Are these indefinitely free to download or just for like... A day you can snag them?

Now for the million dollar questions: which hold up well? Which still have live communities?

Ascend still has a fairly decent community. The others... not so much.

One of them needs a ps2 emu to run it.

What's the CD key for Tribes 2 for? Do I put it in somewhere or is it for the installation?

Tribes: Ascend, the last on the list, is getting heavily re-balanced. You can check everything at r/Tribes.

Other than ascend, which of these games has the largest playerbase?

Nice. It even has Earthsiege and Starsiege. I wonder if I could convince them to put Cyberstorm up there.

If it's how they handle it with Smite, then the Steam version is completely identical right down to the launcher, with the difference being you don't need to be running Steam to be running the downloaded-from-website launcher.
