NEED INPUT (Performer Help) I finally got my toss (kind of)

Ok so I know this is bad because i just learned it but I have been excluded from performances for a while because I cant do a 45, I taught it to my mom who used to do colorgaurd so she could teach it to me! It actually worked! Before I couldnt even let go of the flag and now i can kind of do it. Tips are welcome! (Featuring Harold the helmet my team mascot)

Edit: I know that this is an unweighted five, my coach told me to start on a five, and its taped badly. Its my mom's old one from when she was in high-school because its all I had at the time. Im also aware I made no attempt to catch it, I learn tosses by throwing and not catching so I can get used to how it moves, where it goes, and getting my release/power right before catching. This works best for me. :)

NEED INPUT (Performer Help) 45 help

I've been doing guard for 2 years, and I just cannot get the hang of 45s. Really any kind, even basic singles. I completely understand the mechanics of the toss, the main issue is that I'm TERRIFIED. I feel like I'm going to hit myself in the head. I'm really good at flag, and this is like the one thing holding me back. Any tips, or ways to get into 45s with less fear?

COMMUNITY QUESTION Solo Competitions for people out of college/high school. No age limit?

Hi everyone! So I am out of high school and college years ago and not affiliated with any program. I still spin from time to time. I mainly do it for fun but I also have planned to solo competitions. I was going to do a MA independent solo in Corpus Christi, as that was local.

MA has a class for 19 and older (Colligiate) no age limit

I know WGI no longer has virtual. Just found out recently

Are there any other guard solo competitions that allow people or have a division i could compete in?

I dont live near an independent guard program and but I do want to do more solo competitions if there any near Corpus Christi or even anywhere statewide. I know MA Dance and Auxiliaries does, I heard that NBTA does, too, but I don't know the logistics/requirements of entering. I just don't want to enter, pay my fee and be turned away.

COMMUNITY QUESTION Trying to find old uniform design

Post image
3 Upvotes

We found this uniforms in our storage and are looking for their copies/what company might have made them. I likely date them around 2015-2017 in terms of when we used or bought them but they could be older. They‘re gold, red, black, have a tan translucent section and have attached jazz pants. If I have to get these made custom, please let me know what company would be best. Thank you!

NEED INPUT (Instructor Help) What is the cultural "statute of limitations" on re-using music from a more famous group?

I coach a small town SRA guard that only attends one WGI regional a year and a few other local circuit competitions. As an example, if I did a 60s show with a medley of songs, one or two of which were used in the Pride of Cincinnati 2010 show "Summer of Love", is 16 years long enough to be able to use one of those songs again, or would the poor SRA group be doomed to be compared to an IW classic?

COMMUNITY QUESTION Guard Opportunities in Central Jersey

Hi all! I have one season of winterguard experience (relatively novice) and am looking to join a group in central New Jersey, near New Brunswick. Does anyone know of any guards nearby, especially senior guards/guards that accept those over 22 at my experience level? (I’m currently 22, so am open to other guards as well!)

GENERAL "Retired" colorguard dreams.

So I haven't marched in a few decades now. But I was wondering if any other guard alumni have those anxiety dreams about colorguard? Instead of forgetting to study for the test or realizing I should be in school anymore, I dream of guard.
Sometimes, it's the day of the show and I don't know the routine because I never went to practice. Others, I'm my 40s year old self and they're throwing me out on the floor because they need a stand in. I try to explain I'm too old now, but they either don't believe me or say it's fine!
Anyone else have those dreams?

COMMUNITY QUESTION I want to do colorguard again

I really miss it, but I am 25. I know most guards have age limits, and even if they didnt I havent spun in 7 years and dont think I could make it onto a team. Is there anything I could do outside of practicing at home?

COMMUNITY QUESTION Counting saber blade tosses

I'm trying to work on my blade tosses and I'm a little confused on counting the rotations. Do you count when the hilt is down, or is it something else? Is catching the hilt up a full rotation?

COMMUNITY QUESTION Is anyone else getting bored of their guard?

This is really dumb but I’m a senior in hs, and I’ve been doing it since I was a freshman. My guard was self-taught by a coach and is now self-taught and student led since she retired. I’ve been appointed as a captain so I usually lead practices. It’s a bit boring to have to reteach basics every year, then make the routines, then clean the routines. I don’t really practice anymore bc I’m busy coaching them but the routines are catered to the newbies so it’s also just below my skill level. I don’t even need to practice. I didn’t really even realize until yesterday, when one of my other seniors friends wanted to lead the practice and I realized I was bored out of my mind being it on the other end. Like, I know what I’m doing. I don‘t need to be here but everyone else does. (Even the other seniors, I’m constantly fixing what they’re doing and they’re fixing each other and when I ask to be critiqued they don’t have anything) I want to learn new skills and be with people who are at the same level. Does anyone else feel that?

COMMUNITY QUESTION Concerned Parent? How Should I respond?

I’m a younger color guard coach and got an email from a dad whose daughter just joined this year. He’s concerned about the bruises and marks she’s coming home with from practice and wants to know if this is normal.

It’s a fair question.

I want to take his concerns seriously without making his daughter nervous about something she’s been really excited about. I’m planning to check in with her and take a closer look at where she’s having trouble, but I’m still figuring out how to word my response beyond “it happens sometimes.”

More experienced coaches, how have you handled these conversations? What do you explain to parents, and how do you make sure your members aren’t brushing off injuries?
