Hint / Information Just a reminder if you have IBS C or chronic constipation

A lot of people who are diagnosed with IBS C or chronic constipation, especially if they aren’t responsive to diet and lifestyle changes, often end up having one or more significant motility disorders.

Many different things can cause these.

When you have chronic constipation, there is an order of operations you/your doc should follow.

  • first try dietary and lifestyle changes (ALL of them); if that doesn't work...
  • then try over-the-counter medications and supplements. If those don't work...
  • then you need motility testing done. Depending on your results of them...
  • then you go to prescription medication. Try them in different combinations and try all of them. If those fail, as well...
  • depending on your diagnosis after your motility testing, you may be eligible for non-invasive and invasive treatments to treat it. If those don't work…
  • again, depending on your diagnosis, then surgery is an option

If you are seeing a gastroenterologist and this isn’t laid out for you, chances their specialty isn’t motility. Unfortunately, many people get sent to GIs who have a speciality in something other than what they need. For motility, you need to see a motility specialist or a neurogastroenterologist.

There is a PSA I wrote and it is stickied above. I’ve been living with this since I was born (over 40 years). I also have worked in this area, as well. I try to spread awareness and this is often falling off of the radar and patients are just told to eat fibre.

With motility disorders, fibre is often the menace.

Testing for motility includes, but is not limited to:

  • esophageal manometry
  • antroduodenal manometry
  • gastric emptying study
  • 72 hour emptying study
  • upper gi series barium swallow
  • there was a wireless motility capsule but it’s been discontinued. There are a couple new ones in trials. Don’t hold your breath.
  • sitz marker test (also called a shape study)
  • colonic manometry (very key test but hard to get)
  • anorectal manometry
  • defecogram (mri or xray)

If you have any questions on testing, treatment, where to go, and so on, let me know.

Edit: because this post is now archived, please feel to send me a chat about any of the into here.

Question IBS and tattoo

• Upvotes

Hi all, I’m looking for some tips or just guidance on how to manage this.

I’ve dealt with IBS for over three years and within that time have had three tattoo appointments where my ibs has been completely manageable and I’ve not once been anxious or had any thoughts that it may be a problem whilst getting tattooed.

Recently my IBS has became much worse and I’m experiencing odd symptoms such as whining/rumbling sound from my bum ( I’m not passing any gas or feel the need to) it’s just the noise.

I feel extremely anxious over this as I’d be sitting for over an hour and I’m genuinely thinking about cancelling the appt over fear it’s going to happen.

Has anyone experienced this or got any tips on what some safe foods could be over the next coming days to hopefully prepare for it to not happen?

Question IBS?

Hello everyone,

I recently got told by a gp I have IBS after spending the last 3 months on the toilet and struggling to leave the house. I had a colonoscopy due to a positive fit test which was clear and no biopsies taken, I then got a reffered to gaestronology due to my symptoms not improving after following low fodmap etc. I have had 2 calprotectin tests, one came back at 90 and then the most recent one a few weeks later came back at 988! The gp then gave me an urgent refferal to gaestronology, a few days later I got a letter from gaestronology saying due to my colonoscopy being clear, they think it's ibs and prescribed me colesevelam without even seeing me. Surely IBS doesn't make your fcp test come back at 988? I'm just very annoyed as I'm still not seeing any improvement, I'm unable to go to work, enjoy time with my family etc and now gaestronology won't even see me. What would you do? I want answers to why my fcp came back at 988!

Question What to say to gastro

• Upvotes

Hi friends!

I’m going to the gastro finally to figure out what the helll is going on.

I’ve been dealing with IBS-C on and off for years. I was hospitalized in 2020 with colitis. They did a colonoscopy etc and everything generally looked fine. The major outlier was very low ferritin.

Anyway. I’m dealing with this again and it seems to be aggravated by running! Whenever I try to work out it gets worse. I also feel better when I avoid gluten. My ferritin is pretty normal now though still low.

Any tips for advocating for yourself at the gastro, or anyone else dealing with something similar??

TYIA

Question IBS came back ?!

• Upvotes

Hi F, 33.

I had IBS for as long as I can remember but never got diagnosed. Severe cramping after eating certain foods, lots of gas and constipation. Then one day I went to an endometriosis specialist and had a surgery, I was told I had lesions attached to my bowels.

The next day it was pretty much gone. But it wasn’t the end of the tunnel, I had a relapse about 9 years ago, severe lactose intolerance. Then I reduced my coffee intake and it started improving and eventually disappeared. It was a relief and I thought here I am free.

But about a month ago I had a severe episode of diarrhea and stomach cramps. I thought for sure it was food poisoning. But it didn’t go away daily diarrhea, then stomach cramps and soreness all over. I didn’t think about IBS right away it was variable improving and then reappearing and I had no other symptoms. I eventually did a stool test and nothing. I went back to my NP and he said it could be IBS but I needed a colonoscopy and Gastrointestinal refferal to confirm so here I am around here it’s about 3/4 months.

I don’t know what to think .. I am nervous. Could it be back ? Could I have been misdiagnosed ? Could it be endometriosis again ?

Question Looking for advice

Hi all! I’ve had IBS-D for a long time, probably over 10 years now. For the past six months or so I would say my symptoms have gotten worse however where they used to be manageable. I think in part because I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress and emotional upheavals.

I’m working on improving that but in the mean time any suggestions or advice that you’d recommend to help me?

I’m starting to try to cut out fast food/junk food, I occasionally take Imodium but that is it as far as it goes medication or supplement wise.

Rant If you have 1BM a day is it still possible for your colon to get choked out with poop?

I cured my IBS D with Reta. Then after pooping only once a day and feeling not empty, I went to drink milk and popped 13 times! It means 12 poop worth was still inside.

I mean if I didn’t clear it via drinking then won’t it be choked out?

🎉 Success Story 🎉 Accidentally “Cured” my IBS-C

I’ve been obsessed with Trader Joe’s European style yogurt, but ever since I moved to an area where the closest TJ’s is 2 hours away, I’ve been looking for a decent substitute. Someone on another subreddit recommended Stonyfield Organic Probiotic Whole Yogurt so I gave it a go. Turns out it’s similar in texture to the TJ’s Euro yogurt, though less sour, but I was mostly happy with the substitute. I had about a 1/2 cup with/after dinner for three days, and y’all… I’ve never pooped three days in a row before in my LIFE. Correlation doesn’t prove causation I know, but the one day I didn’t use the bathroom was the only in the week that I had skipped having yogurt the night before. I mean??? Something is adding up, right?

Anyway, I was just so excited to not be bloated and full of dookie for once. Crossing my fingers this lasts a while, but I figured I’d share in case this helps any of my fellow IBS-C havers.

Rant does anyone else feel hopeless?

Hello! I’m 20F and I’ve been struggling with IBS-D since I was around 13. Started off as anxiety then progressed into it. Over the last year for no apparent reason it’s developed into something worse. Bathroom trips 6+ times a day etc.

Now that it’s getting worse I’m starting to feel extremely depressed and hopeless, I’m terrified to eat food because no matter what I eat it genuinely goes straight through me very painfully. Even thinking about eating gives me anxiety. Not only that I’ve had to quit my job and I can barely leave the house due to being ill on the toilet.

I don’t see many posts with people my age and wanted to see if anyone else felt the same. It gets to a point where I don’t know how to live with this condition. Does anyone else feel extremely depressed?

Question Did I just ruin my colonoscopy prep?!

what the title says, I’m new to this area of my life unfortunately, I’ve been suffering with IBS and Gerd for the better part of a year and a half - We’ll it’s finally time for me to get this all checked out and I have my colonoscopy on Wednesday morning at 11 AM. Now here comes the question if anyone can answer it as the office is closed so I’m going to call first thing in the morning. I have two very small children and I’m beyond stressed. Given the circumstances of having young kids, I just now finally got a chance to look at my prep paper this morning and in big bold letters it says no ibuprofen for a week before the procedure. And no corn among many other things listed. The Gasp I GUSPED while reading those lines. Mind you, I was eating small bites of my son’s corn as I was reading it. The last time I took ibuprofen was last night around 7 PM 600 mg to be exact. I’ve also taken it a couple of times this past week due to period cramps. Unbeknownst to my silly self, that is on the top of the list of medication’s not to take for a week before due to bleeding risk. So Has anyone here made this mess up before? Does this automatically mean that my procedure will be canceled Wednesday morning? Am I possibly in the clear? help ya girl out! ty!!

Question I’ve got ibsD, fat malabsorption and Gerd. (Had endoscopy and colonoscopy. )

I eat low fodmap, low soluble fiber, no insoluble fibre, low fat.
Now dropping a few more foods due to gerd.
No more peppermint tea, green tea, or decaf. No carbonated drinks.
Citrus is gone too.
Going for a social meal was always tricky . But I’d still go for a coffee.
Feel like I can go for a warm water and bowl of white rice, not much left. Even lean protein is giving me problems atm.
A lot of the medication I’ve trialled for Gerd ramps up the ibsD. Same with the bile sequestrant for fat malabsorption.

Is there anyone here that has advice living with this trio?
(I asked in the Gerd group but mods removed it and said I should come here. )

Question IBS-M

I need help.

I’ve been experiencing random episodes of extremely painful diaherra with hours of abdominal cramps since 2022, and I’m trying to figure out if this is even IBS, which is originally what a health care professional told me.

Symptoms:
-Intense stomach contractions/cramps lasting 10–30 seconds at a time.
-Pain comes in waves, temporarily disappears, then returns, usually getting progressively worse.
-Pain starts high up (under my breasts/ribs) and gradually moves down through my abdomen.
-Episodes can last for hours until I finally have diarrhea.
-Once I have diarrhea, the pain and other symptoms usually disappear almost instantly. (i might have several different passings during an episode, if so then the symptoms only get better with the last one)
-During episodes, I feel EXTREMELY cold, even under multiple blankets/layers. I also feel nauseous.
-Between episodes, I struggle with constipation (infrequent, hard stools and incomplete bowel movements).

History of some of my recorded episodes and what I ate:

July 9, 2022: Chicken - pain ~3 hours later.
Sept 29, 2024: Shawarma - pain ~4 hours later.
Oct 6, 2024: Eggs, beef, spicy rice cake - pain while eating.
April 8, 2025: Chicken + alcohol - pain ~2 hours after eating, during drinking.
Aug 8, 2026: Burger + alcohol (left a concert) - pain ~3 hours after eating, while drinking.
Aug 26, 2026: Burger + 3 beers (left a concert) - pain ~20 minutes after eating, while drinking.
Oct 13, 2026: Wisdom teeth removal -> Thanksgiving meal (chicken, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, tzatziki, pumpkin pie, whipped cream) plus Wendy’s Frosty and fries. Was also taking amoxicillin. Pain started around 11:30 PM while going to sleep.
Oct 26, 2026: Sauerkraut the previous evening. Breakfast: tortilla, eggs, bacon, cheese, Miracle Whip, coffee with cream and sugar. Lunch: turkey and cheese sandwich. Afternoon: iced coffee with caramel and oat milk, oatmeal raisin cookie. Pain started at 6:30 PM.

Has anyone experienced something similar during episodes who also has IBS, particularly the intense worsening cramps (sometimes associated with a gurgle near the end of the episode), constantly being cold, and immediate relief after diarrhea?

What should I do. Please help me.

Meme / Humor the cure to my ibs-c is anxiety attacks

usually i’m as backed up as the files of a paranoid programmer, but i’ve found the miracle cure for my chronic constipation — anxiety attacks! for my job as a researcher, i have to interview strangers a lot, which is unfortunate because i have severe social anxiety. however, the mounting panic i feel in the hours before every interview spurs my guts to finally move! if, like me, no laxative in the world has been strong enough to free your tum, maybe try putting yourself in a prolonged terrifying situation about once a week.

Question Is this really ibs

Hey guys I've been told I have ibs since I was 17. It started with stomach pain and constipation but I've noticed over the last 4-5 years stomach pain that stops me in my tracks.

It will feel like a charlie horse in my stomach. I usually literally dont move and barely breathe until the pain goes away. Now that I've had a hysterectomy i feel it in my stomach to my pubic bone.

Ive seen a g.i. doctor and had an endoscopy, colonoscopy and my hysterectomy pictures were fine.

The last time I brought this up my doctor offered a low dose antidepressant like amytripaline(sp?) I had that in the pas for I.C. and the withdrawals felt like nerve pain everywhere so I'd rather not take it. Plus I'm 36. I don't want to be on antidepressants forever.

Has anyone felt these pains before and if so what helped or what was your diagnosis?

Question How to reduce the problem of long, hard poops

Well, I have at least reduced (hopefully) days of where I have to go to the bathroom over and over. That's a good thing. I have struggled with straining and sometimes have hard, hard stools that can be long. I drink plenty of liquids, I take motility agents, I consume some fiber, consume some extra virgin olive oil to increase internal lubrication, but still get these long, hard stools. I prefer it to many loose ones, but I would like to improve the situation as it can aggravate my internal hemorrhoids. Anyway, find a way to reduce the issue or know the cause?

Question Scopolamine helped my ibs?

I’ve had IBS for most of my life. Mostly IBS-D that would lead to noxious gas that would sometimes last all night. Long story short, I did chemo for 5 months this year (unrelated to my bad stomach) and oh my goodness, my stomach was so so bad. I tried everything to help it. 3 weeks ago I had a 9 hour surgery. Since then, my stomach has been better than it’s been in probably 12 years. Pooping twice a day, very little gas, etc. The only thing I can think of that could have changed my stomach in this way is the scopolamine patch they gave me. I did have a few bad side effects from it like blurry vision, a transient fever, blown pupil, urine retention, and hallucinations, but I would go through all that again if it’s what has helped my stomach. Not sure if scopolamine could impact the gut in that way, but any similar experiences?

Question Frequent noisy stomach growls - anyone else?

I was wondering if someone has the exact same issue that I have.

I typically have the full works of IBS-D problems (loose stools, stomach cramps, mucus in stools, etc).

But there is one issue in particular that I find very humiliating. I have the most noisy gut, and it always seems to spring up in the worst situations! For example being sat in a quiet room, work meetings, cinema, etc. It always attracts so much attention towards me, and I often can't stop it.

The most common noise tends to be lower down in my gut (towards my rear end), and is likely caused by gas bubbles. I'm not always able to pass gas when this happens, so it might be trapped gas. Basically imagine the sound of passing gas, but it's trapped inside so you just get this loud internal rumbling sound. I also get noises higher up in my gut, but these aren't quite so frequent.

Sometimes the lower gut noises are accompanied by mild to moderate stomach cramps. Occasionally I feel like my gut is under attack or is severely irritated. Other times I just get the noises and not much else.

Stress always makes this issue worse. I'm autistic and possibly undiagnosed ADHD. I also have a lot of anxiety issues, and have a fast metabolism (I'm always getting hungry and getting a rumbly stomach, but that is a separate issue).

Doctor suggested following the low FODMAP diet, which I try to stick to. This reduces the frequency of the issues, but they still are far too frequent to not have a big impact on my life.

I often fear for my future, so many times I have had to leave situations because of this embarrassing issue.

Rant Gas incontinence is ruining my life

The problem started last year, when I got a night-shift job. During that period, I started having a lot of gas. At the same time, the gas incontinence began. I have gas every day, constantly. I feel as though I have gas about to come out 24 hours a day, every day. I also feel as though something isn't right back there. I think feels slightly chafed, but without any pain. After a few months, I left the job and started looking for solutions. I went to doctors and hospitals, and I went to the gastroenterologist several times. I tried different medications, including Omeprazole and Aturen, and a cream, but nothing worked. I also paid quite a lot of money for a set of medical tests, which included blood and urine tests. When I went back to the gastroenterologist with the results, he barely looked at them for about 30 seconds and told me everything was fine. And he sent me to get more tests and referred me to a proctologist. I decided to go to the proctologist, and he told me I had a small hemorrhoid and recommended a cream, which didn't work either. After spending quite a lot of money on appointments, tests, and prescriptions without getting any results, I stopped going to gastroenterologists and proctologists.

My case seems to be a little different from others I've read about. I've read accounts from people who don't realize when they pass gas, but in my case, I can feel when one is about to come out. The problem is that I can't hold it in. I don't feel pain, nor do I feel discomfort when sitting. The only thing I managed to improve was the problem with blood on the toilet paper. I started being much more careful when wiping myself and taking sitz baths from time to time, and it's been almost a year since I last saw blood on the toilet paper. However, the gas incontinence continues...

I tried Kegel exercises and eating healthily, but nothing has really worked. I still have a lot of gas every day. Since I developed this problem, I haven't worked again, and I spend almost all my time cooped up at home, alone and without socializing.

It's something very embarrassing and limiting. I want to work, go out, socialize, and live like any other person, but this problem prevents me from doing everything, to the point that I even stopped taking buses. I've also noticed that the symptoms get much worse when I'm in public. I'm depressed and tired. I no longer know what else to try. I'm tired of living like this, this isn't a life.

Question Don’t know what to do?

I usually take mago7 for overnight constipation management but I started feeling like it was to aggressive so I started miralax last night. I had a good morning bm but I feel more bloated and constipated than before. Should I give miralax a go for a few more days or go back to mago7? Kinda scared things will worsen if MiraLAX doesn’t work out. Advice please!🙏

Question IBS worst on days off?

Does your IBS get worst on days of rest?

My IBS has vastly improved in the past years. No, I cannot eat what I want, I need to careful schedule and plan my meals, but I can function on a daily basis and be well on most days.

Now, what I have noticed in the past weeks/months, is that my work days go alright, my days off go alright if I have activities planned, but when I get to a full day off, a battery reset day where I just stay at home, relax and chill, everything that was.... staying in storage... letting me function... Suddenly wants to get out in multiple trips with cramps, pain, nausea, urgency, all the lovely symptoms.

It's like if stress is keeping things at bay but relaxation opens the gates of hell.
