2026 Animal Resource Guide for Mobile, AL

Post image
27 Upvotes

Please spay and neuter your pets, strays, and community cats whenever possible! Mobile has an animal overpopulation problem, making it difficult to rehome animals. The shelters are already full of loving animals that need homes, so please do your part to help prevent more unwanted litters.

Times are tough, and cost can make it harder to get animals the care they need. This resource list includes organizations that may help with spay/neuter services, rehoming, and pet food assistance. Please check each page for current information, requirements, and availability.

KITTEN SEASON TIPS:

Spring and summer are kitten season in our area, which usually means more kittens being born while shelters and rescues are already near capacity.

If you find young kittens, do not assume they have been abandoned. In many cases, the mother cat is nearby and may be away looking for food. If the kittens are clean, warm, quiet, and not in immediate danger, the best first step is usually to watch from a distance and give the mother time to return.

Kittens may need help if they are sick, injured, cold, covered in fleas, in danger, or crying continuously. If possible, contact a local shelter, rescue, or experienced foster for guidance before moving them.

If you're able to safely catch and foster the mother cat with her kittens, that’s often the best-case scenario. Keeping the family together gives the kittens their best chance while also making it possible to spay the mom once the kittens can eat on their own.

Cats are pregnant for about nine weeks, and an unspayed female can have up to five litters per year, with around four to six kittens per litter. That is why one unspayed cat can quickly multiply into many more kitties needing homes.

Here is more info on what to do if you find kittens outdoors!

RESCUES/SHELTERS TO REHOME/HELP WITH FOSTER:

Rescues and shelters are often full and may not be able to take an animal immediately. Be prepared to foster at home during the process.

NOTE: When rehoming an animal, check vet references to ensure you are placing the animal into a safe and loving environment. Some people will take free animals for unsafe or exploitative reasons.

If you are interested in fostering an animal, you can also reach out to these organizations.

LOWER-COST SPAY/NEUTER AND VACCINATIONS:

Spayed and neutered pets can have lower risks of certain cancers, infections, and health complications, helping them live longer, healthier lives. Spay/neuter also saves the lives of animals you’ll never meet, because fewer accidental litters means fewer animals entering shelters and more resources for the ones already here.

The Mobile SPCA also offers $10 off spay/neuter coupons that may be used at select veterinary clinics, including Semmes Animal Hospital, Animal Hospital of Mobile, Highlands Veterinary Hospital, Oasis Veterinary Hospital, and Great Oaks Veterinary Hospital. Prices are set by each vet and may vary, so call the clinic directly for current pricing, fees, and appointment availability.

NOTE: Spay/neuter appointments may require a bit of a wait, especially for spays. Be prepared to schedule a month or more in advance. Pregnant cats can still be spayed, and spay-abort is a common part of rescue work. As heartbreaking as it sounds, every new litter stretches already limited shelter and rescue resources. Preventing one litter can mean more food, foster space, medical care, and adoption opportunities for the animals already waiting for help!

To the trolls that have systematically started downvoting my post - get a life you triggered snowflakes.
I’m glad I can keep you fascist Nazi losers entertained, but you will be paying for it.
That I promise.
And more than likely it’s law enforcement - same ones that dump trash in my yard daily.
What a pathetic existence. But it’s about to get a lot worse I promise you.

Our street hasn’t been paved in over 30 years and has been ripped up by MAWSS sooo much. Please let me know if you guys have any advice! Also please don’t hit me with any “just give up” type comments.
I live in midtown if that’s relevant.

Foosakly’s changed their pricing but are keeping the old price up. It’s been this way for 2 weeks. Check your receipts. I told them this is Illegal and they said “I don’t know about illegal but we couldn’t get the new file uploaded.”

Wanted to report it to the AG but the form was a hassle to work with.

EDIT: I have blasphemed the sacred cow. Mods, can I get a flair that says Iconoclast?

Nasal septum surgery/ENT surgeon

Has anyone had surgery to have a deviated nasal septum corrected by a local surgeon? If you have a recommendation for a good surgeon, and any ones to avoid, it would be appreciated.

Anyone available to DM for group of 5?

We have a group of 5, ages range from 35-50s, who are interested in a Daggerheart campaign. Everyone is basically new. I’ve never dm’d and would prefer not to if I could find someone else willing to. We will meet on Sundays 12PM-4PM shooting for at least twice a month with our first session to take place in December in person only. Currently meeting in Chickasaw area since it’s the most central location for everyone.

Advice Have Airbus Offer - How is it There?

Same topic as title, I live in Charleston and have an offer from Airbus and have questions. I guess the big one is, how is the cost of living over there? They offered 2/3 of what I'm currently making although relo is included. Do they negotiate at least? I feel like someone shouldn't start at the bottom of the pay band as a II when they have over 20 years experience.

Midtown looks cute, but what's the catch? Is the high school really that bad? I hate leaving the mortgage rate I got in 2022 for what's available now but we wouldn't owe a lot on a place over there the same size as what we're in now. That's really the only part of town I've looked in since we don't really like suburbs.

How are the hours at Airbus for the Conformity Manager job title? I feel a little spoiled with 7-4:30 9/80s at the small Aerospace company I'm currently with because I'm able to be with my kids a lot.

Calling it now: Mobile River Bridge will never be built

because Mobilians won't pay tolls. Y'all don't ever want to pay for your infrastructure. You are being asked to pay for 1/3 of the bridge costs, and you refuse.

Your grandparents paid tolls for Bankhead Tunnel, but Mobile wants blue states to pay for its stuff.

Bring on the downvotes, y'all don't like unvarnished assessments of the city.

Good place to take kids trick-or-treating?

My kids live in Birmingham and usually go to the same neighborhood every year but they’ll be with me in Mobile this year and I don’t have any idea where to take them trick or treating. I live near Airport Blvd and I-65. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Edit to add we prefer traditional neighborhood trick or treating over trunk or treating.

Advice GED classes/tutoring

I’m looking for affordable GED classes, a tutor, or free resources to help my mom prepare for her GED. English isn’t her first language, but she speaks it fairly fluently. She could use some extra help with writing (sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation) and reading comprehension as well.

I’m teaching her basic computer skills myself, but since I’m also in college, I’m hoping to find someone/a class that could help her with the other subjects. Any recommendations for local programs or tutors would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
