[Mod Post] Community Ideas?

Dallas foodies,

I was recently out at Reddit HQ and they might approve funds to support our growing community of foodies but we need a solid plan to pitch them. Here are a few ideas I've had, would love for y'all to pitch in ideas too:

  1. Food Tour of x Dallas area - Like bar hopping but going to various restaurants to try certain dishes. Apparently the Chicago Food sub did something similar with support from Reddit.

  2. Local restaurant support - Find a locally owned restaurant that could use some love, rent it out for several hours, have members of the sub come and eat, post pics of the food here and on other socials to spread the word.

  3. A billboard that encourages other Redditors to join our sub.

Allow myself to introduce ... myself

Hey everybody, I'm Sarah Blaskovich, restaurant critic for The Dallas Morning News. I'm a born-and-raised North Texan and I've spent most of my journalism career writing news stories about restaurants. I'm new to the critic role.

These days, nearly everyone’s a critic online, so I questioned whether we needed one more voice. But after 14 years at The News, I've stepped into the critic role. My hope is to share friendly tips, clear opinions and exclusive restaurant news about Dallas-Fort Worth.

First up:

What do you want from your local restaurant critic?

What kinds of restaurants are important to you?

We're on the same team. I'd love your ideas. You can reach me anytime at [sblaskovich@dallasnews.com](mailto:sblaskovich@dallasnews.com) or on Instagram.

New Mexican food in DFW?

Hey guys, New Mexican transplant here! I’m looking for any New Mexican eateries in the DFW area; I’m talking green chile (Anaheim chile) based; chile rellenos, enchiladas, all the good stuff. Emphasis on NEW Mexican rather than traditional Mexican food.

Bonus points if it’s close to Denton!

First time in Dallas for the marathon, with two little kids. What should we do?

Hi everyone! My family and I are visiting Dallas for the first time for marathon weekend, and I'll be running the full. We'll be staying downtown and have Friday and Saturday free to explore.

We have a couple of kids under 5, so I'm looking for kid-friendly must-see spots and things to do that fit into two days.

We'd also love restaurant recommendations, big or small. We especially love hidden gems, small local spots, and food trucks.

Thanks so much for any tips!

Spicy

I need the spiciest food recs in town

thai, indian, wings, mexican, anything to make me feel something in the face.

and not the usual places -- daves hot chicken "reaper" or anything "thai spicy" -- I have an insane tolerance and extra chili oil doesn't do it.

I want to be regretting the decision for days to come.

Building a list of Dallas spots that serve food after 2 AM. Tell me your go-to that isn’t a chain

I’ve been building a list of Dallas spots that actually serve food late. I checked each place’s own site, ordering page or store locator, because Google’s hours are often wrong for the kitchen.

After 2 AM on a Saturday, I count about 200 places still serving. But 166 of them are chains, which leaves only 41 independents. I don’t believe it’s really that few.

The ones I have are mostly taco spots and pizza windows: Fuel City, Cesar’s, El Tacaso, the Taqueria Taxcos, Italia Express on Cedar Springs, Old Hag’s, GAPCO, Prince St., DanSungSa in Koreatown, Big Guy’s Chicken and Rice.

Where do you eat after 2 that isn’t a drive-thru? Taco trucks, gas station kitchens, Koreatown, anything. I’ll check the hours and add them to the list - https://latenightfoodspots.com/dallas

Dallas Drink Specials

Have a friend coming in on Thursday November 12th. I will pick her up from Love Field and we are staying the night in Dallas. Looking for recommendations on some good drink specials for a Thursday night. I usually go to Boomerjacks bcuz they have $4 tall beers on Thursday but was looking to mix it up a little. Extra points if there are any good tex mex restaurants with good drink specials. Thanks!

Anniversary Dinner and Tasting Menus

Hi, I'm trying to book a dinner for our ninth anniversary and am looking for recent reviews of tasting menus and nicer dinner experiences. A few questions:

  1. Does Quarter Acre update its menu regularly?
  2. Do you know of any places that offer nine courses, or that would add a course or two for us? I'm happy to pay extra.
  3. Have there been any recent menu updates or great experiences? We've been to most of the well-known places, with the notable exceptions of The Mansion, The Charles, and Tatsu.

What’s the most underrated restaurant in DFW that more people should know about?

Trying to expand my horizons beyond the usual suspects. Hidden gems only, no chains. What's your pick and what should I order there?

Shug’s bagels hot sauce dupe

Shug’s hot sauce is the perfect hot sauce. Like, I can go through a bottle in a week. But I live about 45 mins away from the closest Shug’s and going on the weekends is always a mad house.

Any recs for a good store-bought hot sauce that’s similar to their house made hot sauce?

I forgot the official names. Brat taco, Asian brisket, carne asada

Carne asada I get every time. The Asian brisket is a limited time, and the brat was new since I'd last been. All very good as usual. I was pretty stuffed after 3. They seemed a little more filled, but could just be who was on the line today.

Punk Noir Closes In Dallas After Just Four Months

Thumbnail dmagazine.com

From D Magazine: "Early headlines and press coverage focused on the price of Punk Noir’s most expensive offerings, including a $295 tasting menu. The blog DiningOut Dallas put the number $1,000 in its headline, calculated from the most expensive possible food and beverage choices. As a result, many diners never tried more modestly priced options, like the $10 cocktail I had last week."
