I was browsing this sub yesterday and saw a post regarding AMA's. I am only a little guy on the show, but happy to answer any questions.
I have a couple of days of travelling through airports, so Hit me reddit

What does Alycia Debnam-Carey smell like?
Kidding.
Can you describe how Mt. Weather was created? A lot of it looks like it was filmed in some kind of real military facility, but I'm sure some of it was sets. However it was done, they did a great job making it feel like you guys were really inside a mountain.

All of Mt Weather is all in a studio, it's an amazing set, in between scenes I would just wander around looking at art

Holy Shit this is amazing! Congratulations on not dying in the finale! Do you think there's redemption for Emerson? The show is so good at making us hate someone one week and love them the next and Emerson seems like such a great character to do that with.

Absolutely. As I mentioned in another reply, I would love to see Emerson exposed, and explore why he did what he did.There is a great quote -
'It is the evil that lies in ourselves that is ever least tolerant of the evil that lies in others.'
Clark did a seemingly evil thing in the finale. The evil that emerson sees in her is simply being reflected back at him.....I think thats pretty damn interesting

Well I am actually Australian to so it just reminds me of home :)
Henry Cusick is hilarious and makes it very very hard to get through a heavy scene.
ALIE is a very interesting storyline. I am stoked to see where it goes. The girl that plays her actually played my wife on another show called Motive last year, so hopefully Emerson and ALIE have a showdown ;)

I love the amount of secret Australians on The 100, wow! Clarke, Bellamy, Anya, Lexa, and now Emmerson. It's so rad.
Makes me wonder what's happening in Australia while the events of the show are going on. I'd like to say we'd have it pretty sorted, it's not like it could get that much crazier :)

So I suppose this is more of a personal question. I can't stand watching myself on film. Do you feel the same way watching yourself of camera or do you refuse to watch episodes because you're overly critical of yourself?

good question, I have never watched myself and been 100% happy. But I do watch all my work, I want to get better, and sometimes what feels right in the moment doesn't translate to the screen, and you have to figure out why.

PS Also I really liked Emerson! The man's just doing his job didn't seem to take pleasure in it either. Looking forward to seeing more of him!

Do you think, with both Clarke and Emerson apparently wandering the woods now, if there will be another little showdown between them? Cause you just gotta bet Emerson is itching to get at Clarke after she, you know, killed everyone he knew and loved.

I would like to think it will be a BIG showdown. Emerson lost everyone he loved. Everything that defined him. You gotta be afraid of a man with nothing to lose.....

Now i'm imagining what might happen if they do cross paths.
Clarke and Emerson's plot in the episodes:
Ep 1 Emerson see's Clarke hunting. With so much hatred in his heart he sprints towards her and tackles her to the ground knocking a rifle she was holding away from them. While he's on top he grabs her by the neck and lifts her off the ground. When she kicks him while off the ground he hurls her against a tree and screams at her with all the rage and pain he feels. She grabs a knife on his belt and stabs his side. They both fall to the ground but he still has a hold on her throat she tries to stab him again but he knocks knife out of her hand. While on the ground as Clarkes head becomes more red from pressure she desperately searches around her arm reach and grabs a fist sized rock and smashes it against his head and he falls to her side unconscious. She gets up and starts walking away but feels overwhelmed with guilt and decides to help Emerson. After bandaging his stab wound she grabs her rifle and leaves. When he wakes up he see's she helped him but is gone.
Ep 2:
Eventually they cross paths again and he tries again. This time knocking her to the ground and pulling the rifle from her. He takes several steps back while aiming at her and just stands there staring at her in the rifles cross hairs. While looking up at him she carefully stands. They both just stand and stare. Emerson with hatred and grief. Clarke with despair and guilt. After a couple seconds of silence she begins talking about how sorry she is and that she can't even look at her people without thinking of what she's done then says he should kill her. 3 seconds later he shoots and the sound startles Clarke making her close her eyes. The camera zooms out showing he shot a tree right behind her. After more silence he rests the rifle to his side and begins walking in the opposite direction of her. Clarke calls out asking him why he didn't kill her, after she see's he's ignoring her she begins yelling and screaming at him begging that he kills her with tears in her eyes. He turns around after a few more screams says that it would be too easy for her and that she deserves to feel the pain.
Ep 3
During this episode it shows Emerson spot Clarke from a distance but he just walks the other way. In a later scene he hears a sudden loud roar and turns around realizing it came from Clarkes direction. The audience knows this roar as the giant gorilla that lives in a worn down zoo but Emerson has no clue what it was. He looks back the way he was heading but instead chooses to go to the roar. The next scene shows him arriving at the zoo. While very quietly investigation he see's a knocked out Clarke on the ground bleeding from her leg. The gorilla reaches out begins pulling Clark towards it. Right when its about to bite her leg, probably right off, Emerson decides to open fire. Killing the beast with aimed shots to the head. He then again looks back to the direction he was headed but instead chooses to help Clarke. The final scene of the episode is at Camp Jaha in the morning. (During all of these scenes more is going on with the other characters at Camp Jaha) While 2 of the Arker characters are walking along the inside of the gate they see Clarke by herself laying on the ground unconscious. (This would be the first time Clarke had returned to Jaha since last season.) Then the episode ends.
That would be my perfect idea of a beginning of a plotline for Emerson.

THIS IS SO COOL i wish i had something to ask you!!! Actually I do, not sure if youre allowed to answer this but will your character actually be in season 3 since youre the only one that survived from the mountain? Also can you tell us when season 3 airs? Because I think there was about 4 months between 1 and 2 so it it the same for 2 and 3?

I havn't had anything confirmed nor denied as to whether I will be back. I would LOVE to be and would jump at the opportunity. I forsee a shirtless showdown with Lincoln. BRB gonna hit the gym for 5 years.

Working with Jonny Whitworth (Cage) is great, he is so passionate to find the truth of a scene or a character, which I love. So him.

Not at all, I would have loved to work with Bob, and I am sure we could have made a killer scene. I am however very happy that Emerson lived to fight another day, and am excited to see what season three holds

OK I can't believe I almost missed you. I have like a dream of Clarke and Emerson teaming up in the jungle after all they both did horrible things for their people so it's like a freaking match made in heaven. Don't really have a question but could you just maybe give a high five for me to your sets make up artists like the effects made by them is simply amazing. Really hope to see you in s3 and maybe you'll get that showdown with Bell. Cheers

I will give them a high ten hows that. They do such a good job, When I got radiation burns in ep 11 I had a long time in the makeup chair getting ready, and got to hand out with the makeup and hair crew for a long time, lovely lovely people

So......long story short i used to work in the ski industry as a sales manager and we had a big conference in Vegas. To celebrate us signing a very big pro skier (Glen Plake if you know him) to our team the whole company had a party at the house of blues and the pussy cat dolls performed for us. I had had 1 or 2 whiskeys (read 17) and was dancing up a STORM. I was invited to jump on stage. So there I was, dancing with the pussy cat dolls, in vegas, having the time of my life and a though occurred to me. I should absolutely do a backflip off the stage. So I did.
Two fractured heels and a trip straight back to a Sydney hospital 18 hours flying away

man that was powerful. You knew right then and there that the Arkers could kill him before he would say anything to put the mountain in danger. Really, even though you just repeated the same line, your facial expressions and just the way you said it...damn man, that was great stuff.
I am looking forward to seeing more of you in season 3! heres to hoping.

How often does the cast hang out not on set? From some of the BTS stuff posted it looks like you guys are pretty close, and I've always wondered how much actors interact in real life

Yeah a fair bit, all the main cast are pretty tight. Some live in LA and fly up for each ep, but for the most part there is a lot of fraternizing (is that a word?)

I loved working with Eliza and Alycia briefly. Lovely girls but also super passionate about making the best scene they can. I got a chance to hang out with bob a fair bit over the last couple of months and he's just a good dude.
While I didn't work with Ricky, I hung out a bit of set with the guy and if you look up charasmatic in the dictionary theres probably a picture of him

As for my question, if we were living in the world of The 100, which faction do you see yourself most likely to belong in. Arker, Mountain Men, or Grounder?

I think you will definitely be asked to come back for season 3 because you are the only surviving MM and possibly be in the main cast. Also because you and Clark are both alone, I think you and her will join up.
Do you think you could get any other characters to do an AMA? It would be really cool to start a weekly AMA with a cast member from the show.

How do you like Squamish & Vancouver? I'm from the Fraser Valley and I love hearing outsider perspectives. It must be difficult to film in the cool conditions, although we did have a very mild winter. Love your acting, thanks for answering questions!

I love Squam and Van. I am actually looking at buying a place in squamish. Shooting here can be trying because of the weather, but the results on screen are undeniable. Yeah this mild winter was rough, i havn't even picked up my season pass from whistler and it's march!

If Emerson is back next season, how do you think it will be done?
I was thinking he'd possibly run into the 'alone' Clarke somewhere in the woods.
I'd also love if he was on a revenge mission type thing, started creating bombs and putting traps around Camp Jaha and even possibly in the camp itself to create some chaos.

I think it would be all about survival to emerson, so whatever it takes. Remember, he has no friends, no family, no home now. Whats more dangerous than a man with nothing to lose

I'm guessing they would have been in different locations, but did you ever get to see the mutated horse from season 1? That thing is amazing!
You mentioned that you auditioned for a couple of roles before securing the role of Emerson - can you tell us which ones? Would you have preferred to play a different character, or did you discover that the roles you'd gone for were people who got killed off and have a moment of smugness?
What kind of impression did you get of the whole setup when you first started filming - anything in particular that really stood out and made you go 'wow'?

I didn't see the horse my guess is they CGI'd a normal horse.
As far as the roles I went for they are usually pretty secretive about what the role is and name the character something random for the sake of the audition, but i have a suspicion one of them was Gustus, played by Aleks Paunovic. He K-I-L-L-E-D that role. I am glad I had to go for a couple before Emerson, I feel this character and want to develop him a lot more
The set of Mt Weather blew me away, all the art, the history of the human race, contrasted with Dr Tsing's lab.

I would start with Emerson lost in the wilds, turned primal, a man with nothing to lose. Clarke I feel is the other side of the same coin, a woman lost with demons to fight, them coming together would be super interesting
the city of light, ALIE, the lighthouse are super intriguing and I am excited to see what the writing staff do with that

Can you tell us how long it takes to usually do a scene? The one with you and Clarke at Camp Jaha was so wonderful, and I wondered how long it took to get that made.
Oh gosh this is a thrill! Thank you SO much for coming here, we are totally obsessed with the show. Your character was the one that tipped it over for the winners in our Fantasy Army contest.

Ha yeah I saw that, always bet on Emerson is the lesson from that :)
there are a lot of variables with regard to how long a scene will take, but that particular scene took a lot time, lots of characters and lot of extras, plus it's such an important scene they wanted to make sure they got it right. I think we probably spend two days at 12 hours a day on it. Plus a week of prep before we even got there

I'm glad Emerson survived (not just because of the points I got in the finale fantasy army bit), because he's probably the best person that illustrates the similarities between the structure of Mount Weather and the Ark, when it was still up in space.
Which would you rather happen: your character running into Clarke on her walkabout, hanging out with Murphy in the apocalypse version of MTV's Cribs, or getting involved with nuke-happy ALIE?

What about Lexa? She seems to have the same qualities as Clarke when it comes to leadership, but maybe a bit more harsh. I think they're both great leaders but Clarke is more impressive given she's had less experience at it.

He was outside the Control room putting explosives in place to blow the door when Clarke and Bellamy Irradiated level 5, and he heard the alarms going off and knew what had happened, it shows him on the control room camera he just kinda shakes his head and runs off. I imagine he knew he would die if he blew the door, (even if he did take someone out with him, it was 3v1) and that everyone he ever knew or loved was dying on level 5 and he just wanted to live.

My question for you is how weird was it to act like your skin was melting off? For some reason every time it happened all I could think was damn these actors are amazing!!

Yeah those moments are always wierd, everyone does a good job or making it real though. The real tough part of that is usually those scenes have to be ADR'd. This means that the sound when the scene was shot wasn't very good for various reasons (train went past, to windy, someone in the crew coughed ect) so we have to re-dub the sound at a later date. So that means you find your self in a room with headphones on looking at video of your skin melting, and you have to scream into a microphone to match the video. Audio dubbing a sex scene is even weirder.

Yes! Sex scenes are another thing I always wonder about! Man that has to be awkward. I have one more question. When you got paper thrown at your face, was that scripted or did Johnny just do it for dramatic affect? I think we all really enjoyed that! (No offense)

HA! none taken. It wasn't scripted, just came up with it on the day, we tried to build in a little tension between emerson and cage and that little moment helped

I was thrilled, it was a LOT of fun to film. Dean white was the director, who is exec producer. Jason was there at the monitors all the time. There was a sense we were making something pretty cool and setting it up for an amazing season 3

So what kind of shenanigans go down on set? Any jokers among the cast/ crew?
Also does the fake blood come in actual barrels? The show seems to get through a bathtub full most episodes!

We actually have a couple of trucks of blood delivered every morning.
Jokers - Henry Cusick and Ricky take the cake. When you are shooting 16 hours in a row in the rainy mountains it pays to have them around

I would love to see a more human side to Emerson. It was never shown or written but I would like to think that he had a wife, and maybe kids. Family that are now dead and the hand of Clarke. Not trite at all !

Now that Emerson and Clarke are out on their own are you hoping for any sort of showdown between them? I imagine it's possible they could run into each other.
In any case The 100 has amazing character development so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to the last mountain man.

We had a day where me Ricky, Alycia, Eliza and Katie were filming WELLLLLLL into the night. The scene where Eliza storms Mt Weather with the grounder army. We were all working on zero sleep and had been up for more than 24 hours.....then the giggles started....then Ricky 'stole' a transport car. And we started rapping. good times

Could you tell us how early is the script revealed to the actors? Do the writers tell you the general direction the season is going to take right away? Like did you know that the story line would lead to everyone in the mountain dying and the kids from the 100 having their bone marrow removed?

I can only speak to what I know, I am sure the leads get a little more info with regard to where the overreaching story is headed....
I know....pretty much zero until I get the scripts usually 1 week before shooting. I actually love that, because I find out whats going on at the same rate as the viewers.

Absolutely. The right choice is not always the easy choice. Or the popular one. And i think a good leader knows that. I would like to think that Emerson understands that and sees the big picture.

You said in another post than you did not knew how many episodes you would be in, and I don't really know how TV series contract work when you are not in the main cast.
I guess that the contract engaged you to be in the season for as long as the writers wanted? And since you don't know if they will use you for a lot of episodes or not, you cannot really sign with any other job?
Also, how long before season 2 were you cast as Emerson?

Pretty much yeah, last season it was an episode by episode basis. For me I can work on other stuff (and I have been lots of very cool stuff coming out in the next couple of months, I even get to yell at john travolta) but only if it doesn't conflict with The 100.
My first episode was ep nine, and I got the gig 3 days before filming ;)

A series can give you a longer arc to work with and lets you spend more time in the character which is nice. The pace of tv vs film is the big difference usually. On a film (most of the time) you get more time to really nail the scene which is great, although the hustle of always running the clock on tv keeps you on your toes. Ultimately I love them both, although I love the stage the most probably, the connectiveness with the audience

I was a ski racer as a kid, so skiing is my second passion. I also compete in powerlifting, so I lift heavy things and put them down again.
Travel is a huge part of my life, i have a plan to ride a motorbike with a side car for my dog from alaska for south america next year :)

Do you think Emerson will remain a villain in S3? I'm thinking he may be a good way to introduce new groups in S3, if the arkers meet another group and he is there.
OR maybe Clarke meets him on her travels and they have to work together for some reason (or fight to the death)?

What was your reaction when you discovered Emerson wasn't going to be killed off?
What was your favoite scene filming?
Finally, what would you like to see happen to Emerson next season?
Personally i think you're character has a ton of potential and it would be very pointless to kill him off. He was the last man standing after a genocide on a season finale. You can't just kill someone like that off!

Thanks, many of the questions I have answered above, but for those I havn't : I hope Jason gives Emerson some redemption, no one believes they are evil, everyone thinks they are doing good, perspective is everything.
favourite scene to film was when Alycia cut my hand ties in front of Elyza, it just said so much about all three characters.
When I found out I wasn't going to die, I was stoked! The longer I stay the better!

Not really. Initially I thought I was only going to be around for one maybe two episodes, in which case I would have given myself a lot more to do. But as it turns out I stuck around for a lot longer, and the next season could potentially be very interesting, so the slow boil is better ;). I always felt like there was an underlying tension between emerson and cage that I would have liked to explore, we played a bit with my questioning him at times, but there wasn't really any room to play that story out any more

Well so I'm really late to the game but HOLY COW thanks for doing this! Characters you love to hate are absolutely some of my favorites and I'm really glad Emerson isn't dead! I can't believe it's seven months (probably) until season three.
So, if you could change one thing that's happened on the show in either season (if anything), what would it be and why? I can't even answer this question myself because I binge watched both seasons in less than a week and I think the writing is phenomenal.

I have a bunch of stuff that I just finished shooting that is about to be released. Wayward pines is a very exciting new show that premieres in a couple of months, and I have a nice guest star arc on that. Also keep an eye out for 'Impastor' on TV land.
I am currently writing a one man play that I would love to get off the ground by the end of the year about a solo astronaut that is on a mission when a comet hits the earth, leaving him alone in space as the last of humanity

The writer of the show said you were meant to die but they didn't have time to put it in. How does that work exactly? Were you given the script and shooting schedule, then told, "Actually, today you get to not die"?
It just seems like such a big decision to kill off characters, so I'm surprised it's almost accidental that you'll be in the next season considering what massive implications that could have on the story line, especially with regards to Clarke.
Are these unpredictable decisions a regular thing when creating a tv show?

For the more minor characters for sure. The story will always remain the most important aspect, but there are a lot of logistical factors that mean things have to be flexible. I am just lucky that I got a stay of execution long enough carve out more of a character :)

ha thanks, yeah I have heard quite a lot of that in the past couple of weeks.In real life I have only sucked the marrow out of one kid, and he was a real jerk.
I have no idea what the future holds for Emerson, I believe I was supposed to die several times in Season 2.
What would I like to see? I would like an opportunity to flesh him out as a character. What this show is so good at is exploring why some people do such heinous things. There is no black and whites, just various shades of grey. I would LOVE an opportunity to do that with Emerson.
Plus I wanna go all navy seal in the forest. Maybe meet Bear Grylls

Real question: were you given any info (or did you make anything up yourself) about Emerson's backstory? Like did he have a family in the mountain before Clarke killed them all? Were he and Cage besties in high school? (Does MW even have high school? which of them was prom king?)

HAHA. yes I really am. Mt weather sperm are super strong too...so the gestation period is only like 3 months.
Emerson originally started very small. Infact I only expected to be on for one episode, press some buttons, tell cage some info and then disapear. So the more episodes I worked on the more I wanted to create a backstory. There is nothing written, but I would love to think he had a family. Why else would you do all these terrible things. Pure evil characters are not interesting. But good people motivated to do bad things are .

I totally agree, so fingers crossed he makes it out there on his own and we get to learn more about him next season! I think that'd be fun.
And true, Cage's got the hair and the suits, and his dad and Emerson to help him stuff the ballot box. I bet he'd give a terrible victory speech though and it'd only be a matter of time until he threw the crown at someone for not fully appreciating his dance moves.
