your magnesium dose is probably lower than the front of the bottle says

the big number on the label is often the weight of the whole compound, not the actual magnesium. glycinate, citrate, oxide all carry different amounts of elemental magnesium.

check the supplement facts panel for the elemental amount. if it isnt listed, you might be getting a lot less than you think. forms act differently too. citrate tends to loosen things up, glycinate is usually easier on the stomach, oxide has a lot by weight but doesnt absorb as well.

and then theres whether the label is accurate at all. a usp or nsf cert gets you most of the way there, or a coa for your batch if the brand will share it. thats pretty standard for prescription stuff now (peppy care does it for every lot), so its fair to ask supplement brands too.

if you have kidney issues or take other meds, run high doses by your doctor.

disclosure: i work at peppy care. we dont sell magnesium.

Insomnia and b1 and magnesium glycinate supplementation

Hi all,

I have recently started taking 500mg thiamine hcl (solgar brand) in the morning and 200mg of magnesium glycinate (now brand) at night. I also take a multivitamin in the morning.

I have also noticed even more disturbed sleep than usual and I normally suffer with insomnia. Are my doses too high or low? Or is there anything else I can do?

Thanks

Low potassium normal B 12?

Hey guys! Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit , couldn’t really find one for electrolyte imbalances. So I’ve been having Fatigue, hypertension and headaches, frequent ruination, muscle spasms and numbness at times. Was trying to figure it out and thought about electrolytes. So I ate a banana and drunk coconut water yesterday morning and took all my vitamins and felt significantly better matter of fact I felt normal until night time. My last blood test showed everything was fine except my potassium and vitamin were only BORDERLINE low. Like at the cut off. B12 was great. But it seems like this is what’s causing the symptoms considering everything was resolved yesterday morning after eating bananas. I even stopped going to the bathroom as much. Today I woke up feeling fatigued again and fast heart beat and using the bathroom a lot. I just wanna know how to consistently balance my electrolytes. I was drinking a lot of water and I eat a lot of salt too. I just wanna consistently feel okay

Thanks guys!

Folate, Iron & Vitamin D Deficiencies, Severe Brain Fog, Dizziness & Fatigue Has Anyone Recovered From This? I Just Want to Feel Like Myself Again…

Hey everyone,

Back in July, I suddenly started experiencing brain fog, difficulty concentrating, and problems with speech. It happened pretty much overnight, and I felt noticeably different from how I used to feel mentally.

I started getting blood tests done, and my folate level came back at 3.1 ng/mL (reference range: 4.50–32.2), indicating a deficiency.

I kept investigating my symptoms and getting more blood tests until September. Here are my latest results:

My blood test results:

  • Ferritin: 94.84 µg/L (reference range: 30–400)
  • Folate: 7.83 ng/mL (reference range: 4.5–32)
  • Iron: 50.35 µg/dL (reference range: 65–175)
  • TSH: 5.51 mIU/L (reference range: 0.27–4.1) my TSH was within the normal range when I first developed my symptoms back in July. It only became elevated in subsequent blood tests. I'm wondering whether this change could be related to my folate, iron, or vitamin D deficiencies)
  • Vitamin D (25-OH): 19 ng/mL (reference range: 30–100)
  • Potasium 4,23 (reference range: 3.5-5,1)
  • Sodium: 140,72 mmol/l (reference range: 136-145)
  • B12: 501,40 pg/ml (reference range 191-663)

My folate level has increased since the initial test, but I'm still experiencing a lot of symptoms. My iron is also below the reference range, my vitamin D is low, and my TSH is elevated. I'm wondering whether these abnormalities could be contributing to my symptoms and whether there might be an underlying issue causing some of them.

My current symptoms:

  • Dizziness and lightheadedness.
  • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating.
  • Feeling mentally different from how I used to be, like I'm not quite myself anymore.
  • Waking up feeling unrefreshed, regardless of how much I sleep, and experiencing severe fatigue throughout the day.
  • Occasional air hunger feeling the need to take a deep, satisfying breath to feel like I'm getting enough air.
  • Caffeine seems to make my brain fog and dizziness significantly worse.
  • Alcohol also seems to exacerbate my brain fog and dizziness.

What I've tried so far:

I took 5 mg of folic acid daily for three weeks, along with 46 mg of elemental iron daily, but unfortunately, I didn't notice any improvement in my symptoms.

I then started wondering whether IV treatment might help correct the deficiencies more effectively and fastly, so I decided to try IV supplementation.

Six days ago, I had my first treatment, which included:

  • Vitamin D3 injection: 100,000 IU.
  • IV folic acid: 30 mg.
  • IV iron: 200 mg.

So far, I haven't noticed any improvement following this treatment. I understand that six days might be too soon to notice a difference, but it's discouraging to feel the same after trying to address these deficiencies.

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who have experienced something similar.

I have a few questions:

  1. Has anyone experienced persistent brain fog, dizziness, derealization, or feeling mentally different due to folate deficiency, low iron, vitamin D deficiency, ?
  2. If you had similar symptoms, how long did it take for you to notice an improvement after starting treatment? Did your symptoms gradually improve or disappear quite suddenly?
  3. What other blood tests would you recommend checking?
  4. Has anyone experienced air hunger or the sensation of needing to take deep breaths alongside these deficiencies?
  5. For those who received IV iron or folate, how many infusions did you need before noticing an improvement? How long did it take?
  6. Did anyone find that oral supplements eventually worked, even after not noticing any improvement during the first few weeks?
  7. Has anyone experienced worsening brain fog and dizziness after consuming caffeine or alcohol? Did this improve once the underlying problem was treated?
  8. Is there anything else I should investigate, especially considering that my symptoms started quite suddenly and have persisted for months?
  9. How can i recovery from this? because it's been few months at this moment.

I'm also wondering whether IV doses or the number of infusions should be adjusted, but I don't want to assume that more is necessarily better. I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences and what helped you, ideally alongside advice on what to discuss with a doctor.

I'm feeling pretty lost at this point. I just want to feel mentally normal again and wake up feeling rested instead of exhausted every day.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their experience.Folate, Iron & Vitamin D Deficiencies, Severe Brain Fog, Dizziness & Fatigue Has Anyone Recovered From This?

Magnesium Bisglycinate causing anxiety

Damn, just want to warn people here, I bought magnesium Bisglycinate last week since I read good stuff about it, however I am a person that has been having anxiety issues now and then and since I have been taking this form of magnesium before sleep my anxiety went up like crazy, first days after taking I didn’t realize it was from the mag until I stopped taking it.

Perhaps I help someone with my honest experience

Magnesium 400 mg acts like a laxative

I guess this means it's too strong?

The brand I use is the Nature Made brand.

I took Magnesium Oxide 400 mg every day to help with heart palpitations as directed by my cardiologist.

Eventually I didn't need it anymore when I took a break from it since it was causing me to use the bathroom a lot. (I think other defiencies was the real culprit because I later introduced different supplements and then my heart palp fully went away)

I want to resume Magnesium but I guess I was worried 250 mg might be too strong.

I had tried Magnesium Glycinate in the past, but that was for taking it as a sleep aid.

I have considered taking Magnesium Oxide every other day but I don't know if I will still get enough benefits from it.

Anyone have a similar experience with Magnesium Oxide?

Magnesium and period cycle

So I started taking 300mg of magnesium glycinate three weeks ago. I’ve been sleeping better through the night and less anxiety. I noticed my period this month was very light brown spotting for four days, then disappeared. This is very unusual for me. I always bleed a full five days. I read about how it can delay my period, I stopped taking the mag for one night and didn’t sleep at all! Did this happen to anyone and did you keep taking the mag? Did your cycle eventually get back to normal or did you have to stop mag?

Mysterious symptoms, curious about solutions

Heya, I had a blood test that indicated my vitamin D was at 14 ng/ml. My magnesium was in the middle range. My b12 was in the healthy range but still slightly lower. My bilirubin was high and same with glucose.

I've been having severe symptoms of brain fog, random bouts of nausea, dry eyes (which I have a cyclosporine prescription for now), struggling to focus, and a feeling of pulsating blood through my head when sitting down. It may be worth noting that this started near around when I briefly used topical minodixiol (only for 2 weeks), but I'm not so sure about if that caused all this. This feels like it might be a blood pressure issue.

I was wondering if anyone else had any similar symptoms and if it went away? Or if these symptoms may be something else which they solved.

Has anyone started taking magnesium in the morning instead of night

Due to it keeping you up? How was the outcome? I'm a distance runner so I know I need magnesium. If I take it in the evening, it wires me up. So I want to start taking it in the morning .

Digestion issues: too much magnesium or different type?

Hello,

I've been taking 300 mg of elemental magnesium (in the form of bisglycinate) for about 10 days, and it really helped me sleep! I take half in the morning with breakfast and half at night with dinner. I'm mainly taking it for stress and sleep.

However, I've been getting more and more nauseous, some other digestion issues and dizziness. I think this could be related to the magnesium. I stopped taking it yesterday because of this and it seems to be improving.

I wonder if this could mean it is too much magnesium? (300mg isn't that much I thought) Or could it be the type (bisglycinate)? It doesn't make me wired, like I've heard other people mentioning. I also have some citrate at home, but I thought that'd only cause more digestion issues.

Thanks!

Is 600mg elemental magnesium safe to take daily?

I take 200mg magnesium taurate in the A.M to help my palpitations/pvc's and at night I take NOW Magnesium which has 400mg elemental from oxide and citrate for my bowels. Is this amount safe to take or do I look for an alternative for my P.M dose?

Can you get your own INA or RBC magnesium test?

Quest and Labcorp (in the US) appear to only list serum testing. And getting it through my GP (if they can actually get it) is another copay visit which for me is $100.

LabCorp:

This test measures the level of magnesium in your blood, empowering you to make informed decisions on your nutrition and lifestyle choices for optimal health.

Quest:

This test can help determine the amount of magnesium you have in your blood. Low levels cause a magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesemia) and is more common than high levels (hypermagnesemia). Read more

Is there an adjustment phase for the chronically deficient?

I was an alcoholic for many years and never got much if any magnesium, and if I did, it was neutralized by caffeine or alcohol or whatever poison was in me. Acknowledging my deficiency my doctor got me on magnesium pills.

I tell you I'm in shock at how tired I am, but more so, how completely at peace and relaxed I am. I don't seem to be stressed (or whatever hell was my version of "stress" before). My whole body is soft, even my chronically tight calves and hamstrings from years of ten mile walks. My legs which I thought were damaged and weak seemed to soften and completely relax even while walking.

I'm astonished honestly at how different magnesium makes me feel and I realize I've gone without it for my whole life.

I was wondering if anyone has had any "adjustment" or "loading phases" where your body experiences some kind of shock or something in reaction to the new supplement. My entire body is soft, my mind is at peace, but I'm oh so tired, and my jaw is doing something odd. It's like I lived with a clench jaw forever, but it's slowly melting away, revealing some kind of constant pain. It's like the magnesium is revealing where my "normal" was chronically tight and softening it (causing dull pain and a stretched feeling).

My jaw by my chin to the smiley muscles are all kind of pumping, like there's new life in them, and they're trying to relax. It's like this constant noticeable flexion/tension, and my legs are like I'm walking on pillows.

Is this like a sign of extreme deficiency and the body going into some kind of shock after finally getting what it should have had for years?

Can’t sleep

I bought some magnesium after reading many take it to help them sleep. But after I got it I notice there are different kinds. Some are good for sleep
While others are good for constipation, which I sometimes suffer from but then I read it can cause diarrhea and I don’t want that. Which is best for sleep? This is the one I bought before I realized there were different kinds.
