On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Donkey Kong Junior; Marvelous: Mōhitotsu no Takarajima; Dokodemo Taikyoku: Yakuman Advance; Pikmin; Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All and more

8 Upvotes

On this day (October 26) in Nintendo history...

  • Donkey Kong Junior  was released in 1982 for the Game & Watch New Wide Screen in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, Mario has captured Donkey Kong, and it's up to his son, Donkey Kong Jr., to run through the jungle, collect Mario's keys and free his father. DK Jr. has to dodge Snapjaws by jumping and grabbing the vines as he moves up the stage. Once he reaches the top, time his jump to grab the key swinging on the vine. The level will then restart with part of Donkey Kong's cage removed.
  • Marvelous: Mōhitotsu no Takarajima  was released in 1996 for the Super Famicom in Japan. In this action/adventure/role-playing game, developed by Nintendo R&D2, many years ago, when the seas were ruled by the pirates, Captain Maverick was the worst of them. It is said he left an astounding treasure hidden on an island filled with traps and puzzles. The time of the pirates ended. Now three boys, Dion, Max and Jack, are camping on an island.
  • Dokodemo Taikyoku: Yakuman Advance  was released in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this Mahjong game, developed by Nd Cube, choose a character and face up to three extra players. Put together a winning hand from the picture or number tiles by drawing tiles and discarding those you don't need. The player with the winning hand ("Yaku") is the winner. The game includes an in-depth tutorial, plus the ability to call up help at any time during the game.
  • Pikmin  was released in 2001 for the Nintendo GameCube in Japan. In this real-time strategy/puzzle game, developed by Nintendo EAD, players control a spaceman named Captain Olimar who has crash-landed on an unusual planet. The goal of the game is to help Olimar collect his vessel's lost parts, which have been scattered all over the planet. Luckily for Captain Olimar, the planet is inhabited by strange little creatures, called Pikmin. Pikmin are plant-like life forms that come in three different colours red, yellow and blue.
  • Otona no Joushikiryoku Training DS  was released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this education game, developed by HAL Laboratory, test your ability to work out everyday problems within a time limit. You are posed a series of problems and you must solve them as quickly as you can. You are tested on Courtesy, Society, Intelligence, Traffic, Art and Music. After completing the test, you are given a score based on how you performed. You can only score once a day, but you can practice the tests as much as you want.
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All  was released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this adventure/visual novel game, developed by Capcom Production Studio 4, Phoenix Wright is back! The courtroom drama is heating up with ruthless D.A., Franziska von Karma. New colorful characters, dramatic stories and gameplay - the defense never rests! Four shocking new cases! New "Psyche-Lock" feature! Use questioning to reveal hidden testimony!

A quick review of the Japanese Nintendo Switch Online Mega Drive controller

5 Upvotes

I picked up the Nintendo Switch Online Mega Drive controller at the Shibuya Nintendo Store on a whim yesterday. Here's my quick review of it.

The good:

  • It’s a solid controller, as expected from a Nintendo-made device.
  • It has a home button and a capture button, something that’s severely lacking from the SNES and Super Famicom controllers.
  • It’s a 6 button controller, unlike the US and European version of the controller which is just a 3 button. The 6 buttons are usable on the EU/NA version of the NSO app just fine without issue.

The bad:

  • The Genesis/Mega Drive app on NSO hasn’t been updated since April 2025 with no indication on when/if it will actually get an update.
  • The real thing suffers from this too, but it’s really lightweight.
  • The buttons cannot be remapped. This makes it basically impossible to play the (now delisted) Sega Genesis Classics collection with it, because it has no in-game remapping.
  • The button mapping is a little weird. The buttons are mapped as follows:

A = A

B = B

C = R

X = X

Y = Y

Z = L

Start = +

Mode = ZR

There’s no way to press the minus/select button with this controller at all, which can limit its use in some games as well, even if you can remap the controls.

I'd recommend this controller if

  • You like fighting games and want to play them with a 6 button layout.
  • You are visiting Japan, have an NSO subscription and go to a Nintendo Store and want something unique.
  • You're a big fan of Sega and Genesis/Mega Drive games.

7 Upvotes

For Being an 80s console game Balloon Figth Is a great game,the idea of a game were you Need to pop balloons a Really fun mechanic and the gameplay itself Is Easy to understand but can be Really difficult and simulatanous multyplayer was a lot for the time i Believe, even though the Ligthing Is an Easy Way to rump up the difficulty Without putting any effort in it

Baloon Trip mode Is nothing special,but the standard game Is great

Why Nintendo games soundtracks have generally similar soundtracks?

0 Upvotes

I noticed all Nintendo games, especially the ones from 2000s, have very similar simply-composed soundtracks.
Why did they choose to do so?
The system had problems in reproducing a more complex soundtrack or is it a stylistic choice?
I noticed most of the times the soundtracks are not particularly elaborated

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Lifeboat; Disney's Beauty & The Beast: A Boardgame Adventure; Game & Watch Gallery Advance; Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

9 Upvotes

On this day (October 25) in Nintendo history...

  • Lifeboat  was released in 1983 for the Game & Watch Multi Screen in Japan. In this action game, developed by Nintendo R&D1, a fire has broke out on a luxury cruise liner, and the passengers are trying to escape overboard into the lifeboats. How many passengers can you rescue? Move the lifeboats to catch the falling passengers in the lifeboats, and then bring them safely to the left or right shore. Each lifeboat can only hold four passengers. If a passenger falls into the water or onto a full lifeboat then you get a miss.
  • Disney's Beauty & The Beast: A Boardgame Adventure  was released in 1999 for the Game Boy Color in North America. In this boardgame adventure game, developed by Left Field Productions, choose your character and roll a die to move them along the board. When you have moved a certain number of spaces you will enter one of nine minigames. Each minigame is played differently, from helping Miss Potts put out fires in the kitchen, to having Lumiere catch drips in the basement on his flames.
  • Game & Watch Gallery Advance  (known as Game & Watch Gallery 4  in North America) was released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance in PAL territories. In this compilation, developed by TOSE, enjoy six blasts from the past - and discover more. This collection includes Mario's Cement Factory, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3, Fire, Boxing, and Rain Shower. Each has a modern mode featuring updated graphics, sound, gameplay and all-new twists. They can also be played in classic mode in their original, LCD-style glory!
  • Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land  was released in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this platform remake of the Nintendo Entertainment System's Kirby's Adventure, developed by HAL Laboratory, appearances can be deceptive. Take Kirby for example. At first glance he's a cute pink blob, but under that blancmange-like exterior beats the heart of a true warrior.

What are you favourite memories of these games? How do you think they hold up today? Hash it out in the comments.

NSO retro game service is pretty awesome

54 Upvotes

I was one of the people who was disappointed the virtual console did not carry over to the Switch. However, 8 years later the retro game service under NSO turned out to be pretty good for the most part.

We got most of the retro games that were taken down with the virtual console when the service ended. The retro controllers, the addition of GameCube and Virtual Boy games and the classic game music service offered definitely added value to the Expansion Pak subscription. I hope we will also get Wii and DS games in the future.

My biggest issue with the service is the missing option to purchase the games like we were able to do with virtual console. I’m concerned on what will happen to the games and our save files when one day Nintendo pulls the plug on the service like they did with virtual console. Hopefully Nintendo will at least have a replacement retro game service if they decide to do this. Also the slow pace of new games being added monthly is another area Nintendo should improve on.

Do you enjoy the retro games service under NSO or do you like virtual console better?

Why didn’t Nintendo create a second SNES Mario game?

0 Upvotes

The NES had three different, but all superb Mario games: SMB 1, 2, and 3. You could even say 4 if you wanted to include The Lost Levels, but I consider it to be more of an expansion of the original than a standalone entry.

Super Mario World was awesome, but it sadly never received a sequel or a follow up on the same console. Why is this? It would’ve been an awesome addition before moving onto 3D.

And yeah, I definitely know about Yoshi’s Island, and while it is still a Mario game via it featuring Baby Mario/Luigi, the focus is heavily on Yoshi. So?

Guys we NEED a Kid Icarus Uprising remake

56 Upvotes

Kid Icarus Uprising is a 9/10 game if you can get past the controls. And with the HUGE popularity of third person shooters like Deadlock, Marvel Rivals, and Fortnite, if it was made with standard third person controls, it would be easy to pickup for most people. Also comp for Light VS Dark would go hard

Did Nintendo ever give a reason why they won’t further update Tomodachi Life Living the Dream or give it an Expansion Pass?

0 Upvotes

It’s been 6 months since the game launched, and while I still kinda play and enjoy the game, I recently discovered Internet fans feeling like there could have been more content by now, and it’s crazy that this game had a 9-year Development Cycle since it’s missing some things compared to the 3DS version.

I mean, Nintendo’s giving Pokopia and Fire Emblem Expansion Passes and people are making a big deal out of that, with Pokopia DLC part 2’s release date about to be announced any day now, it looks like that game will keep getting content, like another DLC for a Snowy Area next winter. Pokopia might get stuff for a long time to keep the hype cycle going. But I think it’s almost time for a Tomodachi Expansion pass.

Nintendo never covers Sales Numbers for all their DLCs, but it looks like they always do very well and get great Word of Mouth from the fanbases, and with how well Tomodachi did, making 8 million copies a decade later, they should add more stuff to the game, like an Arcade or the Concert Hall back. I hope EPD 4 has time now that they’ve finished Switch Sports Resort.

The past two consoles have had way too limited online interactivity

0 Upvotes

Why would I buy an 80 dollar game to play with people online that I can't trade jokes and stories with I know it's a family oriented company but if a parent can afford an expensive switch 2 for their kid then the parent can definitely afford taking two seconds to restrict them from accessing features that would let them talk with strangers I mean why is Nintendo adding gamechat when they've disabled finding users I've played with for tons of games there's different apps everyone's using to contact each other nintendos censoring for the kids like they're the only thing kids play are they a delusional company yes am I done with nintendos shite completely and I'm super angry about this because I've stuck with Nintendo since I was a kid I could've grown up with PlayStation or Xbox and had way more fun all these years

AND THESE GAMES HAVE BEEN TERRIBLE FOR YEARS THEY SHOULD TELL THAT THEY NEED A GOOD ONLINE SYSTEM IM NOT INTERESTED IN ANY OF THE NEW GAMES THEY ARE REDUNDANT BORING AND SOUND LIKE THEYRE WRITTEN PRODUCED DIRECTED CURATED BY REDDITORS THAT DONT KNOW WHAT LIFE IS
