Inherited pond Advice on my mom's pond

My Mom moved into a house that has a small fish pond out back. The fish seem to be active and come out to eat when she feeds them but we have never been able to see through the water because it is so dark and grimy. I have an aquarium but don't know much about ponds- my first thought was to toss in a bunch of hornwort to starve out the algae but now that I am here and seeing the pond, I think its going to take a lot more than that. AFAIK there is no filter in the pond.

This is in tennessee mountains so it freezes over in winter. The fish survive and we see them again in spring. Is there anything I can do now while visiting to start rehabilitating it?

Pictures are from when she has tried scooping out the gunk but it stirs it around.

Wildlife Frog phobia

It's been my dream to have a pond in my backyard, I've been planning for a 20 gallon mini pond, Walstad style hopefully. But I have a complete phobia of frogs. I know in theory that they're cute and good for the ecosystem and all, but I just personally can't, I just can't.

Is there a chance that building a mini pond won't attract frogs or a way to keep them away without hurting them? Or should I just give up on the idea?

It's in a corner closed off by big walls, but the entrance does lead to a storm drain about 30 feet away

Fish advice Need advice on how to temporarily move goldfish from pond

Found a leak in our 200 gallon pond recently. It is stocked with 8 medium sized goldfish. We keep the fish in it over the winter by adding a heater and aerator. We also created a greenhouse type cover that we put over the pond.

My husband and I inherited our stocked pond from the previous owners of our house. They would drain it and put the fish in a tank inside.

We have winterized the pond since we moved in 4 years ago, and all the fish have survived every year.

My question is, how should we go about taking the fish out of the pond temporarily so we can fix the leak? I was looking at purchasing a 70 gallon bucket to put them into, but I'm worried that it would be too small?

I've attached videos for reference - that's about as low as we get the water level, before we fill it up again. We refill it every other week or so. second video is of what the greenhouse set up looks like.

thanks! :)

water level low here, think its a 200 gallon pond? inherited from previous owners of house.

Quick question First time winterizing

My 300 gallon stock tank pond is needing winterizing. It's plastic, above ground, on a concrete pad next to the house in ABQ, NM.

Before it freezes in the next month or so, I need to put a heater in to keep it from freezing solid. The inhabitants are trapdoor snails, minnows, and gambusia so they are all cold hardy so long as it doesn't freeze completely.

Should I remove the aerator? Move it from the bottom to higher up?

What heater/de-icer would you recommend?

my pond has been pretty good so far, i set it up in July and cycled for 6 weeks before addin 10 shrimp and 4 spotted blue eyes. It’s pretty decently planted and I try to keep a good level of natural leaf litter and things like that. My shrimps and fish have been happy

i’m based in south-east queensland, australia and we’ve been DROWNED with rain recently, i’ve continued to touch up the water with chemicals when needed and the parameters all look good but now the rain has settled i have a crazy amount of this algae growing - any suggestions to get it under control?

Build advice 4x4 DIY Patio Pond

Looking at helping my parents build an above-ground pond roughly 15ft x 3ft x 2ft for their covered patio.

Came across a company called Woodblocx, but unfortunately they are UK-based and we’re in the US.

Does anyone know of companies offering similar DIY wooden pond kits in the US?

If not, I would appreciate any and all tips / pointers for building a pond of this size out of 4x4 lumber.

Fish advice feeding over winter with sturgeon and koi

UK based so typical UK seasons / weather to consider. Im looking for some advice regards winter feeding with my sturgeon.

when I only had koi, I would do the typical summer feeding, switch to less frequent feeding and wheatgerm as it got colder and eventually stop feeding during the coldest period. my sturgeon which is around 3 feet long now, has high protein feed all year round. however this means water and filter cleaning still has to take place all over winter, but the koi still go down onto the sturgeon pellets every time i feed, especially when I dont give them koi feed when its really cold.

should I just continue to feed all year round as I have been the past couple of years, or should I do something differently?

im not sure if this is just how things are when keeping sturgeon as well, or how do other people manage winter feeding qhen keeping both koi and sturgeon.

my first sturgeon did die years ago (they were stocked as a pair, this one fed while the other one clearly didnt get enough food)from being malnourished over winter, and im now well aware that by the time symptoms show its usually already too late.

Fish advice Fun fish for outdoor ponds

What are some fun and good looking fish you can keep in outside pond around 1500l (225cm long x 115cm wide x 70cm deep)? I was thinking of some European perch since there probably the closest you can get to cichlids (which are my favorite group of fish) or dojo loaches but sadly those are illegal du to them being able to survive and outcompete native species, that is the same with pumpkinseed and related sunfish species.

Hey all

Noticed this white spot on our fantail this morning. Any idea ideas what it could be, and how to resolve?

Water parameters have been checked and are all fine.

I have aquarium salt anti-parasites and fungus treatment and I also have melafix on deck.

It’s a 500L pond.

Thanks

Edit: I’ve just checked the fish again and the white lump has fallen off, it’s now just a white mark.

Build advice Overgrown pond restoration tips

New home came with a pond that was completely overgrown when we moved in. I cleared a bit of the ‘shoreline’ and discovered the original owner (30+ years ago) lined the slopes with riprap. I don’t think it’s very deep, and when we moved in we had more of a drought, the bottom of it appears to be full of decaying muck. The overall vibe back here is just kind of dirty and gross feeling. I’m wondering what I should do to make the water appear cleaner, and more inviting? I’ve seen a lot of ‘restoration’ posts in this sub, but so far I haven’t seen any that were this overgrown. Any tips or advice?

I've been trying to increase vegetation at the pond edge. I'm a firm believer that vegetation makes the pond.

Build advice Pond Restoration

Hello Everyone,

New pond person here. We purchased this old home 3-4 years ago and are now getting around to landscaping. The landscaping around the pond was completely overgrown and am now considering some possibilities of a new retaining wall/patio and restoring the pond. The pond was installed in the mid 80's by previous owner. Looking for advice on how to restore this pond. I would like to add a EPDM liner but I am not sure how to anchor under the dolomitic limestone boulders as there isn't space to excavate beneath the boulders and the concrete basin. Do I add rock or a shelf in the basin under the boulders to then anchor the EPDM liner? Or should I try a installing a termination bar to anchor the liner? On the one side near the walking path on the old patio area, there are limestone pavers captones that would be removed and replaced with new stones. Any recommendations on anchoring the liner under the bridge? Any advice and recommendations from the experts out there would be really appreciated.

Fish advice How do you all give away fish?

Bought about 12 goldfish since the store told me I'd lose about half of them based on having a brand-new pond and because they were ultra cheap. Only lost 2, one to a snake and one when my pump went out. Now they're getting a bit big and I want to give a few away to keep the pond healthy. Are you all just using facebook and telling folks to bring their own bag/bucket? Just trying to make sure I don't send them away to an early grave.

Inherited pond Pond discovery, now what?

Hi all!

Unearthed this man made pond in my back yard this past spring. It was so full of plant/weeds we literally thought it was just a planter but lo and behold it was holding water in it the whole time. I pulled out all the roots and gunk that I could at the time and then got distracted by other projects over the the remainder of the spring and summer. I never got to the true bottom I don’t think. Plus frogs were enjoying it so I left it. It holds water steadily and never overflows. There is a skinny clear tube in it that I have not discovered where it goes and I’ve never seen a pump of any sort but maybe it’s hiding behind the rocks.

Right now I have it drained because it’s collecting with pine needles (right under a pine tree)

Id love to bring it back to its former glory for next spring/summer but not sure what I should be doing with it over the winter. Do I cover it? just put a mesh over it? leave water in it? I highly doubt I’ll ever have fish in it. in the spring do you power wash it out?

See pics of when I first found it, started digging athrough it and then how it remained for the summer. Located in New England

thanks in advance for any advice!
