AV1 transcoding and Immich AI stuff.

General IP Changed, fixed but now no apps work
Was attempting to upgrade RAM in my home server but the sticks I used apparently aren't good. Went back to the original and the IP changed on the truenas, not sure how exactly as I did have the mac address tied to the original IP on my router. I changed it back through the network settings on the truenas gui but now none of my apps or dockge containers are working. All of my data is still there in the pools and I can access my media through plex. Not sure exactly where to start.

Community Edition Do they need to look at it, or actually use it?
The question I've started asking before any of this: does the other person need to look at the thing, or use it?
Look means they form an opinion. Use means they click, type, change state, and expect the change to still be there when they come back. The answer cuts the options down faster than any feature comparison.
If they only need to look
Most of the work you're about to do is unnecessary. A five minute recording answers more questions than a live session, because they can pause it, rewind it, and watch it at 11pm without you. A screen share is the next step up and costs nothing to set up. Neither one needs an address, an account, or a decision about who gets in.
If they need to use it
Neither of those works. A recording can't take input. A screen share means you hold the mouse for them, on your schedule, which stops scaling at about the second person.
What each option actually costs
Recording: nothing, and it keeps working after you've gone to bed. The cost is that it goes stale the moment you change something.
Screen share: no setup, but it's synchronous and you're the one driving. Fine for one person, once.
Live link: they use it themselves, whenever they want. Costs you a scoping decision — who gets in, for how long, how to stop it — and something has to stay awake.
A copy running somewhere else: the only option that keeps working when your host is off, and the only one that costs you a second environment to keep in sync.
Where I got this wrong
I used to default to the live link because it felt like the real thing. Half the time the person only wanted to look, and I'd spent an afternoon on access scope for someone who was going to open it once and reply that it looked good.
Now I ask first. Are you going to click around, or just have a look. The answer usually saves the afternoon.
Curious whether others here ask, or just hand out a link and let people sort themselves out.

Community Edition Fiz uma ferramenta open-source (BETA) pra mapear e monitorar a rede visualmente — roda no TrueNAS via Custom App
Fala, pessoal!
- Monitoramento via TCP (portas 80, 443, 22) e ICMP (ping)
- Alertas em tempo real: bolinha verde/vermelha, efeito cascata amarelo e alerta sonoro
- Link público somente leitura pra compartilhar o diagrama
Link do repositório: https://github.com/Joao-Monticelli/NetCable-v1
Valeu!

Community Edition Did I do it right?
It's been over a year since I built my Nas and has multiple use cases for it. I'm wondering if I should just separate my data physically from apps/services for easier maintenance. My current setup works as a media library, storage, render manager with sheepit container, local ai, jellyfin, transcoder, and obs streaming.
My specs: 5700g CPU, 64gb ram, 256gb SSD(os mirrored), 1tb nvme(apps mirrored), 14tb HDD(raidz2 pool 4 drives), RTX 5060 ti 16gb, 10gb nic.
Obviously not all at once but most can run on background simultaneously. If something breaks though it affects everything else. How did you set up your home lab and why? I don't need it but am looking at nucs. Really tempting

Community Edition New 10 Gb/s NIC works, but only if old 1 Gb/s link is connected
Scratching my head here. TrueNas 13.0, 25.10.7 - Goldeye
My recently rebuilt NAS was connected from the motherboard 1Gb/s connection to my router, and then 1 Gb/s to my desktop. After trying and failing to get a 10 Gb/s NIC to fit in my SFF desktop, I've had to settle for the 2.5 Gb/s on my desktop motherboard.
So, the network now goes: NAS over 10 Gb/s direct copper to a the SFP+ port on my Mikrotik CSS610 switch, then 2.5Gb/s ethernet from the other SFP+ port to my desktop. The router is connected to a 1 Gb/s port on the switch.
The SFP+ NIC has an IP of 192.168.1.186. The old ethernet has an IP of 192.168.1.199.
If the old ethernet is unplugged, I can't access the TrueNAS interface on both 192.168.1.186 or detect any network drives.
If the old ethernet is plugged in, I can access the interface on both 192.168.1.186 and 192.168.1.199. The drives are detectable and after a speed test they are transferring at 2.5 Gb/s.
So, it's clearly using the faster 10 Gb/s link, but it only works if the old 1 Gb/s link is connected? I assume it's a config issue but I can't see anything in the network page.

Community Edition Truenas Multiple Networks Question
I wanted to know if it was possible for Truenas to natively handle 2 separate LAN connections at the same time and if its possible to have software toggles to turn off one connection when needed. I know that what I want can be done with extra hardware if truenas can't do this, but I want to make it as easy and cheap as possible.
From what I read, its very clear that it can handle 2 connections for things like fail overs, but it wasn't as clear on the possibility of aggregated or concurrent usage of both connections though.
I ask because I currently have a 50mbps upload with nothing faster available at my house which has basically relegated the nas to cold storage or streaming for the people I give access to. However, I, and 2 friends I give access to live and work near a campus that has a very fast unified network across like 4 miles of land and we were able to get much faster local speeds between our places this way. Because of this I wanted to have it set up so I could connect the NAS to my own internet AND this local network at the same time depending on our use case.
I am very set on this idea because one of those close friends has a 5000mpbs fiber line where he's at too, possibly allowing us to route through the local network to his house and then out to the internet through his faster connection.
And before you say it, we all wanted to just put it directly in his house but his wife thinks this local storage will put you on a list, along with being generally paranoid one of our friends will store a pirated movie or something and get them in trouble despite the fact we just use it for basic storage and hosting (think photos and junk, and stuff like a stoat server)
(I also understand the security implications being a semi-public network too even with an as needed toggle, but its still appealing considering we got up to 500-800mbps no issues, a hugggeee leap over my 50mbps upload.)
Hardware The best-value NAS drive right now isn't a NAS drive - here's what's actually cheaper
Are you buying drives for a pool soon? Here's what the current US prices and Backblaze data say, because the regular forum wisdom is a bit out of date.
CMR vs SMR is still the first filter. An SMR drive looks fine until a resilver, then the long writes choke it and it can time out and drop from the vdev - exactly what the whole 2020 WD Red mess was about. It is worth checking the specs before buying anything.
On capacity, the best price/TB right now sits around 18TB-22TB. Under 16TB you pay the tax on small-drives (fixed costs per drive for components), and the new 30TB drives are still priced too high (around $47/TB). The value lies around 20TB. For example: 18TB Exos recently dropped to $600 ($33/TB), 20TB WD Gold is $36/TB, 22TB Ultrastar $38/TB.
The surprising part is: at every capacity, the cheapest drive per TB is an enterprise one, not a NAS drive. Exos, Ultrastar, Gold and Toshiba MG all undercut IronWolf and Red per TB right now. The usual "enterprise costs more" assumption is just backwards at the moment, and for a pool it's a good deal. It means higher workload rating and a 5-year warranty for the same money or even less.
On reliability: most current drives are a tie. Almost everything current is <1% annualized failure rate in Backblaze data, and the best (a 24TB Toshiba MG11 and a 14TB Ultrastar) sit around 0.5%. In reality, 0.8% against a 1.0% is the same. The one exception worth flagging is the 24TB Exos ST24000NM002H at 3.24% on a ~9,600-drive sample - about 6x the best, so probably one to avoid for a vdev.
Everything is compiled into a monthly report - best $/TB, the reliability, and the biggest price drops: https://www.nasdisks.com/report/
All HDD models (CMR/SMR, failure rate, $/TB, price history for every current NAS drive) are here:
https://www.nasdisks.com
Prices are US. Failure rates are from Backblaze lifetime Drive Stats (Q2 2026 report), and CMR/SMR is from manufacturer datasheets. If a drive's missing or a call looks off, flag the model and it'll get sorted.
Disclosure: it's my site, and the buy links are aff. (they cover hosting). The data's open under CC BY (completely free), so you can use it on your projects.

Hardware First time NAS enquiry, need all the help!
Hi gang!
Sorry if this post breaks a rule, but I am just very lost and looking for some guidance for a prospective NAS Build!
I am currently assembling a DDR4 ram based NAS Build, but I am unsure of what processor would be best for my purposes.
My idea is to go with something AMD, say a 5800X3D as its AM4 and would be very powerful. My main use for the NAS is streaming my own content and general storage. Maybe a game server or two. Would this be complete overkill, or would there be a better power efficiency/better encoding processor?
Overall budget around €1500/$1700!
Any help would be much oblidged!
~Kooky
PS any small Mini iTX cases for a 4 bay NAS recommendations are welcome!

Community Edition What's still reachable on your network that you forgot you opened?
The thing that caught me out wasn't exposing something. It was forgetting what I'd already exposed.
Last year I sat down to write out every way into my network. Not the services — the ways in. It took about forty minutes and the list was longer than I expected. Three of the entries I couldn't remember creating.
That's the actual problem with access. Nothing breaks when it outlives its purpose. A service that's down gets noticed in an hour. An address that's still live eight months later gets noticed never.
What I do now
One list, one line per grant. Address, who it's for, when it should end. It lives in a text file next to the compose files, because that's the folder I actually open.
A review on the first weekend of the month. Ten minutes, one question per line: does this still need to exist. Most months at least one doesn't.
Names that say who, not what. If I can't tell from the entry who it was for, I've already lost the thread.
Nothing that takes input behind an address. Read-only results are fine to share. Anything that executes what a visitor types isn't, no matter how convenient.
The part I got wrong for years
I treated giving someone access as the end of a task. It isn't. It's the start of an obligation with no owner and no deadline, which is exactly the kind of thing that never gets done.
The setup side of this is well covered here. The teardown side basically isn't, and it's the side that decides whether you have a problem.
Curious how people here handle it — is anyone keeping a real inventory, or is it all memory and good intentions?

Community Edition Want configure boot drive as raid, but server already has data
A while ago I made a personal NAS for backing up files, the current boot drive is a 64gb ssd and the storage pool is a raidz2 with 6 3tb drives. I want to upgrade the boot drive to 2 mirrored 128gb ssds, but im not sure where I might put the data on the server when I upgrade(I currently lack enough continuous outside storage to put the data currently on the server). Should I save up money and buy temporary storage/place pieces of it on different devices and reinstall truenas, or would it make sense to clone the boot device to one of the ssds and then setup the mirror on the live system, or something completely different?

Community Edition Permissions and NFS/SMB woes
Hello all! I'm in the middle of setting up my first truenas setup, and it's been going well, everything is quite intuitive, but I'm being massively hindered by permissions and mixing of SMB and NFS.
I understand the general idea behind setting up permission on a dataset, but I feel I don't understand it enough to warrant me not losing access to my data. I'm getting stuck on who should I make the owner of a dataset? How do I set up the users in the ACL in a sensible way? Do I use POSIX or nfsv4? Why the heck do the ACLS need a default user/group, a mask, an other? It all feels a bit overwhelmingly complicated for a home setup, to the point I don't feel confident in properly setting up access to the files on it.
And along with that, I'm understanding I shouldn't mix NFS and SMB access on the same dataset. For example, I wish to make one for my homelab where I'll be housing my jellyfin movies and paperless PDFs, but I would like to inspect my datasets from time to time to inspect if the correct files are being put there, or to manually put a movie in a folder, etc. but I'm not sure how to go about that. How does everyone else manage this? I come from a Synology Nas where it didn't seem to care whether I used NFS or SMB on a folder, but I should probably accept truenas just works differently.

Community Edition PHP / Nextcloud and TrueNAS catalog
Apparently NextCloud has now released their fixed PHP in their docker catalog, any word on when the TrueNAS app catalog will reflect this?
Currently, new installs from the app catalog are installing PHP 8.5.11 instead of 8.5.12 in the Nextcloud app.
Nextcloud does not appear to have incremented their version #, just replaced the PHP package within the current version.

Community Edition Question about Mirrored datasets and how they work with applications.
Hello,
I am a big nooby when it comes to truenas. But I am trying to learn and get more knowledge from professionals like yourself.
Basically, my dataset or data pool is mirrored from a 2tb hdd and 2tb ssd. I love using truenas for storage, but I also use it for things like hosting a minecraft server via Crafty app.
Is there a way to see which drive the crafty app is primarly running off of? Is there a way to choose which drive it runs off as well?
Minecraft rendering really depends on the drive type and i want it to run on SSD. I've been having performance issues with rendering chunks and want to see if its the drive choice.
