Hey everyone!
I'm a software engineer interested in starting an ambitious indie game project, and I'm looking to assemble a team of developers, artists, and designers who might be interested in building it together.
The idea: What if learning algorithms actually made you stronger in an RPG?
I'm envisioning a high-quality, third-person fantasy action RPG inspired by games like Sword Art Online, Minecraft, and other dungeon-crawling RPGs, but with a unique twist: programming and algorithmic thinking are part of the world's magic system.
The game
Imagine exploring a fantasy world with villages, dungeons, dangerous regions, powerful bosses, rare materials, and unlockable magical abilities.
You fight monsters, gather resources, craft weapons, brew potions, learn spells, and progress through increasingly challenging areas.
But instead of unlocking everything through traditional XP grinding, some of your strongest abilities come from understanding programming concepts and algorithms.
For example:
- During combat: Short, floating code fragments or syntax interactions can enhance spells, trigger special abilities, or counter enemy attacks.
- While exploring: Small coding and logic challenges help activate mechanisms, unlock hidden rooms, or reveal secrets.
- When crafting equipment: Medium-length programming challenges allow players to forge more powerful weapons, armor, and potions.
- When learning spells: Players gradually master real algorithmic patterns like Two Pointers, Sliding Window, Hash Maps, BFS/DFS, and eventually Dynamic Programming.
- During boss fights: Players must recognize and apply techniques they've learned, combining their knowledge with actual combat skills.
The goal is NOT to interrupt the game constantly with a coding editor.
I want the programming elements to exist naturally inside the world, almost like magical runes or floating spell fragments. Quick interactions during gameplay, with longer challenges reserved for meaningful unlocks and upgrades.
Ideally, someone could spend hours enjoying the RPG while gradually improving their ability to recognize and understand algorithms.
World and progression
I'm considering a hub-based fantasy world with explorable regions, dungeons, and an optional tower/floor progression system inspired by SAO.
Different areas could introduce new concepts, materials, spells, and bosses. Previously learned patterns would remain useful throughout the game, with increasing complexity.
The art direction would be polished, stylized 3D, closer to Fortnite or a colorful fantasy RPG than realistic graphics.
Technical direction
I'm leaning toward:
- Unity 6 / C#
- Third-person 3D gameplay
- Desktop-first release
- Potential browser version later
- Modular gameplay, combat, crafting, and algorithm challenge systems
Nothing is set in stone yet, and I'd love input from people with game development experience.
Who I'm looking for
I'd ideally like to bring together 8–12 founding contributors, including around 4–5 programmers, before beginning serious development.
I'm particularly interested in:
- Unity/C# developers
- Gameplay and combat programmers
- 3D environment and character artists
- Animators and technical artists
- Game/level designers
- UI/UX designers
- Sound designers and composers
That said, the more the merrier! I'm not treating these numbers as a hard limit. If you're excited about the project and have something to contribute, I'd love to hear from you regardless of your experience level.
I can personally contribute software engineering, architecture, gameplay programming, and project organization. I'm not expecting other people to build the game for me.
Current status
This is still in the concept and recruitment phase. There's no playable prototype yet.
I want to get a group together first, discuss the design, establish a realistic scope, and figure out how to approach development as a team.
The first milestone would be a small but polished playable demo featuring third-person combat, a dungeon, an interactive algorithmic magic system, and a boss encounter.
This is currently an unpaid hobby collaboration, not a funded studio or paid job opportunity. Ownership, contribution rights, and any potential future commercialization would need to be agreed upon before development begins. I'm not promising future payment or revenue share.
I'm hoping to find people who want to collaborate on something interesting, grow their skills, build their portfolios, and potentially create a game that can grow into something much bigger.
Interested?
If this sounds interesting, comment or DM me!
I'd love to know:
- Your background and what you'd be interested in contributing
- Any previous game projects or portfolios
- Your experience with Unity or other game engines
- How much time you could realistically dedicate
I'd also love feedback from anyone who thinks this could be an interesting game, even if you're not looking to join.
Thanks for reading!
