News Groundbreaking Web Serial 'Worm' Is Becoming a Comic Book

• Upvotes

“After enduring a brutal and bloody bullying scandal, Taylor finally has the power to fight back: With her newly triggered ability to control insects, she could prove everyone wrong and become a hero… or kill anyone who stands in her way.”

“In a world of superpowered gang members, fanatical cults, and ruthless serial killers, Taylor must navigate the dangerous politics and unwritten rules of the local ‘cape’ scene, where the line between hero and villain is anything but clear. For Taylor, perhaps, least of all. Will she risk everything to save others, or use her power to exact revenge on those who’ve wronged her?”

Added IDW executive editor Heather Antos, “Worm is such a fresh and compelling take on the superhero genre, challenging what it means to be a hero or a villain, and whether right and wrong are always so black and white when you’re fighting for what you believe is good. Getting to collaborate with series creator John McCrae to bring this incredible world to comics with IDW is an absolute thrill, and it’s especially exciting that this project came to IDW through series editor and IDW associate editor Cassandra Jones, whose own personal connection to the story first introduced us to it, and the team has already done an excellent job bringing the characters to the comics page.”

if you've never heard of this series, do keep an eye out! it's a very interesting take on superheroes as a genre and definitely worth giving a look

What's that one run that destroyed a character or almost did?

So there are some runs that destroy a character to a point they don't use them or have to put that character on ice for a time. To you all what has been that run that ended a character's time

Discussion Arcs You Don't Like In Runs You Enjoy?

I've been bingeing the Delano Hellblazer and really enjoying it. He has a great knack for horror and atmosphere, and while some of the social commentary is lost on me being a Canadian Zoomer, the stuff that hits on topics like the Thatcher government and religious fundamentalism hit really hard. First two volumes were sublime.

Then with The Fear Machine, I hit a wall. I typically love high concept, cerebral books: Morrison is one of my favourite writers, and I really like what little I've read of Hickman as well. I had grown accustomed to and appreciative of Delano's verbosity, but this was just too much. It feels like 3 issues nothing happens but buildup, and attempts to show the scope of the conspiracy just ended up making the characters and plotthreads jumbled and confusing. The fact it goes on for like 9 issues and ends rather unsatisfyingly soured me on it even more. It also lacks a lot of overt horror. The early issues didn't make me wet my pants or anything, but there are a lot of scary implications and visuals in stories like the one with the man who kidnaps John's niece and the whole of the Newcastle Incident. As soon as I got to The Family Man, I breathed a sigh of relief, and immediately fell back on the wagon.

I've experienced this a lot less in Western comics than I have Manga. Recently I started reading Hunter x Hunter and I was getting really bored with the Heaven's Arena arc due to my fave characters Kurapika and Leorio being shafter in favour of the less interesting Gon and Killua, but the arc that follows was superb. Likewise, as much as I love Diamond is Unbreakable, some of the arcs like Rock Paper Scissors Boy and Cheap Trick feel forgettable.

I know a lot of people think this way about Claremont's early New Mutants, and yeah it isn't nearly as fantastic as Demon Bear or Legion, but I found Nova Roma really enjoyable for how absurd the premise is, and also the entire character of Selene in general.

What are your cases of runs you love with that one stretch of issues you just can't down with?

Wow what an interesting story yet the artwork!!! Wow I love the different style of this 6 part story! Solomon Grundy for example was beautifully done!! I LOVED the style of this story. Is there anymore comics in this style of art?? I read Hellspawn the complete collection though I'm not a Spawn fan just because it's the same vein. Never thought I'd see a story about DC 10 Eyed Man I'd like either.

Suggestions marvel comics for a teen girl beginner? (sorry for the yappy post)

Recently, I got into DC comics because I grew up watching DCAMU, teen titans, the live action movies, the batboys, og animated batman, young justice, etc. it was also mostly for MYGOAT Damian Wayne because I really, really liked him and his character even as a kid. I wanted to read marvel comics as well but I was worried I'd get spoiled for the upcoming mcu movies, but someone told me that there was a rare chance I would be and that secret wars & doomsday was very loosely taken from the comics or something, and that there's always big changes from the comics to the MCU films.

Anyway, I'm still a beginner at reading dc (I've read only 4-6 comics at the moment), but I kinda wanted to read marvel too, so what comics should I read that are good for teens and **won't be spoilers for doomsday or secret wars somehow?** a lot of people say to just read whatever interests me, and that's totally fine, but I'm also a little stumped. I don't know too much about the comics aside from stuff here and there, and I'm also paranoid of finding the **adult, very gory or 18+ ones** 💔 I felt like I would probs find less interest in marvel ones, so **anything engaging/entertaining** will do! It doesn't have to be anything too childish tbh js something good!

for clarification:

\- the only kind of comics I've actually read are manga (black and white, Japanese) and manhwa (basically manga, but coloured and Korean)

\- I'm a teenager myself hence why I added that little note at the end but I also have a mild tolerance for anything gory, mostly because I like horror even though I'm easily scared lol

\- I was told to just select a team or a character and read their comics, still not sure if I should do that though. If it matters, I was already thinking of Moon Girl and the Devil Dinosaur, etc. I also have a strange liking for any comics with a teen girl or boy main character.

\- I can't really handle any of the following themes: sa, r\*pe, and anything disgusting and detailed.

some comics I'm already interested in but don't know much about:

\- The Uncanny X-Men (I don't really like when it's too dated though)

\- Astonishing X-Men

\- Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

\- Young Avengers 2005

\- Runaways

\- Ultimate Spider-Man (it's very long tho)

\- Ms. Marvel

\- Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

\- Strange Academy

\- Gwenpool

\- The Inhumans, by writer Paul Jenkins and artist Jae Lee

\- Spider-Man (2016-2018)

DC comics I read and liked (basically everything I've already read which is very little, **you can skip this**):

\- Superman Smashes the Klan: it was wonderful. I felt very connected to this one as a desi-african. Loved the art style, characters, character design, story, the brother-sister relationship, occasional humour, Henderson, Lois, Mr. White, JIMMY, the rest of the main cast, and just the themes in general. Some parts (like the first appearance of the Klan) were unsettling in a way that felt engaging, and the casual racism even by people who thought they were being nice genuinely felt so infuriating. I really don't remember any flaws. I loved it.

\- Batgirl The Darkest Reflection: i quite liked it. It was a good intro to Barbara Gordon even though I already know the basics of her character, but this comic made her more likable to me.

\- Batman and Son: I also kinda liked this! It was also a good intro to damian even though he annoyed me at the beginning which was very, very expected. The random nked panels startled me though 😭

\- Tomasi's Batman and Robin: "forgive me, father, for I have sinned." "I did what I had to do to help you protect our castle. Our kingdom." I LOVE YOU DAMIAN OMYGOSH. Nearly cried reading this. loved the way his character was written in this and how Tomasi dealt with it. their father-son dynamic made me feel so happy, and alfred and titus were obviously highlights. Definitely my fave alongside Superman Smashes the Klan.

\- Morrison's Batman and Robin 2009: actually surprisingly really liked the doll concept, because as much as I hate dolls and find them mortifying, that's why I found this so creepy, so I guess that's a pretty good thing! I also really loved the richard-damian dynamic in this one, the dialogue for the two, how damian actually did care about/protected some of the victims even though that's in character ("stay with me" and "he better hope so" talking about the villain when dick suggested that the victim might've escaped, etc), and alfred's appearances. The only thing is that it was getting a bit weird and I found myself uncomfortable with some of the scenes (for ex, the scene when they were literally strxpped?? or that one old lady that wanted to see batman nked... and I was a bit nervous during some gory scenes but nothing I couldn't handle probs. the weirder stuff js felt off to me). As much as I liked this one, I think I liked Tomasi's one better. ("I was expecting scary, not gay." - robin. LOL) other fave quotes: "tell the girl we're even" "I ran" "and scarlet was gone"

some characters or teams I'm interested in delving into/back into (anyone unmentioned who you think I'd like please feel free to let me know!):

\- Spider-Man (this was heavily obvious)

\- Moon Knight (still mad that there was no season 2)

\- Loki

\- Miles Morales (def one of my fave spidermen of all time just from the animated films)

\- X-Men

\- the Sentry

\- Yelena Belova

\- Nightcrawler

\- Black Cat (surprisingly, even though I know very little about her)

\- Deadpool (mayhaps)

\- Kate Bishop

\- Vision

\- this is very dumb to say but ANYONE LIKE DAMIAN WAYNE HONESTLY, even if they're niche. He's my favourite characters oat, his character arc is wonderful, and I'm incredibly biased towards him and I say that with no shame.

You can also recommend any characters or teams you think I'd be interested in. I'm really into anti heroes, teen heroes, found family or strong friendships, etc. my favourite genres are thriller, mystery, horror, fantasy, romance (I don't read much wlw or mlm tho), etc. so basically almost anything. I just don't like anything inappropriate.

I mostly just miss characters like the batboys/the robins and young heroes in general, honestly, but I'm open with any other recs as long as it's fun or engaging or whatever! thanks in advance :)

Question What should I read from Garth Ennis

Garth Ennis is one of those creators I always hear come up in comic conversations and I heard he's good and people like him but my only knowledge of him is that I have read some of his punisher stuff and I liked it. But then I have also read his cross and the boys comics and I thought they were okay they were graphic but they had their moments of comedy and I believe I understood a lot of the undertone he was trying to tell with those stories about if heroes were real or humanity if people had no filter and stuff like that. But I also thought that they were kind of just edgy for the sake of being edgy and I'm just wondering if that's pretty much what is stuff is like.

Now I know of two other of his works them being preacher and hellblazer which I've always been meaning to read those comics because I'm a fan of Constantine from the TV show and the animated DC movies. I've also started watching preacher finally and I've been enjoying.

But that's all I've known and read so I'm just wondering if people could recommend me any other stuff he did that I can find on the DC and Marvel apps or anything really good that he did outside of those two companies

Excerpt Which comic book fights really work on the page? I looked through 45 years, year by year, to find 25 of the best

Most lists of the “best comic fights” are really just lists of the most important fights. They focus on really big stakes or famous characters, and covers you’ve seen a hundred times.

But I wanted something different, fights that are great because of how they work as comics. The point is you can follow every moment from panel to panel, the page turn hits like a punch, and the layout leaves you wrung out.

I’ve been reading comics since the early ’80s so I went through 45 years of Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, and Valiant and picked the 25 fights that do it best. This is NOT a ranked list, I think most ranked lists are crap because it's too subjective. I go in chronological order. For example:

Daredevil Vol. 3 #25 (Waid & Samnee, 2013): Matt fights Ikari, who also has radar sense, so Matt loses his main advantage. In an empty sporting goods store Samnee stretches a single reaching movement across three narrow panels as a broken sprinkler rains down, so a split second turns into an agonizing pause. Only comics can create that kind of suspense.

And a few very different ones from the list:

  • Wolverine #4: Miller slows the duel down and lets you watch Logan calculate distance
  • G.I. Joe #21: a whole castle infiltration with no dialogue, captions, or sound effects
  • Thor #380: every exchange gets its own splash page, so each page turn feels like it costs Thor something
  • Usagi Yojimbo #60: the bow before the duel is drawn with as much care as the duel itself
  • Orphan and the Five Beasts #4: The fight takes up almost the whole issue, with very little dialogue, and each page turn raises the stakes with new attacks, new forms, etc.

One famous fight I left out: Batman vs. Superman in DKR #4. The mud-pit rematch with the Mutant Leader in #2 beat it, and I explain why in my write-up.

Part 1 (1980–1993): https://sagaofthejasonite.com/best-fights-in-comics-part-1/
Part 2 (2000–now, plus honorable mentions): https://sagaofthejasonite.com/best-fights-in-comics-part-2/

It's really meant to be a resource for people looking for great fights, where the quality of the comic is good too.

Suggestions Single-panel cartoons or strips similar to Edward Steed?

Edward Steed is the author of single-panel collections like "Forces of Nature" and "Happy hour".

He draws for "The New Yorker" and his comics are not always politically correct, sometimes cruel or creepy

Looking for something similar in type of humour, not necessary in drawing style
